Yesterday, I returned to Malvern Collegiate Institute (MCI) as an alumna. This year, MCI is 120…read moreyears young. There was an open house for alumni at the school. I checked it out. Part of me had reservations. I didn't want to meet peers whom I didn't exactly hang out with in high school. Luckily, none of that happened. Instead, it was nice to meet up with friends from my graduating class and peers from my decade. One friend had the same feelings as I did and shared them with me in front of one of the gyms. We've known each other since grade 7 and explains a lot about our friendship. MCI is in the Beaches. These days, the area is called the Upper Beaches. Either way, you're not far away from Lake Ontario. I will get the essentials out of the way if you are reading my review to determine whether your child or you as a prospective high school student want to attend MCI. If you're a regular reader, you get a glimpse of my high school years. MCI has a decent language department. English, French, German, Latin, and Spanish classes are all available. French comes in core, extended, and immersion varieties. I formally took English and French. I was interested in Cantonese and ended up taking courses across the city at a few schools to compensate. After grade 8, I dropped out of extended French and had a guidance counsellor adjust my grade 9 schedule to suit my French level going into the core program. I ended up skipping grade 9 and went into the enriched French stream. The good news was that I took every core course available and didn't have French in my final year. The downside was that I had a lot of conflicts taking French exams with my other courses and had to deal with that extra hassle rescheduling exams. The school is known for its marching band. The music program is incredible and attracted me here. I had played viola before coming to MCI, so I had to swap it out. I played clarinet all through high school. I chose the trombone as my secondary instrument in my final year. There are three different bands. You progress as your music competence strengthens. There's junior, intermediate, and concert bands. The latter ends up being the marching band for the Santa Claus Parade in Toronto and the Easter Parade in the Beaches. There are also smaller music groups, such as the jazz band. The choir wasn't what I had hoped for in grade 9. However, I loved it when I rejoined in my final year. It also has a jazz choir, which is smaller and more intimate. The science department is strong here. I was an average science student. You'd think that my being great in math would be the case in science. Nope. I totally defied the odds. I took two chemistry classes and had the most supportive teachers. They appreciated my effort and knew that chemistry wasn't my strong suit. My grade 11 chemistry teacher was there at the open house, which was nice. I loved math. I took every course available. Most of my teachers were men, except for my finite math teacher who hailed from Scotland. I was geeky. I ended up in the enriched math path and loved it. I also enjoyed history and geography. It was tough ditching one of them because I couldn't fit everything into my schedule. I took history all through high school and loved it. I had to ditch geography after grade 10. World history and geography were great classes. I never took US history, which explains why I don't get its electoral system. I also ditched gym after grade 10. MCI has a decent pool, two gyms, a soccer field, and tennis courts. Well, I saw a portable classroom take up part of the tennis courts, which was weird. I loved swimming, floor hockey, basketball, and badminton back then. Computer science was my homeroom in grade 11. I took a single course. I ended up majoring in the field in undergrad. I saw the transition of having more computer rooms yesterday where there used to be keyboarding rooms. Learning how to type was relaxing and useful. It was also an easy course to do well in. I never took art classes, but they thrive. Same goes for shop classes. I also didn't do any business classes, such as accounting. I didn't do drama classes. High school had enough drama... lol I found out that MCI has an archives room. It was news to me! I found a capsule from our grade 10 history class. I am friends with its owner. It was cool and kind of sad that we're older... haha! I wonder what he put in his. The library is a semicircle room on the main floor. I spent spare classes there, catching up on school work or doing research. The room under it is the cafeteria. I always had a bagged lunch or would have hot food in a thermos. I never bought anything at the cafeteria. My best friend did and lived to tell about how mediocre it was. It was great strolling down the halls again. I think we were all in great shape as teens because there were so many staircases! I'm fortunate that I had a decent high school experience that returning was not traumatizing, but enjoyable. (144)
