She personally dropped off weekly activity kits for my daughter and surprised us with a photo book at the end of the year with snapshots of our daughter's remote learning journey. We were looking forward to joining Ms Rubio's Pre-K class this past year, but due to LA County's Safer at Home mandate, their preschool was not able to open for in-person learning for Fall 2020. In the meantime, their head of school, Dr Patzlaff, and their lower school director, Mrs Paciorek, were very attentive and provided guidance on age appropriate activities our kids could engage in and continue in their development. In nine years, my daughter was enrolled in four different Catholic schools. I feel this review may have some good insight and leverage with an honest review. Safety first. St. Luke's suggested we keep my daughter in school despite how uncomfortable I felt leaving her there all day. They advised that it was the best I could do for her. They sat with me and my daughter, and confronted all issues at hand. They made sure we understood what it was going to take for us to be able to grow out of fear and into Christs love. Was it easy? No. Was it worth it, yes. Zero issues with bully parents and zero issues with bratty kids. The platform was leveled to everyone attending. They provided an unbiased platform. Community Second. They have amazing community! No snobby, standoffish parents. They offer great community. We are not from the area, this is my husband's alumni, however, they never made us feel like outsiders. Ever. They have an incredibly sweet community! Last. Academics. Above average, by far. They set you up for success. They offer Decathlon and Robotics, and compete plus place 1st, 2nd, 3rd against other schools. These are outstanding programs the school offers. The workload is intense, substantially tougher than other nearby schools. Other Catholic schools in the area do not offer diversity or inclusion. St. Luke's offers a beautiful and diverse community, which is what my family needed. St. Lukes offers child conflict resolution, which is pretty basic, simple and fair. Classes get divided up, kids are buddied with upper to lower grades. In other words, the upper classes buddy up with the lower classes. This way, the classmates don't have time to pick on each other or bully one another. It's a pretty smart idea. At lunch, sports have a weekly rotation, which is also pretty smart. So, I think this works out, one week volleyball, one week soccer, one week kickball, etc. if your kid doesn't want to play, they can hang out with friends on the field. Btw-they have an amazing field! But, the magical part of this all, the kids get along pretty well. It's such a positive, loving, friendly and hopeful atmosphere that the kids are a very well rounded bunch. Be. Still. My. Heart. Let's face it. Parents are not the easiest to deal with. Teachers and principals are way in over their heads, are over worked, and overlooked for the good deeds they do all day, everyday. You want to place your child in the best possible hands. St. Lukes comes highly recommended. I could finally sleep at night, knowing we were treated fairly, and with respect. Was it all good? No. There is some bad, but it's not horrible. He started at 2 1/2, and it was a big transition for him -- he was an only child, still on a pacifier, not yet potty trained, and very used to being "babied" at home. The teachers and Director Melina were so supportive and patient during that period. They guided us with strategies for home, encouraged his development, and even helped us through a smooth, seamless potty-training journey. Fast forward to now: he's 4 1/2, and the difference is incredible. His language, motor skills, and overall development have grown so much. He's always been a friendly, energetic little boy, and we've seen real improvement in his focus, social skills, and participation in class. We're constantly amazed by what he knows and what he comes home excited to share. The teachers are caring, nurturing, and professional, and Director Melina truly runs the school with heart. In the 2014-2015 school year, three teachers won for the Halloween costume contest and were promised a pizza party for their class. However, that promise was never fulfilled. There were more promises that were never fulfilled. For example, in 2013, she announced that if the students behaved well, there would be a small celebration on the last Friday of every month. I'd say that our behavior was alright, but it only happened once, and during that one time, everybody had to stand outside in the stifling heat for a long time and listen to her blah blahs and a DJ that was probably paid so much for doing literally nothing. That event was more for the little kids, though. Also, Ramona Elementary's traditional Mustang Salad Bowl event perished as the new principal came into power two years ago. I don't know if this is just a coincidence that it ended when she came to this school or she just decided to cut off the promotion that encourages kids to eat healthy and exercise often. Also, the principal wasted about $40,000 for an artist to come to the school to let us draw on cardboard boxes, teach us how to draw an elephant, and let us use Playdoh to sculpt ourselves as a baby. We could've used that money for more appetizing cafeteria food, new playground equipment, more exciting field trips, etc. Adding to, the principal scheduled many assemblies that diminished class time, which some teachers did not like. During March or April of 2015, there was a situation where a student almost broke a teacher's printer with a sheet of notebook paper and scraps of paper. Unfortunately, the culprit would not admit to their deed. The teachers and the principal threatened to take away the eighth graders' promotion activities. However, no one would confess. Afterwards, they tried to use a scare tactic of contacting the police and threatening to fingerprint the students. However, a student announced to his peers that they cannot fingerprint the students without permission from parents. And here's the thing: the teachers and the principal knew that. The "mature" adults were boosting the idea of dishonesty. The construction of a new playground was finally finished in 2014. Unfortunately, the upper graders were not allowed on it whatsoever supposedly because, one student quoted, "we're too big and fat." That rule caused an uproar for equality, especially from the eighth graders. After a while, the upper graders earned the right to go on only the swings. Nearing the end of the 2014-2015 school year, the rest of the playground that was restricted to the older ones was scarce of kids. The supervisors were still given orders to not let us up the playful apparatus. There are many more issues that this school (mainly the principal) has to resolve. The principal was promoting broken promises, throwing money down the drain, lies, not sharing, etc. The principal wasn't promoting eating healthy, exercising more often, or primary education.
