My sweet grandson was born here and they were wonderful! What a great hospital. The nurses were attentive and kind and so inclusive of all the family members. The rooms were gorgeous with plenty of chairs and seating for family members and they were really as hands off as they could be with my son and his girlfriend and them having their baby. The cafeteria, while expensive, was really great. Hot foods, sandwiches, cold drinks, fruit, breakfast food. They had everything. There is also lots of food places very close if you don't want to eat there. Parking is plentiful, we always found a spot right near the hospital (and this place is big). I am extremely disappointed with the care I received in the Emergency Department at St. Dominic Hospital. I was sent directly to the emergency room by a clinic after being told I had a corneal abrasion, a suspected corneal ulcer, and a swollen eye. The clinic was concerned enough about my condition to send me to the emergency department for further evaluation. Upon arrival, I had to wait over three hours before I was taken to the back but then placed on a gurney in the hallway and told that I would be treated there because my condition was not considered an emergency. I was especially displeased to be the only patient treated in a high-traffic hallway where people continuously passed by, stared, and went on with their day, which made me feel exposed and uncomfortable during an already painful and stressful situation. All other patients were placed in rooms while I was awaiting treatment in the hall. They had the unmitigated gall to write in a marker a room number and taped it on the wall by my gurney with my wristband informauto. taped on the wall as well. I felt degraded and uncared for at the same time. I arrived around 5:00 p.m. and waited for hours without being examined by a physician or other provider. During that time, my symptoms became progressively worse. I repeatedly informed the nursing staff that I was experiencing severe eye pain, extreme sensitivity to light, increasing swelling, and worsening symptoms. Despite expressing my concerns and fear that my vision could be affected, no one came to reassess me or explain the plan for my care. After six hours, I still had no relief from my symptoms. Eventually, I was told that there was no ophthalmologist on call. While I understand that not every hospital has an eye specialist available at all times, I expected someone to examine my eye, explain the next steps, or discuss whether a consultation or transfer to another facility was necessary. Instead, I remained in the hallway feeling overlooked, frightened, and uncertain about whether my condition was being taken seriously. The most disappointing part of my experience was not simply the wait--it was the lack of communication, compassion, and follow-up. Being left in severe pain with worsening symptoms and no meaningful updates made me feel as though my concerns did not matter. Patients deserve to be treated with dignity, kept informed about their care, and reassessed when their condition changes. when the doctor did show up, she treated me, but gave me no insight for a referral. I hope St. Dominic Hospital reviews its emergency department processes, particularly regarding communication with patients, timely reassessment of worsening conditions, and ensuring that patients understand the plan for their care when specialty services are unavailable. No patient who is worried about losing their vision should feel forgotten while waiting for treatment. I rarely leave reviews, but after my mother's recent stay, I feel compelled to share our experience. From the beginning, there were serious concerns about her care. On May 5, she was in visible distress--crying and shaking from IV pain--yet her discomfort was not addressed with urgency. Instead of removing the painful IV when requested, a nurse proceeded to place another one while she was still in pain. The same nurse also rushed her through discharge paperwork without ensuring she understood what she was signing, which felt dismissive and inappropriate. Medication management was another major issue. At discharge, medications that had already been discontinued were still listed and even administered. The discharge paperwork contained inaccurate information, which could have led to serious harm if my mother hadn't caught it herself. This points to breakdowns in communication and patient safety protocols. When I asked to speak with a patient advocate, the situation was escalated unnecessarily instead of being handled appropriately. It did not seem like staff were prepared to respond to patient concerns in a supportive or informed way. What was especially troubling was overhearing staff refuse to assist another elderly patient who needed help using the bathroom, leaving them in an unacceptable condition. Witnessing that contributed to our growing concern about the level of care being provided. We also had issues with discharge planning. Despite ongoing symptoms, our request for an additional night of observation was denied. Prescriptions were sent to a pharmacy two hours away instead of the hospital pharmacy as requested, creating unnecessary stress at discharge. Basic care needs were difficult to meet throughout the stay. Assistance with bathing was delayed, and we often had to request cleaning for the bathroom. The environment did not feel consistently maintained, and the layout made it difficult for someone with mobility challenges to use safely. Case management support was also lacking. When we asked for help with medical equipment and supplies, we were told to coordinate everything ourselves. The response felt dismissive and did not reflect the level of support we expected during discharge planning. Overall, this experience resulted in a complete loss of confidence in the facility. My mother now feels unsafe returning due to concerns about communication, care quality, and patient safety. I hope this feedback leads to meaningful improvements, because no patient or family should have to go through an experience like this. read more

