Welcome to St. John's, a parish of the Diocese of Western Michigan in the Episcopal Church. We are a diverse Christian community, following Jesus' teaching through liturgical worship, transformation in the mind of Christ, and the pursuit of reconciliation and justice in God's creation. This is summarized by our motto: Worship God. Be Transformed in Christ. Change the World. We gather for worship in English on Sundays at 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM and on Wednesdays at noon. We gather for worship in Spanish on Sundays at 12:45pm. Additionally, we have daily prayer Monday through Thursday, with morning prayer at 8:30 AM and evening prayer at 5:15 PM.

History

Established in 1866.

Our parish was founded one year after the conclusion of the American Civil War. The various Episcopal missions formed around West Michigan at this time were often chaplaincy in focus, with a priest serving a small and close-knit group of people. A small group of Episcopalians had been worshipping in Grand Haven since at least the 1840s; it was not until 1866 that the parish of St. John's was formed--making us the oldest house of worship continually in use in the Tri-Cities area. Throughout our history, there have been some significant constants. Our parish seems always to have been involved in the current issues of the day, whether that was civil rights, women's rights, or now gay rights. We have a history of strong music. We have long valued youth and young people, with each era developing new ways of reaching out and engaging children and young people. We also have a history of strong social ministry--one that adapts to meet the needs of the time. We value our diversity.

Meet the Manager: Fr. Jared C.

Father Cramer was raised in the Churches of Christ, and worked in several ministry positions in that tradition before moving into the Episcopal Church while completing his Master of Divinity at the Graduate School of Theology of Abilene Christian University in Abilene, TX. He then received his Anglican training through the completion of a Master of Sacred Theology at the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. He is currently nearing completion of the Doctor of Ministry degree at the same institution. Father Cramer is active in the Episcopal Church at many levels. He is the Dean of the Lakeshore Deanery of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan. He also serves the Diocese as Chair of the Commission on Ministry, as a Delegate to Province V Synod, and as an Alternate Deputy to General Convention. He resides in Grand Haven with his wife, Bethany, and their dog, Cappadocian.
