A strong Franciscan parish, that exudes openness and is very welcoming to all visitors. I have many fond memories here as I recall happily several key role models who shaped my life--primarily, the wonderful relatives, friends, priests and nuns who took such a compassionate interest in teaching us kids. Today, the parish demographics have changed... instead of Italian being the primary spoken non English language heard in and around the church, it is now Spanish but the caring Franciscan spirituality is still as alive as ever. Recently, the church celebrated its 100 year anniversary. Constructed in 1917, the church was built by Sicilian and Italian immigrants in a mid-Renaissance 14th century style. Complete with stained glass windows, a Tuscan style bell tower with real forged bells, and Italian "tegile" (terra cotta roof tiles). But the most magnificent feature is the priceless frescoes that decorate the vaulted ceiling above the altar. These are executed in a late 16th century Italian style reminiscent of Rubens and Donatello. This is a true gem among churches and the architecture is conducive to prayer and proper contemplation of God. Many weddings are held here as it is one of the few remaining churches that retains a sense and feeling of holiness while keeping all of the beauty and splendor of mankind giving his best artistry to God. Best of all, it's a community dedicated to worshipping God through the expenditure of love and mercy to others. Definitely worth a visit. See their webpage for hours, ministries, and details. She's kind of a big deal considering she'd be the second American-born saint. Just a little trivia for ya. I think this church is beautiful. The altar, the ceilings, everything. I'm pro a simple aesthetic when it comes to churches, but the details inside Holy Family remind me of a church in Italy that I loved. The seating is cross style with most of the seats in the center in front of the altar and then two "arms" of seats extending to the side. The sound system is a little strange. The microphone in the ambo (where the lector reads) is embedded so when you're up there, sometimes you're not sure if you're being loud or soft. Only graduates of St. Elizabeth College and the Academy of St. Elizabeth can get married in the chapel, which is a little perk considering the tuition at both institutions. I also heard there are some intense catacombs underneath this place. Yipes.. I'm such a wuss I've never prodded about the issue. NOTE: While writing this review, the speakers on my computer have been going in and out. So I'm gonna end it right here. :/

The chapel was beautiful the day of! But remember brides- there is no air conditioning just fans so be aware for summer weddings. You need to bring your own priest/deacon, organist/singer, etc. However, Sister Maureen was very helpful in recommending people to us to help. She was very patient and answered all our questions. She also allowed us to come visit the chapel many times beforehand. I would definitely recommend this chapel for weddings!

The priests here were very supportive when my family was having a rough time, so for that I'll always be grateful.. even if one of the priests did forget my brother's name during a really awkward moment. hah Their music is okay. They usually have a cantor, a pianist/organist, and sometimes other instrumentalists. To be honest I feel like the musicians don't always sync up. I think that some of the musicians are volunteers first, musicians second. They do have some groups come in to sing that have been very good, but for the most part the morning masses don't jive with me as much as my old church. I'm more into band music at mass now and they're more on the traditional side. Parking can be a bit of a problem if you're running late and if you're coming in just as mass is starting, head in through the side door near the parking lot so you don't have a run in with priest at the front door! So I gave things a rest and a break; and on May 20th, I Revisited their Facebook page and there was an actual digital flyer for women's day May 21st !! It had two guest female pastors, both from New Hope Baptist Church, one in East Orange and one in Newark, along with praise dance and all sorts of beautiful Christian things. So My very first time as a visitor at First Baptist Church of Nutley was women's day May 21st, 2017. Of course as a newcomer into a new church, you never know the kind of reaction you are going to receive and I say this because I have had not so good experiences in other Baptist Churches. But once I entered into the church, I was greeted by the some members, deacons and the deaconesses and especially welcomed by the Pastor. And ever since then, I continually came early, courtesy of the man of the year, Deacon Bobby. So early that I had breakfast, attend Sunday school for adults and also the 11 a.m. service. In my own personal experience, despite my career despite my level of Education, I have had trials and tribulations for many years of my life and even currently. And with every song that was sung, with every word that was preached, with every chapter read in the Bible, with every Sunday school reading- I personally felt the message was directed towards me; because each word or message applied to my life whether past, present or future. And with each and every service or gathering or Sunday School, my spirit was lifted and I was filled with joy. I was rejuvenated in Christ and I was encouraged, which then increased my faith and had me craving more. And because of that experience and because everyone has been so loving and so welcoming to me and everybody was just excited about me being there and everybody wanted me to join. Everyone kept asking, when is Tiffany going to join? My confirmation to join, my confirmation that this is my church home, was through every message I received from the Sunday school, the Bible scriptures and the word being delivered by a deacon or pastor or a singer who is singing a message that needs to be heard; and especially the love that I received from all the members that I have been in contact with; everyone welcomed me with open arms and it felt like this is home. This is where God wants me to serve. I feel so blessed and grateful that I finally found the church time (11am. Next sunday 10am), but even more grateful that I found a church home that excites me everytime I come and it's always something I look forward to attending on Sunday. I feel so uplifted and encourage and full of the Holy Spirit and it feels like it's helping me build a closer relationship with God and I am craving more wisdom and knowledge of my walk in Christianity. I am blessed for everyone welcoming me into this church family and I encourage you to visit this church and experience what I have, because the spirit is in the church and you will be blessed by the word. And did I mention my pastor can sing his butt off ? direct the choir ? My pastor can do it all through Christ! He is amazing and he tells it straight. He keeps it real and is not ashamed or embarrassed about his testimony. He shares all the time. And that shows great leadership and humility. Amen.

We are all blessed, Jesus is inviting us to visit Him in church, and at Holy Mass. There's nothing ever greater than receiving Jesus Christ The Son of The Living God, true God and true Man, Second Person of The Holy Trinity, Son of Mary & Joseph truly present in the Holy Eucharist.

If you lose a person in your immediate family, and have the mass there as my family did, just know they will be kind and open minded and gentle. And honestly, that's the best thing you can wish for in a time of crisis.
