Stopped in to get some Christmas gifts for my future son in law who's an art teacher. He usually uses the supplies at his school for his pieces, but really wants to start doing a lot more at home which meant he needed some basic starter supplies. I've never been to the store before this and really had no clue what I needed to buy. The staff was very helpful at selecting some items based on what someone that does pottery normal would need. The prices seemed fair and there was a huge selection of items to pick from. I also loved how spaced out the store was with room between the merchandise. Thank you, Krueger, for not only having the best price I could find on my new Brent C wheel, but also for getting it to me in one piece! I originally purchased a wheel from a competitor and unfortunately it arrived damaged (which voided the warranty) and it was a huge pain to orchestrate a return and refund. Once that went through though, I found Krueger, realized the price was even better, learned they used a more reliable shipping company, and voila (!), my new wheel is here safe and sound. I'm also impressed that the few times I've called the store someone always picks up and is helpful. Can't say the same for some other pottery supply stores. As well as the option to bring your work to be fired in their kilns for a fee by the pound. I ordered and paid for some supplies over 5 months ago and have not received my order and I can't get a response to emails or voice mails I have left. I am blown away at how horrible the customer service is. Really... 5 months ago I paid for product and I can't even get a response to get a refund. 2nd Update: I finally received the kiln shelves, 7 days after ordering, and they are a mess! Chipped edges in some places, overhanging sharp edges in other places! They are also NOT 6 inches wide, as they are supposed to be, but both come up short! Definitely NOT professional or even good quality! It is shameful that this company sends out such mediocre items. These are NOT the quality that any professional pottery supply would send out and they should be ashamed for taking my money and then sending me such sub-par items! Update: The nasty attitude and lack of accountability from the person I spoke with was completely off-putting and rude. The tone of the response below to my original review is far different from that which was used on the phone with me. As I said on the phone, I have no desire to give your company any further business. The person I spoke to refused to listen when I tried to mention Their Own website stating that orders placed before 3pm will be filled that day. I placed my order at 10:37 AM, well before 3pm. I also paid for what is clearly stated in your checkout as 3 day shipping (I have screenshots). It is now 6 days later and still no package. Your $10 "gift card" offer doesn't even cover the $13.50 I paid for what is clearly NOT three day shipping. Bad business practices all around and yes, very rude customer service. This was my first and last purchase from this company. I have been a ceramicist for 20 years. I recommend people look elsewhere for their pottery supplies. There are plenty of other places online that have even better prices and a better selection (that they actually have in stock). My biggest mistake was ordering from their company in the first place. I hope the kiln shelves I purchased arrive intact. Extremely rude customer service! If I could give no stars, I would. I spoke with someone on the phone right after they opened about placing an order via the online site. I then placed the order 37 minutes after they opened. I called later that day about half an hour before closing time to find out an ETA for shipping, ect., since I had not received any further email or info about my order and was told my order "didn't get in on time" to be fulfilled or taken care of that day. Since I called that day 37 minutes after they opened, and had called prior that morning informing them that I was going to placing that order, I assumed someone would make the effort to check their online sales orders. But No. Their website clearly states that ANY order made before 3pm will be filled that day, and checkout clearly shows Three Day Shipping. It is now 6 days since placing my order and still no package. I called last night and the person said they would look into it, put me on hold, came back and said they would call me back in the morning. I received a phone call this morning from someone who just said "a message was left saying you had a question about your order" and the person on the phone was extremely rude and spoke as if they did me a favor by fulfilling an order of items that are clearly available for purchase on the website and told me "we are a small business" as an excuse. Guess what, I also have a small business, and I do not sell items I do not have. If you do not have an item, perhaps don't put it on your website as available if You Don't Have It. When I tried to point out that their website states that orders made before 3pm would be filled that day, he said "I let you talk, now let me talk". Obviously they do not actually stand behind the online order statements on the website. They are untrustworthy, and clearly try to sell items they do not have, then act rudely to a customer when they inquire as to why their own website terms of business are not being fulfilled. I am not in charge of making them do their jobs by checking online orders in a timely manner. I should not have to wait a week for items that I paid three day shipping for, and I definitely should not have someone being rude to me over the phone because they are incompetent. read more

