I mean, if that's not a Sign... (heh.) I don't think any of the three of us had set foot in an Episcopalian church before -- I was raised alternately Unitarian and UCC Protestant, one friend is Catholic, the other I think Christian in the I-celebrate-Christmas sense. But I don't think any of us felt uncomfortable there. We attended the 5pm service -- I can't tell from the website if they're still doing it -- a low-key, intimate affair in the smaller chapel beside the church. The demographic was young and diverse, and the reverend and the folks helping with the service were friendly. We didn't end up going back, but that was no fault of Emmanuel's. I found the service meaningful. I think my Catholic friend was a little startled at the sermon's emphasis on social action and ministry -- I thought it was pretty great (and, okay, reminded me of home). I actually had no idea that Emmanuel did music in such a big way, or else I think I would have pushed for dragging ourselves out of bed for the main service. I'll have to go back for their concerts sometime.

Either way, I had an incredible experience at Mosaic Boston. The worship was beautiful and NOT overdone/distracting, the speaker was intelligent and eloquent, and the people were chill. On several occasions while there with my own…read more2 kids, I've seen the teachers bring the kids to the playground at Moakley & one specific teacher is clearly under the influence/smoking cigarettes the entire time they're there. On game days, when all the surrounding lots jack their prices up to $50-60, this tiny church on Jersey Street accepts charitable (read: tax deductible) donations of only $30 for one of 10 spots, supervised the whole night. And by whole night, they say "til an hour after the game," but they say it with a wink and a smile and an undertone of "don't push it." And I respect that. And while again, I can't speak to measures of churchiness, it's Anglican worship. So if you're down with the A word, they're all about that grace 'bout that grace, no devil. (I read that Trainor pun on another church sign once and needed to use it somewhere. You're welcome.)

It's such a vibrant and meaningful community. I have so many friends from this community, and there's so many people to support me through life. Young adults, families and kids, wiser folks. I'm sure the reviewer Kilroy was welcomed warmly but had a right-wing ax to grind. I have never seen dedication and love practiced better and the kind of partisan politics which Kilroy uses as a threatening weapon is not practiced here. Many of this grateful community are very conservative elderly people practicing different faiths. Was Kilroy really here if he is a genuine identity? And if he was, was he a privileged tourist from one of the wealthiest and and most conservative spots in California ? Has he reviewed charitable food sites in Orange County ? Although this is a non-denominational site, we appreciate Jesus' admonition to feed the hungry.
