I found its postage-sized shop and mini inventory very annoying and hardly worth the bother to come to in person--and I LOVE art stores! Its selection of textile supplies could fit in a small basket. The lone employee I saw was friendly. The shop cat was adorable. But I needed more inventory on display! I guess the focus is on online sales with brick and mortar retail an afterthought. read more

To provide context to my review, I have been in the art world professionally for 15 years as a tattooer. Art stores have been my place of belonging & peace. I thought I would have found one in this seemingly unique store online as I am based in CA as a full time tattooer. I frequent many in socal and other states while traveling. I am friends with many owners and are friends with even more employees. A couple days before my birthday, I ordered the tsunago pencil splicer and hit Apple Pay. Immediately I regretted it bc it was set to an old shipping address for some reason. One of those dumb flukes. I immediately called & spoke with a sweet employee who absolutely assured & guaranteed me that the lady who takes care of the emails would see it. Within 5 minutes of the phone call the email had been sent out. Fast forward to last night & I had recieved no email back, and no package. Upon checking the tracking it had been delivered to the old address. So I send out a couple emails describing my plight as I found out the item that I had ordered was now out of stock. I expressed how bummed I was. This morning I call the shop and talk to another very sweet employee and tell her my situation and feeling very good about the interaction & that I would be taken care of. 11 am rolls around and I check my email and see I have received one back finally, from Xena, who I learned is the owner of this establishment. Everything was polite, but incredibly condescending. She said that I was responsible for the mistake, and that there's nothing she's willing to do and that the original email I sent ended up in the spam folder. Took zero accountability, (assuming she had actually been told to look out for an email), then proceeded to urge me to look out for the product in their shop in the future. Lol. Xena, you are a silly goose if you think I would spend a single other cent or speak of your shop positively to any other single tattoo artist I meet. If there is someone I currently know who is purchasing from your shop I will certainly be telling them my experience with you, specifically. Ultimately, it was only 30 bucks, but you are not a friend. You are not like us, Xena. Otherwise, I had a great birthday. My prismacolors are still stumps though. read more

It's a disappointing change: St. Louis Art Supply is no longer for casual shoppers, but for shippees. It is a store for people who know what they want and prefer to order it online and have it sent or picked up in-person by 5 p.m., 5 days per week. The new store is a hole-in-the-wall with few products to browse. The rest are in the warehouse. An employee sits behind a reception counter (complete with plastic slides) and offers to help. But what I need is to see what you have! To touch things and to feel their weight. That's the main benefit to buying brick and mortar. They had no papers out for testing pens like they did at previous stores. What? I asked for one and was brought a full notebook to do that, which was something. This manicured look... No. The row of books about art... No. That isn't supply. Are they making more money by featuring such books or do those contribute to a more well-rounded look on social? Frustrating it is that nowhere on their website does it say any about a mask requirement, but they do require masks (see photo). That's the choice of management, but they need to be upfront about it. With my current allergy/sinus problems and skin issues, I wouldn't have chosen to go there to browse had I known I'd get a lower-quality breathing experience with my own bacteria on my splitting skin in their too-toasty small room. I'd already driven there, so I thought I'd go in. That was my choice. It's a shame because I liked St. Louis Art Supply in its previous 2 locations. The sense of community is absent now. Unless they move to a fourth location, I can't see myself going back or recommending it to anyone. I then went to Blick in the Loop for a much better experience. Blick is a BIG chain and St. Louis Art Supply has been negative about them in at least one recent Facebook post, portraying Blick as Fox Books and St. Louis Art Supply as The Shop Around the Corner. This is my go to local art store for a lot of painting supplies and stationery. They have oils , acrylics and watercolor paints as well as paper, canvas brushes etc to name a few things. They make their own in-house watercolor journals and those are great for traveling /plein-aeir/ urban sketching. They also have a ton of stationery, washi tapes and pens. Some of their stuff is really cute and pretty unique. They are only doing curbside right now due to covid but the ordering on the website and pickup is very easy and convenient. read more

