The beautiful reredos behind the altar was gifted to Trinity College in Hartford, CT several years ago and apparently is still in storage, prior to being installed in the chapel there. The parish was merged with the St. Pauls Cathedral in Boston, an odd merging to my way of thinking. St. Pauls is all about "trendy", "touchy" and "feely". Not much in the way of traditions for them if they get in the way of "whats happening now", by golly. Heck, cathedral poobahs - when, um, "remodeling" the interior - wanted to put something above the main entrance, a symbol of some kind. (The original plan in 1819 was to have a sculpture in the pediment of St. Paul, preaching. That never happened.) They decided against having a Christian cross or crucifix above the door of their Christian cathedral because, "gasp!", it might not be WELCOMING to some. You know, kind of like not wanting an unwelcoming American flag inside the cathedral (as was done in decades past) or an unwelcoming bronze plaque that says, "famous person so and so worshipped here" because that guy owned a slave in 1723, a factoid that was unknown until some virtue signaling sleuth found a reference on page 1,299 of a book that hadnt been opened in 200 years. Instead, they put up a sculpture of a nautilus shell because its' joyous spiral shape symbolizes the spiral dance of life and our interconnectedness, yadda yadda vomit. Yup, nothing says, "welcome, seek the peace of God/Goddess herein" like a big seashell. They also cut two windows into the front of the historic early 19th century Greek Revival-style building, to make the church WELCOMING. I mean, with the windows and the shell, could it BE any more welcoming? Amazing how unwelcoming this place apparently was with over 200 years worth of memories, tears, laughter, prayer, Christian baptisms, first communions, weddings, funerals, Christmases, Easters, parish celebrations..... Not sure how many folks from St. John the Evangelist went to St. Pauls and stayed. Some went to the Church of the Advent, another gorgeous high Anglican church in Boston that would easily remind them of their former parish, albeit larger and maybe a bit more impersonal during coffee hour. The loss of St. John the Evangelist hurt many. It felt like a small parish where people new each other and it was steeped in many of the traditions that the founding Cowley Fathers bequeathed to it. Oh well, when the new age God/Goddess Jesus dances, you have to pay the piper.

St. John's on Bowdoin Street is the "other" Episcopal Church on Beacon Hill- the other being the…read moreChurch of the Advent. Like the Advent, St. John's also bills itself as an Anglo-Catholic parish, but has a drastically different feel to its liturgy. Its sanctuary was damaged by fire and rebuilt as an eclectic mix of gothic and modern stylings; the service is likewise eclectic and comes across as more Broad Church than High Church. It gets a big plus as a welcoming church (it's far more hospitable than the Advent); and the small, diverse, and loyal congregation warmly greets you during coffee hour. But as an urban parish, it's membership seems transitory. Many people seemed to attend because they like "High Church" but had alienating experiences at the Advent.

Maplewood Baptist Church is a dedicated, loving church. They preach the Word of God as it should…read morebe preached. Pastor Gary McClenthen is a warm, sincere pastor, who really cares about his congregation. His sermons really make you think about what it is to be a Christian. He preaches about how God is all love. Jesus Christ is our savior and intercessor. The devil is the accuser. God will forgive all of our sins if we repent and turn to Jesus Christ. Maplewood Baptist Church is a warm and welcoming church. The people are warm and caring. Sometimes, the church building may not feel that warm, because there are problems with the furnace. However, it is worth the small discomfort to come and be among friends, who really care about each other.

Here is the history of the church taken directly from their website! Sources linked below: Prior to 1870, very few Italian immigrants resided in Boston. Rapidly, there grew a number of Italians leaving their homes and country to find a better life in a new world. Along with the immigrants came the rich traditions of Catholicism and legacies of strong faith and devotion to the Church. Tending to the spiritual needs of his people, Archbishop Williams called upon the Order of Friar Minors, the Franciscans, many whom were recent immigrants themselves; to go out and serve those in need, and so began what is now known as Saint Leonard of Port Maurice Church. Originally situated on a small lot of land, within a decade the continued influx of Italian immigrants prompted the need for a larger place of spiritual respite. Construction began on the Saint Anthony Shrine, named for a great Franciscan saint, with many devotees from the old country. By the mid-1890's, the parishioners numbered close to twenty thousand. Once again, the Friars recognized the need for a larger worship space to accommodate the faithful. Under the leadership of pastor Father Ubaldus Pandolfi, OFM, the community raised $160,000.00 (the equivalent of over $4 million in 2018) to begin construction. On November 6, 1899, the dedicated parishioners saw the consecration of the new upper church, named after Saint Leonard of Port Maurice, OFM. Known as "Father of the Italian Immigrant," Father Pandolfi continued to follow the footsteps of our Seraphic Father Francis as he sought to minister to the next generation. Calling to the Franciscan Sisters for help, Saint Anthony School, situated on parish property, opened in 1902 with an enrollment of 200 children. Within two years, enrollment doubled to 400 children necessitating the construction of a larger school. Throughout the 20th century, loyal parishioners and the Franciscan Friars built on their humble foundations, consistently reaching out to those most in need. Responding to the deadly influenza epidemic of 1917-1919 and the many orphans left in its' devastating wake; then-pastor Father Antonio Sousa, OFM and several community members speared a fundraising campaign to create the Home for Italian Children. Located in nearby Jamaica Plain, the Home for Italian Children officially opened in 1921 with 30 children. The dawn of the 21st century saw Saint Leonard Church incorporate Saint Mary's Chapel (formerly run by the Jesuit priests) and Sacred Heart Italian Church (formerly run by the Scalabrini Fathers) in the North End of Boston into what became Saint Leonard Parish. The Franciscan Friars continue their ministry to the combined Parish with two worship sites: Saint Leonard Church and Sacred Heart Church. Spirituality, fraternity, and tradition continue to be the center of life at Saint Leonard of Port Maurice Parish. Our first morning in Boston was a Sunday and we quickly located this nearby church using the "Mass…read moreTimes" app. Loved the old time neighborhood and this beautiful, iconic church. The architecture and interior were quite lovely. Coming from Hawaii, we were overjoyed that by Boston ordinance, face masks are optional in houses of worship! We happily complied and stuffed ours quickly into our pockets! When in Rome..... Then to add further to our delight, the diocese of Boston also allows for singing! Deo Gratias! The polyphonic choir with organ accompaniment performed hymns that I had not heard since I was a boy (and my eyes started "sweating"). The holy sacrifice of the Mass was deeply Eucharistic and solemn! We felt Christ's presence and rejoiced by offering up "our own bodies as meaningful sacrifice", as St Paul instructs us, "... is your proper mode of worship". We stayed after Mass as long as we could (sanitizing immediately followed) and prayed before the sacred tabernacle next to a beautifully pious grandmother and her young grandson. Faith is still alive here! So grateful for so many gifts especially for the opportunity to come here and celebrate/participate in Mass in historic Boston. Mahalo to everyone for being so kind to us visitors and also for reading my review.
