Clairbourn School definitely has an abundant resources and opportunities to provide! What really made me so happy about switching over to Clairbourn was their strong emphasis on teaching and instilling kindness and respect for one another. Clairbourn also really felt like a family, a very caring and welcoming community. Every event they put on is so carefully thought out. Their back-to-school STEM event was amazing, the Grandparents/Parents Appreciation Days were so special, their Entrepreneur/Family BBQ was so much fun and their Christmas Show production was so well put-together. Unfortunately COVID hit us all by surprise in March 2020. I applaud how quickly Mrs Rankin learned and adapted to providing a virtual learning setting for the remainder of the school year. She personally dropped off weekly activity kits for my daughter and surprised us with a photo book at the end of the year with snapshots of our daughter's remote learning journey. We were looking forward to joining Ms Rubio's Pre-K class this past year, but due to LA County's Safer at Home mandate, their preschool was not able to open for in-person learning for Fall 2020. In the meantime, their head of school, Dr Patzlaff, and their lower school director, Mrs Paciorek, were very attentive and provided guidance on age appropriate activities our kids could engage in and continue in their development. They've been very communicative throughout this past year and very flexible and understanding of each family's situation. Your child will be loved at Clairbourn School--200%! There's 3 K classes this year, her teacher Ms. Wei is wonderful, caring, detail oriented, she focuses on well being activities like helping the kids manage emotions in addition to learning Mandarin. With the 90:10 model they have Ms. Wei who teaches in Mandarin for the day and then for one hour they go to a separate English teacher. As they get older the English class time increases, as everyone tells me and I believe it, don't worry about their English falling behind, they catch up easily around 3rd grade. We are non-native speakers as I would say the majority of the class is too, it's quite diverse I must say, every type of Asian and different ethnicities, it's wonderful. Field does a great job celebrating all nationalities and every holiday with emphasis on the Chinese culture. There's seriously so many fun activities every week, the parents are so involved volunteering and wanting to make the school better. So even if you don't know any Mandarin, the kids pick it up so well and the teachers are so great in teaching it, my kid was singing and meditating in Mandarin by month two hah. The principal Ms. Tucker is great too, she' very into finding ways to improve the school and better the future for the program. Now that we are here, I can say it is a very good school, but it is not perfect. The teachers are very knowledgeable and most of them really care about helping students. My son has found a few teachers he really connects with, which makes a big difference. The campus is clean and safe, and the students are serious about school but not boring. They also have a lot of activities like sports, theater, and clubs, which I like because it keeps the kids balanced. At the same time, I feel like Prep expects the students to manage everything by themselves. If your child is already very outgoing and knows what they want, it is a great place. But if your child is quieter, or needs more help finding their way, it can feel overwhelming. Sometimes I wish the school checked in more instead of just assuming the kids will ask for help if they need it. Also, socially it is a little tricky. Most students are friendly on the surface, but real friendships are hard to build if you are not already part of a group. It can be lonely sometimes, especially for new students. Overall, I am still very happy my son is at Prep, but it took longer to feel comfortable than I expected. You really have to be your child's advocate and make sure they speak up and find their place.

There are a couple things that I think are worth pointing out to highlight. Curriculum This is no glorified day care where kids are playing all day. There is structured time for the kids throughout the day. My kids learned important life skills needed in the classroom, and had plenty of time to learn through play as well. The staff also gives updates through focused parent teacher meetings that allow you to track the progress and development of your kid as the year goes on. This was incredible helpful for us. Teachers The teachers our boys had were incredible. Kind, caring, intentional, engaging, patient, and supportive. But if I can highlight one thing, is that they are excellent at communicating with parents. They really helped to foster a parent/teacher partnership to help reinforce important values being taught. They helped thinking of out of the box approaches to help students become more engaged, and pass those along to parents. Any concerns were brought up promptly and were addressed. Overall we have been incredibly thankful for the staff and school. The support, care, and compassion they have for the students is immeasurable. We couldn't be happier.
