I've been here a couple of times for small jobs--hemming pants, ripped crotch (blame my thighs)--but I just got back my first big formal wear alteration, and I'll base the substance of my review here on that. I bought a dress that was a couple sizes too big for me to wear as a guest to a wedding (actually bought the dress twice, but that's on me for not understanding UK sizes), and I decided it was easier to get a too large dress to fit than a too small dress. To that end, i was pretty much swimming in fabric. Both the cape and the dress had to be hemmed more than a coupla inches. I wore the shoes ill wear with the dress to the first fitting. Speaking of first fitting, I walked in without an appointment, but they were able to accommodate me and do the measurements and marking up. I also needed the halter tightened around the back of my neck and the waist brought in so the back piece laid flat against the small of my back. They could have brought the hips in, too, but we decided it wasn't necessary. I was nervous about giving instructions or ruining the garment/style, but Irina (the owner) was the one helping me the day I walked in and she was helpful in maintaining the integrity of the idea while making it fit. They gave me a month til I could come back (which was still a month before the event), and "lost" my dress upon pickup day. Scare quotes because they did find it that afternoon after i left, and I came back the next day to try it on and they gave me a small discount for the inconvenience/stress. I was not stressed because I was taking care of the tailoring so early (hopefully not TOO early...). Idk how much attention you get at a tailor, but everything seemed to fit right. This is a busy place, which is why they temporarily misplaced my items amidst their many many dress jobs. A man was getting fitted while I was picking up, which is why I didn't know if I would have recieved more attention otherwise (double booked? Again, didn't really need more?). Ive got a few pants for fall/winter that ill need hemmed so I'll be back. I remember hem jobs being like 20 per piece? Im kinda embarrassed about how much ive spent on this dress (including buying 2x mind you), but I'll say that the tailoring job, even before the discount, was like...70% of the retail price? Which i suppose is fair for totally resizing a formal piece? Anyway, Irina said I'd get a lot of compliments and she liked my style, which i hope both are true even if she was just being nice. read more

Went here for my wedding dress to be altered and the lady who did mine wasn't the owner and was very rude for one.. not only did she lie and say she wasn't going to butcher my moms wedding dress and DID. She messed my dress up. Also the prices are not worth it. Go anywhere else. I've even called where I got my dress to not recommend this place and had to get a new dress..... HORRIBLE!!!!!! read more

I have brought in three formal gowns in the last year, all of which only needed to be hemmed. One of the times, I was scheduled to pick up my dress on the day of the event. When I arrived, they had not even started it. Another one of the times, I called to confirm my pick-up, at which time they gave me a completely different pick-up date, two weeks later. When I went on that day, they were completely unable to find my gown and eventually determined that it had not been started, though they still could not find it in the store. I had to wait more than two more weeks. When I came to get it for the third time, they still could not immediately find it. All of these unreasonable delays do not even take into account the absurdly high prices -- $180 to get a gown hemmed. I would not recommend coming here. read more