I'm updating my review to reflect my experiences at the new location. It's super interesting because they change the displays to show the new things they get in. This store actively searches for new and interesting art supplies, and I find myself trying things I might not have considered. The new location is very different-a small showroom, carefully curated, and a large warehouse. It's snuggled in between a gym and the pet food pantry on Papin, neither of which are high traffic businesses, so parking is easy. During the week you'll want to watch for forklifts and trucks, and the pet food party is busy I think one Saturday a month, but it's usually pretty quiet. Masks are required, and that's both easy to respect and entirely understandable. There's a box of disposable masks outside the door. Going from the street, into the lobby, and into the shop feels a little like a Hogwarts adventure- you open the door and treasures await! I was excited to see the shop very full on my last visit. While it doesn't have the giant windows and vintage rugs, less of a coffee shop vibe, I love the carefully curated displays. And if you're a fountain pen fanatic, they have a lush new line of inks-Taisho Roman-which perform beautifully in everything from an extra fine Kaküno to a Sailor M205 (F) to a medium nib Lamy Safari. Very smooth, nice shading, and lovely feel on Tomoe River, Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Mnemosyne and HP 32# copy paper. One thing I found slightly unsettling that is very different from the old location: I'm unsure if you're meant to browse, maybe to keep people moving through the showroom so everyone has a chance to shop in a space that's a bit more snug than the former location on Olive. I went in to pick up an order, but if you leave me to my own devices with maybe a friendly greeting, I'll somehow leave with five ink bottles, three notebooks, a new pen and something random and I will immediately pay off my credit card so my sweet husband doesn't see a balance and ask what I needed for $200 at the art supply store (he knows it's ink and pens, it's always ink and pens.) This may be over-eagerness or inexperience but it has happened at both of my visits now so maybe just be aware, especially if you're very introverted or easily embarrassed, that you'll be loudly asked if you just came in and what do you need? This was never my experience at the old location where I always felt welcome (most of the staff is just consistently incredible, likely because Ellie is such a good manager) but I think if you're not great with that kind of interaction maybe browse their website because it's lovely and you can find wonderful surprises there, too. One last thing: I have noticed that for the things I buy consistently, the prices and quality (by leaps and bounds) at STL Art Supply are better than any chain store or, honestly, most websites. The ability to try an item or see an ink before you buy it is such a great thing, and this is now the ONLY locally-owned art supply store in the region. That's important. And it is owned and run by artists, not suits, so you can find out how exactly to use your new items and they can suggest complementary items. Check hours before you go, because I think they have the showroom closed early in the week. If you are visiting St Louis this is a great stop as you tour the area, with great dining options nearby on Manchester, the Hill, in Tower Grove, Shaw, etc. I'm excited to see how they expand and grow. read more

My favorite was their custom three-color holbein gouache sets. You tell them what you like to paint and they send you three colors that they think will help you or compliment your palette. It's the perfect self-indulgence gift for beginners and seasoned professionals. Their customer service is on point and their shipping is fast and reliable. I currently live in California, but would like plan a special trip to visit their store in St. Louise once the pandemic is over. I have mixed feelings about this place. They are a small independent art supply store connected to a coffee shop. I appreciate that they have good quality supplies and nice staff. But when I placed an order with them, my Copic refills took over 2 months to come in. And I understand that Copic is an unpredictable supplier but my frustration was about the fact that I had to call them several times over a 4 weeks before someone remembered to get back to me and let me know what was going on with my delayed order. I appreciate that once they realized their error, they shipped me my items so I didn't have to make a special trip to come get them but I don't know if I'll order with them again considering my experience. read more

Or you'll look like me -- idiotic standing on the outside figuring out how the door works. When you walk in, look up. You'll see a cool loft-type space. You should check in here too. They have a yelp check in deal for eraser! And I got a magic rub eraser! (it's my favorite!) They have fountain pens, fountain pen inks, lots of nifty art supplies and an UPSTAIRS. This was our first time in South City Art Supply. How I missed this gem is beyond me. It has a great layout, with 2 floors. They have several paintings of local artists displayed around the store. The lady who greeted us was friendly and I think she had a dog, which was another bonus. First thing that impressed me was the prices. You could buy brushes on the cheap, like $2, $4, etc. From what I saw, it looked like they carried imitation brushes, which means they do not use any animal fur in their brushes. The canvas panel prices were awesome. We bought 8, 8x10 canvas panels for $10 (That's less than $1 dollar each for all you fuzzy math people out there). It doesn't seem like they carry any oil paint, but they do carry acrylic and watercolor. They do also have children's art supplies like Crayola and RoseArt, so if you are looking for supplies to keep the kiddos busy this summer, they can hook you up. There was a ton of stuff in clearance and sale (especially on the second floor). It's a great place for the casual artist or student who want to get a bang for their buck. read more

For what it is, a tiny, neighborhood art store - this is such a little gem! It's not massive, so it doesn't have a HUGE selection of products, but what it does have is a very thoughtfully curated stock. The products they keep are hard to find in a lot of other places (lots of neat brush pen options, and Faber Castell water color pencils which I haven't found anywhere else!). The prices are really good (not 'boutique' - if that makes sense) and very reasonable to be honest. Had a fantastic experience here and will definitely be back soon! The store was cozy and well-curated, with very reasonably priced items. I was able to purchase an exacto knife, self-healing paper cutting mat, and large Scotch tape for under $15. I also splurged on some origami rice paper ($15 for 20 sheets), which is prettier and of better quality than I've found at any other art supply or paper store in St. Louis so far. When I went to check out, the owner let me try out some ink pen nibs (they sell vintage/antique nibs and make their own ink!) and inspired me to begin practicing my calligraphy.