St. D's quality of care on the floor has noticeably declined since the facility changed ownership. There are two main scenarios: veteran nurses who have stayed primarily for retirement benefits, and newly graduated nurses who are struggling to keep up. Many of the experienced nurses rarely assist CNAs with tasks like moving patients in and out of bed, often leaving family members to step in and help instead. In contrast, the newer nurses are generally more willing to assist when needed. Response times to call buttons range from just a few minutes to over half an hour, with delays worsening at night due to the absence of unit secretaries. This is particularly unacceptable for patients who urgently need help, such as getting to and from the bedside commode. Calling for medication is problematic. When pain medication was requested for a patient with stage 4 cancer, there was a 25-minute wait before having to use the call button again. A nurse not assigned to the patient eventually responded, stating it was too soon for more medication, although the patient had not received any for over six hours. After clarification, the nurse realized she had mistakenly checked the wrong patient's file and later apologized, which was appreciated. This was a problem more than once. A recurring issue I have observed over the past eight days is that employees are frequently using their cell phones--either browsing online or talking to friends using earbuds--while on duty. This occurs even when patients' call lights are flashing, indicating they need assistance. The hospital's long-standing affiliated doctors continue to provide good to excellent care, and this remains the primary reason I would still recommend this hospital to others. read more

They did a great job treating me but since being discharged they have been a nightmare. My insurance has denied my visit because the hospital has not sent them my records after multiple requests and faxes. I even put in a request for my records and have heard nothing from them. Once this is resolved they will never see me again. I will go down the street to Baptist instead. read more

70 year old woman, hadn't eaten in weeks and 1st er visit they didn't admit her. Second er visit? They admitted her for two days and gave her potassium And saline, no nutrients and released her. Third er visit (all within a week) was to a different hospital by now she literally had not eaten or orally drank anything for well over 3 weeks. She coded in the er and was admitted. Discovered she had a uti which can kill an elderly person. She exhibited every symptom of a uti in the elderly but went unnoticed and untreated at st Dominic's. It's been over a week in the other hospital and she's still not recovered. At Dominic's staff were grossly negligent and dangerously uncaring. Enter st Dominic's at your own risk. read more

Had to spend a few days in this hospital and some of the days were ok and some of them were very bad days. They have the worst phlebotomist team to take lab work in the city for any hospital. They are very rude and have very bad bedside manner. Around 3:45 this morning I had one phlebotomist by the the name Timea Come in Rushing super fast because she was about to get off her shift Taking me super fast by cutting on unwanted lights inside my room where other phlebotomist that comes in turns on the necessary lights to do their job. She speedly Aggressively rubber band my arm To take my blood without a care in the world. When I asked her to slow down because she was waking me up out of my sleep, she ignored my request. By saying that "she had to do her job." Once she counted off to put the needle into my arm. She didn't give a Full count so that I could be prepared. She rushed the needle into my vein, drawing the blood. Once I asked her what time she got off she nastily said "6:30 am." Then I proceeded to tell her that I didn't want her back to draw blood again. She told me I was "one less person that she had to worry about." Unprofessional, impatient and aggressive with a nasty attitude. I had to get out of my bed with a catheter in my stomach to report her and her attitude to the nurse in charge for the night shift. Next time I have any health issues, I will heavily consider the other hospitals that are in the city instead of this one because of my experience. Very disheartening experience for the one hospital in the city of Jackson, Ms that I trusted with my health the most. People of that personality, attitude should not be working in the health care field dealing with people's health. I give this experience zero stars if I could. I called the ER to ask how long the wait might be for my well insured 90 year-old mother to see a doctor after a fall. We are waiting at University and after being told it could be up to eight hours. The woman at St. Dominic refused to try and give any estimated time or any range of times. I take that as an indication of poor quality in the way they treat people. It let me know to never even think of bringing anyone there ever again. I remember when St. D used to be a caring place. I suppose things change. read more