This is THE place to go if you want to get ripped off!! (They deleted my first review so I'm reposting) TL;DR: They charged me $100 for hemming when I was told it would be $30-$40. They first said hemming started at $100 (this is NOT what they originally said or what their website says), and then they went back on that and said my dress (velvet, no layers) was a "specialty" fabric and it needed to be rushed, so there was an extra charge. Even though they told me (when I called in, before they knew when I needed it) it only takes a week for general hemming. It took 1.5 weeks and they said they had to charge extra for rush. Full Story: I called in advance to see if they could hem my dress and asked how long it would take. They said yes they could hem it and they said it typically only takes a week for hemming of normal dresses. I thought "great!" because I needed the dress in a week and a half. Their website has "bridal" alterations and "general" alterations. I had a regular dress I was going to wear as a bridesmaid dress. My dress should have fit under the "general" alterations category. It's velvet and has NO layers or linings. The price for "general" alterations is $30-$40. Maybe I should have verified the price, but I didn't think twice because my dress did NOT fall under the "bridal" category. It's not a bridal gown. I went to pick the dress up a week and a half later, and when I went to check out she just asked for my card. She did not say how much it was going to be. I had to ask her the cost. She said "it's $100." I replied, "I thought general alterations were $30-$40." In the most condescending, rude tone, she said "Excuse me?" I was taken aback - I was not trying to insult her, so I repeated, "This was just a regular dress, I thought they were just $30-$40." She said, "No. Hemming starts at $100 and increases after that." This is not what they said on their website. After I left, I checked again. And it in fact says, $30-$40 for shortening. I called them to see what the issue was and why I was charged $100 instead of $30-$40. The woman on the phone said "your dress was a 'specialty' material. And we had to rush the order." At NO POINT was I told my dress would cost more to hem because it was velvet. Even more, they told me (BEFORE I TOLD THEM WHEN I NEEDED THE DRESS) that it would only take a week. I needed it in a week and a half. When I gave them the date, they didn't say ANYTHING about it costing more. My biggest thing right now is the inconsistencies. One person told me hemming STARTS at $100 (this is a lie) and another said mine cost more because of the fabric of my dress and because it needed to be rushed (it didn't need to be rushed). The dress, itself, was $89. The hemming cost more than the dress. Please, tell me how this makes sense. Absolutely ridiculous. Very rude. Terrible communication. I brought in an expensive skirt, had to come back three times to pick it up and it got DESTROYED. The owner had HORRIBLE customer service. I do not recommend!! I came to pick up my skirt and it was not done the way that I had desired. The woman that owns the shop tried to fight me on it, but finally took it back. I came back a week later (when she told me to) and it wasn't ready. She tried to fight me AGAIN on when I was supposed to come back! It wasn't until she looked on the ticket and realized that I was right that she told me to come back in a few days. **no apology** Finally I came back and the skirt was destroyed. It was a suffocating around my waist, the sides were messy and bumpy. I just left. Obviously she wasn't able to fix it. And she wasn't going to be nice about it either. Totally unimpressed, won't be coming here again. I was referred by a long time customer so I gave them a shot. I had a $100 bridesmaid dress that I needed hemmed and the front to be tacked a little more shut. Let me also say that they didn't quote me a price when I was there other a comment that it wouldn't be much. So maybe it's my bad for not asking a hard price. I went in for fitting and it was ok but when I returned to pick up my dress I was not happy. When I walked into the shop and asked about my dress the woman handed me the dress and said $100 please and I was like should I try it on first? She said if you want to try its your call, it's your dress. So I walked into the dressing room to try on the dress as you should if you just had it altered to make sure that everything is okay. And it wasn't done right at all. To begin with the tacking job on the front of the dress was horrible it looked like a blind person at stitched it up in a matter of one minute. She proceeded to cut out all of the front tacking while it was on me. She restiched it and it still didn't look good. I suggested that I remove the dress as it might be easier. So I took it off and waited. She came back and it still wasn't right. Then I suggested she try it another way and voila! I was surprised it took so many try's. Needless to say I was frustrated. So when it was complete and time to pay I asked for a breakdown of the price and commented that $100 is way more than I had anticipated for a simple hem and tacking job. I also mentioned that when I came in, I said that I didn't want to spend a lot since it was a $100 dress to begin with. She gave some excuse that her boss sets the price, which I know is false because she owns the shop. She gave me attitude and said she'd knock off $5! I was insulted, paid and left. Couple weeks ago I went to St. Louis, MO for my sister's wedding. Two days prior to the wedding I realized my dress doesn't fit me the way it should. My sister recommended me to visit 'St. Louis Alterations' and see if they can fix it for me. I got there on Thursday and I picked my dress on Saturday: It was altered flawlessly! I can not complement Irina enough about her work: from fitting to pick up time- the process and quality are impressive!!! I brought two bespoke suit pants to have the pleats removed and legs narrowed. I was told it would be no problem. Turned out St. Louis Alterations could not do it nor did it want to do it. I also brought in an off the rack suit for alterations. The off the rack suit was improperly altered. The rates are very high and purposely misleading. The alterations on the off the rack suit were shoddy. People who answer the phone have great difficulty with English; thus, one is never quite sure what's being said. I recommend Brentwood Alteration and Tailoring. The owner and employees at St. Louis Alteration are incompetent and unwilling to fix the problems they create. read more

I had a terrible experience at St. Louis Alterations & Tailoring. I gave them three weeks to alter a bridesmaids dress which should be plenty of time to shorten simple shoulder straps. I got a call from them the day before the scheduled pickup. The dress wasn't ready. They asked if they could have another week. The wedding was the following week, so they said I could pick it up on a few days later. I agreed and showed up at the appointed time. It STILL was not ready. I was asked to come back again later. The next day, I showed up and the dress was done ... But not done correctly. I stood there as they repinned the dress and then fixed it while I waited. This place completely wasted my time and money. No apology for the delay. No discount. Just a bad job and a bad attitude. read more

I would give this business less than one star but that is not a possibility. My mom recently got her dress for my wedding altered here and it was an awful experience. She needed a simple hem preformed on the dress, which should entail making the bottom of the dress look exactly as it did before just shorter. The dress was severly creased and crinkled when they were done and did not lay right. When mom questioned them on it they refused to steam it and make it look like it should UNLESS mom paid them more money. She shouldn't of had to pay more money for a task that already been performed. This place does poor quality work and has TERRIBLE customer service. They do not care about doing a good job, they only care about taking your money. Do use them!! read more

worst experience ever and will never come back! will tell everyone i know not to come here. i came in on a thursday afternoon and asked if the business could altered my dress and have it done by saturday evening. i also told her that if she wasnt able to i would take my dress to a different place. she said that it would be okay and i could pick it up on saturday afternoon. she also said that she would call me when the dress was finished. saturday come and still no call from them so i decided to call. noone answered so i decided to go there. they were closed. i was so upset because they were also close on sunday. i couldn't iwear my dress to the event and had to spend more money and time looking for a new one. a week later still no call from the business to say my dress was ready! i finally calm down enough to go pick up my dress and told them what happened and the lady said to me that i should have called and i told her that i did and that noone answered. she didnt say anything else but what the price of the dress was. it was unprofessional and rude. read more
