The entire staff is welcoming, caring and energetic! The small classes, family-like feel and religious values are carried across their classrooms, annual family events and organized community events. They attended Oneonta for three years ending their time their more than ready for first grade. As a result, our kids are more than prepared for first grade. Anytime we had a concern all of the faculty addressed them with care, empathy and concern. I truly felt we had a partnership with everyone there at our school. My kids came from a Montessori school and I wanted to continue the same curriculum. My kids had such an incredible experience at Oneonta and are still there! As a mother of 3 kiddos, I loved that all the teachers knew the kiddos names right away and would communicate frequently via the dojo app, whether they were photos of their activities, classes, and even events when my husband and I couldn't make it to an event at school. From Ms. Theresa to Ms. Vangie, Ms. Carol, and Ms. Maryann, plus Ms. Fiona and Ms. Christina, it's been easy to communicate with them throughout my kids' education. They offer the STEM program and knowing that my kids are being taught these subjects will help them prepare for middle school and up. Coming from a catholic school and public school background, I was impressed by what the school had to offer with the activities/field trips/science fairs/math and spelling bees, plus a fun summer program! Note that we were interested in the Mandarin program, so my observations shared here are mainly based on that aspect. This model should be replicated nationwide. Growing up, my parents had to choose between a public German immersion school and our local parochial school. They prioritized faith, which was the right call, but at All Souls, parents don't have to make that compromise--you get both! Dr. Allison is the principal, and after multiple conversations, it was clear how much he "gets it." He has an extensive background in education, and seems like exactly the person you would trust in charge of a growing and thriving school like this. He instills confidence. We met with teachers, parents, and staff, and everyone is kind and the teachers seem like great educators. The classes have very good teacher-to-student ratios. The weekly schedule is better than essentially all other schools, including early release on Fridays (perfect time to schedule doctor appts, dental appts, music lessons, etc.) and Mass only every other week (which is smart because it doesn't burn the kids out on it). Also, it is a very food-allergy-friendly school, with no nut/peanut classrooms TK-2 just to name one thing. For anyone weighing the benefits of language immersion against a faith-based environment, All Souls proves you really can have both without compromise.

The current principal works hard. I think the Spanish program is still decent but academically this school is behind public schools. A lot of kids leave needing intervention or tutoring unless your kid is academically way ahead. I love the small class sizes and loving environment but we left due to the huge teacher turnover resulting in some grades with terrible teachers. If they beef up the academics a bit there may be hope.

There's a lot of heart here, but as a single mom, I want to share a few tips for other parents considering this school: * Ratios vs. Reality: While online stats say 13:1, that's not true. TK class of 20 and class of 35 beginning in 1st grade. There is an aide and teacher per grade level. It's a significant jump from the "official" numbers listed on niche and other sites describing this school with small classroom sizes. * The Assessment: My 3-year-old was interviewed alone in a small room; a tough separation if you aren't expecting it. * Transparency: Between a 3-hour Sunday commitment (Mass plus tour), 2 hr weekday school tour, a weekday interview on a different date than the tour, and the $125 fee, I wish there was more clarity on actual spot availability upfront instead of "we encourage you to apply right away." Ultimately, my child wasn't accepted which was a blessing in disguise (we found a welcoming Catholic school to start his TK adventure in the fall). The rejection letter cited "fit," and while it encouraged us to resubmit next year, I didn't consider this a viable option. It felt a bit dismissive to ask a family to repeat such a time-intensive, costly process without any feedback on what "fit" actually meant or what would change next time. I as the one who picked them up, was usually greeted with, "this was the worse day ever!" Some parents were friendly, however most were not. When we arrived at San Gabriel, I was surprised to be greeted by some very friendly people who I acknowledge as great friends now! That was the same welcome my grandchildren received from not only the students, but all the staff as well! Dr. Barillas has been so friendly and is always there when needed! She always makes it a point to come up and strike up a lil conversation with me when she sees me. I like that! At Other schools the principal hides. I don't understand why there is so much negativity. I feel we all should look for the positive and make this school shine! The education my kids are receiving is great!