If you want to avoid having a C-section, you should not deliver at St. Dominic's which has the highest rate in the State followed by Delta Health - Northwest Regional in Clarksdale (50%) and Merit Health Woman's Hospital - Flowood where 47.2% of patients had a C-section delivery. In 2021, 1,530 women delivered at St, Dominic hospital of which 51.8% had a C-section delivery. In 2022, total deliveries dropped to 1,515 of which 48% had a C-section delivery. There are 7 hospitals in the Greater Jackson Area (Hinds, Madison, Rankin Counties). An average of 44% of patients who delivered in these facilities had a C-section in 2021. read more

This is a review about their ER. I have used it twice under the new owners. Once for a leg injury and once for a medical problem. The first time with two, what turned out to be, torn ligaments in my ankle from a fall and a smashed shin that was cut and bleeding (although did not need stitches but I had horrible damaged nerve pain), ankle was very swollen, they were a big fail. They wouldn't let me use a wheel chair so I had to hop (which hurt) to x-ray. Despite a swelling and purple ankle and shin, they said nothing was wrong, wouldn't give me an ace bandage, crutches or pain meds (didn't want opioids, rather something to deal with the nerve pain). Had to go elsewhere to get an actual diagnosis, crutches, and meds. The second time I had a medical issue. Because I was refusing tests I knew I didn't need (it was a chronic issue) one of the PA's/NP's (don't know which their training was) said in frustration that they had "mandate to have at least $1200 in billable charges for every patient who came through the door". That is insurance fraud. The doctor notes had a significant number of lies (for example that I felt so much better after an IV - umm didn't get one) so that she could charge for a high level of care (the hospital side charged for a low level). And she only saw me for 4 minutes and 35 seconds (yes I timed that), said the placement of the leads on the EKG were wrong and that is why the abnormal result but when I asked if it should be repeated she said no. Also while I was in the hall they put a patient with active covid within 3' of me. The staff were not wearing masks and they told me they didn't want to move me since I was wearing a mask and she was wearing a mask and so there was no risk to either of us (I am immunocompromised and I told them that). I finally forced them to move me. Despite my issue I was not monitored in any way, shape or form. No idea, other than fraud and lying on the doctor write up about a number of things that didn't happen, how they could have ever justified a high level of care. 100% hit rate on incompetent care and insurance fraud (had that issue on the first visit too). read more

I went in with my Mother for extreme abdominal pain at 10 AM CST, on 9/7/2023. We were told after tests were done that our Mother had a small bowel obstruction and would be admitted to the hospital. We were also told that environmental services would need to clear the hospital room before our Mother could be moved to one. After 9 hours of waiting in a room in the ED, environmental services still had not cleared the room. THIS IS UNEXCEPTABLE FOR AN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT!! I took a relative to the emergency room with stroke stage high blood pressure. Every hour or so they ran a test, but no one would tell us what they meant. We waited 10 plus hours to see an emergency room physician and we never were able to see one. When we asked if we would be seen, they told us we can't say and don't know. We left at 2 am and she saw her own physician the next day. We were blessed she did not have a stroke until she was properly treated. The staff did not care and numerous patients left without treatment. As we were leaving we were informed that we could see the test results online. It is beyond pathetic the callous attitudes and total lack of professionalism exhibited by this staff. We will never be back and I advise others to seek alternative facilities. They truly did not care that a person was told by EMTs to seek immediate medical care only yo sit unattended for over 10 hours. read more

