The 23 acre gardens are beautifully maintained, and the roads and pathways are constantly being repaired and cleaned. At the very back section is a memorial wall for the cremated, and this is the area where there are sections for other faiths. Payment to the gardens includes purchase of the lot. They have guidelines on the headstone and once this is paid for, the cost includes lifelong maintenance. The staff are wonderful. In particular, working with Patrick Mallard was a pleasure and very comforting. He is very respectful, and working with him was immensely reassuring. He worked on designing the headstone with me and was very respectful of my faith, and did the best he could to make sure my mother had the most appropriate headstone. I can't praise him enough as to how great he was. My mother passed away a few years ago and I see how well Mr. Mallard and his staff continue to upkeep the gardens. I find great solace in coming here every week and I feel Mr Mallard and his team should be recognized.

Just before A few months before Covid got started, my Mom passed after losing a battle with cancer. She happened to be in a rehab facility following surgery when it happened so they were the ones to call and let us know one evening. My brother and I were both obviously distraught, but things got worse when I called the next day to see what they next steps were. I won't go through the whole thing, but the short story is that before we had a chance to tell the facility where we wanted the body transferred to, they had a funeral home pick her up on their own. Their services were very expensive and way more than we were looking for. When I let them know what had happened that funeral home was very accomodating and apologetic when they learned those were not my wishes. They offered to deliver the body to any local funeral home or crematorium at no cost due to the mishap from the rehab facility. We weren't looking for a service because most of our family is in the Northeast. We wanted to do a simple cremation, and then transport the remains back to Boston for a service etc... After making some calls, I knew that Charleston Cremation Center was exactly what I needed. My brother and I came in to sit down and discuss the details. They were very professional and answered all my questions. They didn't try to play on emotions for any upsells and knew that we were looking to keep it simple. They even made the correct accomodations for flying with the remains and making sure we had all our necessary paperwork. All of our expectations were exceeded and the communication was stellar. All we needed was the basic cremation services and it saved us literally thousands of dollars from quotes I received elsewhere. They do offer funerals and more if you're looking for that too. Hopefully whatever situation you're going through that brought you to reading this review will give you piece of mind to assist in making the right decision for you and your loved ones.

The staff we interacted with were very nice and kind during a difficult time, which we appreciated. However, the facility itself just wasn't the right fit for our family. We understand the building is very old and has a lot of history (I believe it dates back to the 1800s), but it did feel a bit run down. The floors creaked quite a bit, there were decorative elements like mounted ducks throughout, and the exterior concrete was noticeably cracked. While it may be a good option for some families, it just didn't feel like the right environment for us during such an emotional time, so we chose to go with a different funeral home. I'm sure it serves others well, but this was simply our personal preference based on the atmosphere.

The current building was constructed in 1835 and boasts a beautiful, tall steeple. The interior of St. Philip's is stunning so if you're exploring the churchyard or cemetery, go inside the church and look around. It's usually open, with helpful guides to tell you all about it. Fact: it is the highest point in Charleston. Also, The church you see today is the second on this site. The original held its first service on Easter Sunday 1723, and burned down in a fire in February 1835. It also has the distinction of having both a churchyard (graves surrounding the church building itself) and a cemetery across the street. The view of Church Street punctuated by St. Philip's remains one of Charleston's most photographed spots.

A Wonderfully preserved, impeccably maintained historic Anglican Church…read more I visited recently (June 26) for the 10:30 Service, arriving early as the lovely choir was practicing that Sunday's hymns; obviously, they were a very robust, musically inclined group well lead by their Choir Director. As the church began to fill up I noticed that the congregation arrived in their 'Sunday Best'. In fact, the personal affluence was striking : lots of women in lovely, stylish hats and men in souther-style, gabardine suits with bow ties! I have to say however, although a friendly atmosphere was evident, I did not feel very welcome, as a casually dressed visitor. Added to this, was the cursory handshake by one of the more senior ministers as he strolled down the aisle prior to the service. Yet, this gesture was not accompanied by even at least a few words of introduction. I departed the service early given I was only there more for prayerful meditation and reflection ... left feeling a bit empty... Recommend visitors be prepared for a more elitist experience and less of perhaps of a warm welcome. I do hope my first exposure to St. Phillip's was just a flute and there is a deeper connection with the congregation! Good luck with your experience as mine was somewhat disappointing, first-time. R

Holy Cross is a small cemetery on James Island at the end of Harborview Rd. It's very peaceful and…read morepretty. They have the part of the cemetery that allows monuments on the perimeter, and, in the interior, you're allowed to have only the flat gravestones (so they can be mowed over). The monument area is more expensive and you have to buy a certain number of them (2-4, I think). The cemetery is open all the time, but if you want to speak to one of the office people, the office closes at 3. Also, if you want to have a funeral, it will cost you more after 3 and on weekends (because the workers are working outside their normal hours). People really take ownership of their graves here. There are flags with pictures of the deceased, solar lights, small statues, etc. The flat markers have vases that can be attached and practically everybody uses them. There are flowers all over the place. The cemetery is quite beautiful in the Spring. Azaleas are blooming and there are other flowering plants, which I've forgotten. The office lady, Pam, is very sweet and helpful. She seems to know where everybody in the cemetery is and refers to them by name. It's kind of a comfort to know you can go in there and she'll know right where your loved one is buried.
