Black History Month is all year long! Kids learn from Prek to sing the Black National Anthem, recite the Ultimate Student and about the 7 Kwanzaa Principles, and their significance. Their small outdoor space faces the coffee shop so I see the kids and teachers outside often. The teachers are almost always on their phones. Recently I saw a toddler crying, trying to get the teacher's attention. She did finally get off her phone but I didn't see her tending to the child up to the point I walked inside the coffee shop. When I came back out the lady looked my way, but she still stayed on her phone all the while I got into the car to leave. I will say the other two teachers were appearing to interact with some of the other children, but the other lady couldn't look away from her phone. As I stated, often both teachers are glued to their phones every time I come. Was surprised this was a Reggio Emilia school, as what I've observed doesn't fall in line with its philosophy. If this were just a daycare I guess it wouldn't bother me as much since these specialized early childhood schools often command a much higher cost to parents. The expectation is the children get the benefits of experienced, dedicated teachers, not just whomever they can get as is the case in most daycares. As the mom of a toddler, I was especially bothered seeing the la k of response to the children crying. I'm grateful that we have been able to avoid daycare up to this point since these are my exact concerns with these places. The owners/directors should definitely try to implement some rules around phones, so caretakers will be more engaged, since we all know everyone is addicted to their phone. This is a reasonable request for most jobs, particularly when your job is to be present and responsive to young learners. Ok, stepping off my soapbox now.

Contrary to the area around, SG is a very well kept, private complex. Meaning they don't have people loitering and standing around at all and armed officers/security guards are ALWAYS on duty. ISA is located toward the back of the complex. Director Brower is very friendly and will answer all questions honestly. ISA is accommodating from what I've seen. They will work with and communicate with you on a daily basis about any problems your child may be having as well as their progress with learning the materials. My oldest is fairly shy and I've watched him become more talkative and outgoing since he has been here. My youngest has been picking up new words (not curse words) and they both have been enjoying going here. I would recommend them to anyone. My only gripe is they don't open at 5am. But that's personal.

The school facilities were pretty nice - walls decorated with school decorations and students' works. Very colorful setting that encouraged a safe space for learning. For a Saturday morning program, I was very impressed by the involvement and presence of the school administration. Teachers and the principal arrived on time, ready to engage with the students. Good teachers really don't get enough praise for their dedication. Students also arrived by school bus, which is a reliable and efficient way for students to get to a school program on the weekends - so cool! The thing that really topped it off for me was the diversity in the student population. The student body represents 31 different countries... yes THIRTY ONE countries. Most are children of refugees and come without an English background. You definitely would not be able to tell the latter because these kids were engaged throughout the program, displaying proficient in learning/comprehension. I am all for children growing up with diverse group of friends and learning cultural values early on in life. It's something that won't do harm in their future.