First of all, I am writing this review in hopes it reaches a far greater audience than I could on my own. Also, I would like to add that Mental illness IS a true disease the same as Cardiovascular disease and Diabetes and should be treated as such. It is not to be placed on a shelf in a box marked "Crazy" to be ignored and even worse, not cared for. My experience with St. Dominic's hospital, specifically the MICU and the nurses/staff involved has truly opened my eyes to the injustice that mental illness patients receive. I was the patient. And because I was admitted with a less than desirable diagnosis, I was put in a room, marked with "Crazy" and was treated very poorly as such. The nurses ignored my calls. I was not checked in on to see if I was ok or needed anything. I have been here for 3 days now and I have yet been asked if I needed a linen change or assistance with bathing. I still have the dried vomit in my hair that I came in with. The nurses and staff treat me like I am less than. They have been very rude and hostile towards my husband. He's never gone through this and is scared and just looking for a kind word of encouragement. He nor I have received either. The big burly, gruff psychiatrist that came thru late at night after I had been there for hours questioned me about what was going on and bc I was frustrated at that point and didn't say what he wanted to hear, jumped up and ran out of the room stating, "Not having to talk to you has made my life easier. I don't have time for this #!*%" All the while, nothing is being explained to us about what's going on. We were told one thing but then nobody ever came back to explain anything. When I became very upset about how we were being treated, one kind nurse shouted "you're not getting the care you need because we are short staffed". WTH? Did somebody just say that?? To a patient? Out loud? Let me tell you something. I have been a nurse for 25 years. Bedside, hard running, on the floor nursing. ICU being the majority of my experience. I NEVER treated my patients like they were an inconvenience because of being short staffed. And they surely were never told that. Nursing has come a long was since I graduated in 1998. Back then, nurses cared. They had true compassion. And the patients healed healthily. This batch of nurses today are just shells of there better, more compassionate hardworking counterparts. Shame on you, St Dominic's Hospital, for not having nurses and mental health staff capable and caring enough to know mental health is a different kind of Illness and should be treated as such. I am a human being just as all of you. I am intelligent. I am smart and my mind doesn't handicap me in anyway. It's needs a more tender treatment. Rest assured, me and the ones I love will never stepped foot back into such a heartless, non compassionate hospital that was once the best of the Jackson area. read more

If something is life-threatening, there is no other hospital in Jackson I would trust. Without going into detail, I will just say the doctors and staff here have literally saved the lives of 2 of my immediate family members. The ICU department is top-notch. The nurses in the unit are amazing. The waiting area for surgery is great. I was impressed with how they kept us informed of everything that was going on while we waited. Sometimes the wait in the ER can be excruciatingly long and other times there is little or no wait. Every staff member I have come into contact with in the ER has been wonderful - the doctors, nurses, x-ray techs, phelbotomists, et al ... Great... Just great! All so warm, caring, and friendly. ERq visit. Severe pain in abdomen/back area. When i went to triage , 2 nurses were there and one man. The man started asking me questions that he should have had access to the answers that are in st Dominic profile system.. he kept asking me questions of everything in the system yet he was typing in my data in his laptop! It was frustrating when a patient is in this much pain. I asked the nurses, isn't my information in there? They both said yes, we have everything here. I was in so much pain I asked him who he was, he said the provider. I asked do you mean a doctor ? No. Do you mean an outside 3rd party? Yes. I asked can i just please move on, i can not sit here and answer questions that dont pertain to my illness, all these frivolous questions. He worked for UMC! Now that is sneaky and deceiving of St Dominic to allow this! If patients wanted to go to UMC, I would have but I didnt and I don't appreciate wasting my precious time answering his questions to put in his laptop probably for some kind of grant project! Pts in pain should not have to go thru a 3rd party, then to triage That is ridiculous! Probably some grant research healthcare study UMC is using thru private partnerships! Triage with the two nurses went fine after that 3rd party guy left. Finally my doctor looked at the CT scan, which looked like infection in kidneys and RXd med antibiotic.. . They asked me to get urine and being that I am left handed and all the tube's, etc were in my left hand so just imagine how hard that was to not sit on a nasty toilet toilet, tube's hanging against the inside of toilet, was very difficult to hold urine cup in right-hand. The bathroom was worse than a gas station, not clean, urine on the floor in which I stepped in.... unacceptable esp for a Catholic hospital! This question of the left or right hand should always be asked at check in and urine cups need to be done before intravenous is done as well. It is backwards! They charged me for a urine culture but St Dom didn't take a culture per my doctor that looked at my records. The ER doc gave me good antibiotic but not strong enough and was not long term as it should have been per my regular doctor. My regular doctor had to write me another antibiotic and make it stronger and long term. My regular doctor told me i had dangerous ecoli and almost septic by the blood work done at St. DOM. I was released in about 4 hours from St. DOM. My regular doctor had to seriously treat me with 2 antibiotics and he found from St Dom blood work my calcium was very high and my PTH was high as well and that should have been reported. That is dangerous for me because I have to take D3 to keep my parathyroid in level to not lose calcium because I have a parathyroid problem but St Dom never told me in the ERof the results of blood work. He never told me I had Ecoli either. In a few days, I contacted the female in patient advocacy and she was the rudest person. Very rude. I called Louisiana to find out another name besides her to tell my story. She said I could call and ask for her boss in Jackson but every time I called the rude lady answered phone. She made uncalled for remarks that were inappropriate. And being that the director (her boss) never called me back was her probably not giving message to her or they just didn't care enough. It's okay my mouth is enough marketing about the terrible experiences and not getting patient results timely to treat patients appropriately. St Dom has fallen in care like every other hospital, it is sad because St Dom was my goto hospital for family. I would not take any family member there anymore. read more