For the rest of us who enjoy throwing a nice pot now and then, there is Krueger Pottery in Webster Groves. This is not a discount "we have everything you could ever want for every hobby" store, nor is it an art supply store with one table of ceramic supplies. This my friends is a business totally dedicated to ceramic arts. They have everything from wheels and kilns to every tool you can imagine, more glaze options than you'll use in a lifetime. Never tried pottery? You can take classes at Krueger. Have a question about anything pottery, call Ryan at Krueger. There are lots of options for pottery supplies on the internet. However, we happen to be lucky enough to have a great local supplier right here in River City. They are nice folks, the know their stuff, really, and the place is low key, not pushy. If you aren't looking to create something on your own, there is a small group of employees, students and local artist who display their work for sale. I lived in St. Louis for years and learned ceramics from number of different sources, initially taking from the community college, a class from Krueger, a class from Craft Alliance and ultimately went back for my BFA in ceramics at SIUE. During that time, Kruger was my main supplier. In the 10's years I lived in St. Louis I shopped there, I always had good service from Dennis (the original owner) and Ryan and Aimee, his wife, were always helpful and busy in the store. I watched the progress when they took over as they expanded the store, offered more classes, demonstrating artists and attracted better teachers. I moved away to Tennessee 8 years ago and still continue to buy some items from them online. I saw a rather scathing review of Krueger and the tone of the review was off-putting. If that was the way they approached Krueger (not to resolve an issue but to lay blame in a nasty way), I might have been rude too. As for pricing, every artist had to do their own due diligence to find the best prices for the quality they want. Cheapest is not always best. Now I have to travel a minimum of an hour and a half one way to get my supplies in Nashville and I try to order a lot online because this regional supply house is a LOT more expensive than Krueger. I wish Krueger were still in my neighborhood as all my experiences with them were great. They offer a great selection - and they service equipment that my nearest supplier doesn't. My new kiln from the Nashville supplier got dumped off at my back door. My girlfriend (years ago) ordered hers from Krueger and they came over and installed it for her. My second kiln I ordered online from Krueger after talking to Ryan about my needs...and it came with some extras my Nashville supplier didn't offer and at a cheaper cost. That means when you call, the store personnel may be tied up for a while - so if you're expecting to waited on immediately like this complainer did, it doesn't always happen. I used to live fairly close by a few years back and drove in to buy supplies: tools, glaze, stains, kiln furniture,etc. They offer a teacher's discount, which helps! When I moved to the Chicago area, I found myself irdering from their website because they carry such a diverse inventory PLUS they ship quickly and reasonably. Very knowledgeable staff and kind. Don't live in the area, but I recently found them online with a competitive price for an item I was in search of. Unlike a lot of online vendors, they offered a USPS option for shipping, which saved me a considerable amount, and made it feasible to order the item. My package arrived quickly, well packaged and in great condition. A second order resulted in a delay of about 10 days. My email inquiry about the delay was answered quickly, and my package was shipped soon after that--one item in my order was out of stock, and they waited to ship until they had it. I prefer this to another vendor I use a lot, who doesn't notify me of this, but simply notes the "out of stock" item on my invoice--so I don't know until the box arrives that I don't have everything I ordered. They have a good selection of ceramics supplies and I now check them routinely along with my other sources. read more

I'll just say that I have gotten the most thorough free advice, the best selection and range of products, and the most friendly service at this amazing place. Seriously, Ryan is an encyclopedia. I haven't had a single question that he couldn't answer. I literally go to this store at least three times a week to buy something I forgot to get or ask a question that the internet can't answer for me. I have purchased many bags of clay, glazes, hand building tools, glazing tools, firing equipment, and a kiln from Krueger, and I've been thrilled with it all. The snide, non-apologetic and self-congratulatory tone of his response is also a good indicator of the tone of his customer service. Another Yelp reviewer below that talks about "buying local" is clearly unaware that this business is basically a front for overpriced pottery supplies that you could get elsewhere online at much lower prices. They source little if anything from St. Louis, MO. Waiting days for items they order from their "warehouse" is basically waiting for items to be shipped from China or other foreign distributors. As they maintain a storefront in Webster Groves, you would think you could go in and purchase items made by local artisans. Nope! I went in looking for a gift for my mother and there wasn't a single finished piece for sale. Not only that but the owner was totally rude (in agreement with other reviewers) -- after eventually finishing up his phone call leaving a terse phone message for someone to come in and pick up a kiln they ordered, he directed his initial attention to the fellow who came in after me. When he finally had time for me, he confirmed they had no pottery for sale onsite. His general terse manner clearly made some of these overly glowing reviews a bit suspect. (Friends? Business associates perhaps?) Last but not least, if you compare the prices of their "classes" with those of Craft Alliance (a place that actually has SHOWS of local artists' work) you will realize they're also gauging students. I mean, we're talking DOUBLE -- $235 (!!!) vs. $169. They're even trying to sell them a pottery tool "starter kit" that currently has a "special" price of $13.99 marked down from obscene $21.99... which you can get online for $6.75!!! These guys really helped us out in a pinch. We were redoing some tile in our kitchen and one rare piece got broken. We ordered one online, but it came unglazed, and we needed it right away for the time guy. Most of the supplies and the goods in the store are USA made. A large amount of the prepared clay is mixed in Kentucky or southern Missouri.