One for Hospital Services $1,158.00; and one for Physician Services $241.00. The only "services" I received was the consultation that included a weight in; blood pressure; and medication options. I was admitted for outpatient recurring incisional hernia repair. I was admitted at 6 AM and taken to OR waiting. The Pre OP staff was prompt and courteous. I had a visit from my surgical team for any questions and what to expect. I took the option to go home after the recovery period. My guests were allowed to be with me until I was taken to have the procedure done. After I woke up, I was given a dose of pain meds, instructions for home care, and I was on my way home by noon. I have no complaints about my care. read more

This hospital is a disgusting DISGRACE!!! My aunt came to this place against her better judgement and i whole heartedly believe they aided in her passing! They didnt want visitors because they knew they werent doing the right thing. My aunt was covered damn near head to toe with bed sores from not being turned properly. What kind of "nurses" and "doctors" do you all have staffing this piece of trash dump of a hospital. While attending UAB my aunt was getting cared for with love and regards to her wellbeing. At st dominic she CODED and the family was not made aware until the next day when we walked in and had to ASK!!! If you want your loved one to die....bring them here. NO EXCUSE. read more

Staff is sweet and kind, but they did absolutely nothing. After 10 days in the hospital, they wasted time conducting CAT scans and x-rays. On the 9th day, they decided to (finally) do a MRI, which should have been done on day 1. This hospital was truly a waste of time and money. Not to mention, the ER check-in was a nightmare. Unless you're bleeding out, don't expect to be taken care of for a few hours. Once checked in, they held back on insulin for a diabetic. When typically given 12 units, they gave a whopping 6! Long story short, St. Dominic's was sold to FMOL, and since then the administration all changed. It went to shit . Don't waste your time on Jackson hospitals, just go to your nearest major city. P.S. please teach your staff how to fax a report to another hospital. Or email. Or anything. Don't say you're going to communicate with outside doctors and not follow through. September 16, 2022 St. Dominic is known, historically, as a hospital that gives excellent quality care to their patients no matter who they are. It is an award-winning, private facility who's mission states "God has called us to administer compassion and health care in His name to the people of Mississippi." That is why, on more than one occasion, our family has trusted you all with the care of our father. It saddens and angers us to share that the trust we've held in you all has been broken. Our father's previous stay (August 11th- August 22nd) was exemplary. He was treated with dignity, respect and stellar nursing care. We were quite impressed with the nursing staff on the 6th floor. Kudos to the medical professionals who returned our father to us in a suitable and stable condition. Your mission also states, " At St. Dominic's, our team of caregivers views each individual as unique--to be treated with the utmost respect." However, we want to point out the lack of respect and poor level of nursing care rendered by your 2nd floor nursing staff during our father's most recent hospitalization(Room 2227 North- August 31st-present). Due to the lack of compassion, concern and best care practices of some of the second floor staff, (inadequate turning, re-positioning and padding) our father is in the pathetic condition of having bed/pressure sores. Even if the patient is in a most vulnerable and disagreeable state, the best practices of care must be implemented. Family members have witnessed, on several occasions, the soiled condition of his undergarments and bed linens. We are certain that you are aware of Joint Commission standards and your own standards of infection prevention control and cleanliness. The incidents when we have found our father in less than sanitary conditions prove that those standards have not been met. We have not seen 100% proper housekeeping throughout his stay. Finally, your mission also states, "we provide compassionate care and hope as a healing ministry". We are truly disappointed that in our father's recent stay, that compassionate care and hope weren't granted to our father, a Jackson, MS native and contributing citizen. Now that Franciscan Ministries purchased St. D my experience is St. D quality has gone down significantly. Examples. Twice I have experienced intake processes that took over 5 hours for actual clinical tests that took less than 30 mins. Also obvious is the lack of staff both nurses and CNAs. After a two day stay in the facility nearly all staff complained of these two things 1) Franciscan Ministries only cares about the money. 2) no one wants to work there because pay is low yet staff perception is Administration always gets a raise. (Could not validate that). I did check some websites and it appears over 200 nursing related positions were open. "Where is the lab ". St D eliminated care volunteers or care workers to help you find the labs. We often found including us patients walking floors looking for the locations of labs or another check in location. Normal admissions is first floor. Cardiology admissions moved to 11th floor and out first experience there was cardiology admissions ran out of chairs for waiting room patients. People were standing and eventually they sat people in offices. It took two hours before they asked for our insurance information. That is super tough on old cardio patients. I will say I think physicians and clinicians are superb but St D is appears to constantly be pressuring pay You hear these conversations in the hallways. St D is in the process of selecting a new CEO. My recommendation is the new CEO should check in as a patient and experience being a patient from the floor up. Example where do I park? Why are there four to five security guards at front door but don't appear to be doing anything? Poor signage in that one cannot find anything. Patient satisfaction is a measure of JAHCO I believe and I would give St D a "D" in regards to this. I did note nurses who had been there 25 years plus were all about patient care, real passion. I used to love St. Dominics so most of my doctors are there. But today has been absolutely ridiculous!!! I had an appointment to get my second Prolia shot at 10:00. I got there at 9:40. I went to check in at a very small waiting area that was full of people. I was told that I would have to go to Admissions and they handed me my file. Went to Admissions to get in a line of 12 people. Then go stand up and wait for them to call my name. There were about 20 people in that little waiting room. Finally got out of there only to go back to the super small area that I went to when I first arrived only to stand in line again. There was no social distancing in this tiny area and there were 5 people standing in the hallway. I am now in the area to get my shot and it is now 11:15 and still have not gotten my shot!. Just got my shot which took 2 seconds and I can finally leave!! Remember, I was only there to get a shot! Went to Admissions as I was instructed to do. This location has released my grandfather with no information, no future steps, and his foot is still in very bad shape. I am highly disappointed in how our visit went and every chance I get I am going to make sure everyone I see understands that if they have a chance to visit a different hospital to do so. My grandmother called up there after getting information from a nurse practitioner named brandy saying he was ok to be released and when she finally got ahold of his nurse she had no idea who a girl named brandy was and no release forms for him. My aunt was at this hospital once and was treated well. The layout is pretty plain and looks like every other hospital. The rooms aren't very spacious, but the beds are soft. read more

My husband has been ill with Parkinson's Plus for five years. While he likes his doctor at Saint Dominic's (the only reason we have not left) we have had great trouble throughout this journey with getting paperwork to the appropriate places. If and when it arrives it is missing pages, signatures or just has entire blank or missed sections. It took so long to get paperwork to Social Security four years ago, that SS sent him to another doctor for diagnosis because they could not receive a response of documentation from the office. We have to submit forms every year to our insurance company to document the decline of my husband's condition. This year our insurance company appealed to us for help in getting paperwork sent from St. Dominic's. Our representative said that St. D eventually sent the paperwork but whole sections were blank. Hometown Medical appealed to us to contact our doctor's office in the Spring because they could not get needed information from the office causing a month delay in getting my husband his wheelchair. Now, I am in need of paperwork to help me with caregiver FMLA as my husband's condition worsens. My employer has been so helpful and patient. However, as in all our dealings before has had to allow an extended approval pending the receipt of paperwork from the doctor's office. I requested the paperwork a month ago. I left messages for the records clerk. Her voicemail says allow 48 hours for a return call. I have never received a call back from the records clerk after leaving a message. I only spoke to her by calling the front desk finally as if we were making an appointment. I stayed on the phone with her (the records clerk) while she said she was faxing the page to my employer, went over it with her. It was the incorrect page. So today I am taking a long lunch, driving into Jackson in hopes of getting what I need. I called today to make sure they will be in. I was met with deep sighs and talking over me as if I am a problem. There is no compassion here for what we are dealing with and certainly not competent assistance.
