Stacey has taught me so much of what I know about diet and exercise. I spent so many years as a person that felt stuck in a body that NEEDED to be exercised and NEEDED to be restricted to a certain diet in order for it to work and look the way I wanted it to. It made every workout and every meal into a high stakes situation, and I found myself yoyoing between a "nice" and a "gross" body, and beating myself up over every food and exercise-related decision I made. I couldn't make any of my strategies stick, because they ultimately placed too much stress and too much of a burden on myself to be sustainable. I started to work with Stacey with this mindset. This summer, I caught a glimpse of myself in the background of some photos from a friend's bachelorette and knew I needed help. I weighed in at a whopping 232 pounds - the heaviest I've ever been in my life. I have come to know Stacey over six months. I started by taking taking her core stability class on Sundays and then moved on to take group training with her. Stacey is well informed on body mechanics. She knows exactly when your core isn't "firing" or your glutes are not firing and she goes for them. I was not able to complete my group fitness program with Stacey because I was suffering from severe headaches so I did not benefit from the change in body mechanics and fitness that Stacey could have provided through her instruction. The potential client should know that Stacey is all about form and she is a stickler for it. She is no-nonsense so do not bring your excuses. I entered Stacey's lair a cripple, or nearly so, in terms of my range of motion around my shoulders. Lots of pain when trying to do the simplest of things, like closing a car trunk, or reaching behind drivers seat for something in back, and very many non-driving related tasks too. Plus I was signed up to run my first Tough Mudder within a few months, and if you've haven't heard of it, it's a 12 mile obstacle course that puts tremendous strength, flexibility and endurance demands on all parts of your body. Long story short: Stacey put me through a battery of diagnostics, isolated the issues, and got to work ... or you could say put me to work. And work it did. I made it through the Mudder no problem at age 49 and completed an obstacle called the Funky Monkey which is massively shoulder strength oriented ... 50 feet or so of inclining and declining, greased and sometimes spinning monkey bars above a pit of freezing water that comes late in the course when you're already exhausted. I made it all the way across and didn't notice many others who did. Today I continue to do the custom moves Stacey designed for me, and continue to experience the benefits. I came to Stacey because I knew I wanted/needed to make changes and I didn't know where to begin. In all seriousness, I started out just wanting to be more active so I could be a better dog "mom". A friend recommended I meet with Stacey as she was a fan of her strength training classes at South Boston Yoga. The consultation wasn't what I thought it would be. I assumed it would be a test of my physical strength and flexibility or something. When Stacey began asking me questions about why I was interested in fat loss, what my hopes and goals were in the long term, how I was feeling physically and emotionally, I knew two things: this wasn't going to be some "quick fix" program promising me a bikini body in X amount of weeks and it also wasn't just about having low self-esteem or a poor self-image due to my being overweight. In due time, I was going to realize that improving the way I felt about myself was about so much more than how I looked and how much I weighed. Nearly two years later, I am thriving from Stacey's multifaceted, sustainable approach where methods for improved physical health and wellbeing can be as unique as my needs are any given week. I had to get out of my own way if I wanted to feel better. So I joined a small group personal training session and also signed up for the nutrition group. Being a part of the encouraging network of folks there game me a community and support. If you would have asked me a couple years ago if I thought I'd ever love exercise, I would have laughed at you. However, now I can say that I love it! I'm NOT a morning person but the morning workout sessions have become a part of my routine that fuel me most during the week. I love that my workouts are tailored just for me and one reason I show up is because I know Stacey will! I used to think exercise was punishment for poor food choices. In the nutrition group I truly learned why there are no "good" or "bad" foods. I'd say my progress has been slow/gradual, but that is what is sustainable for me. As a college athlete, I've worked with numerous trainers and fitness professionals. I honestly don't know where to begin when it comes to my experience with Stacey. I started on this journey in preparation for my upcoming wedding. Fast forward five months and I'm realizing its become so, so much more than that. This is now for me, for my life, and not just for my wedding. Stacey taught me that living a healthy lifestyle isn't black and white, there's no right and wrong, there's no magic equation to make those extra pounds come off. She taught me that it's all about 80/20, it's okay to enjoy a piece of chocolate every once in awhile, and most of all that slow progress is still progress. My body has changed in a way that I've never imagined. Yes, I log my food everyday and yes I still overthink what I'm eating sometimes but the bottom line is - IT'S ALL ABOUT FOOD. Don't get me wrong, I feel stronger from my strength training with Stacey but those training sessions would mean nothing if I wasn't fueling my body with the right food. Before Stacey I was eating all wrong. I may have only been eating 1200 calories but it was 1200 calories of the wrong thing (i.e. - 80g of fat, 150g of carbs, and 50g of protein - LIKE WHAT!!!!!). Stacey had me eating 300 MORE calories than I was prior to, and shifting my macros significantly to fit my goals. LIFE CHANGING. Also, before Stacey I thought cardio was the key to weight loss. HAHA I was wrong...I rarely do cardio now and when I do it's at Barry's Bootcamp in combination with strength training. Thanks to Stacey, I'm able to get on the treadmill and run without feeling tired simply because I'm stronger and my body is fueled with the right food and nutrients. People ask me if I will stop living this way post wedding...my answer is - HELL NO. I'm no longer doing this to lose the pounds, I started this journey fluctuating between 135-137 pounds...5 months in, I am fluctuating between 122-123 pounds...this is still mind boggling for me. After coming up on my fourth year of ITBS and various other running injuries, I decided to put running on indefinite pause and start working on strength. Stacey excels at her job, because she never has to go to work a single day in her life. She loves what she does, and it unapologetically pours out of her. A passionate and talented trainer, with equal parts natural ability and hard work (from books, mentors, workshops, and most precisely, her own sweat). To understand my praise of Stacey, you have to understand where I come from. 7 years ago I was encouraged to take yoga by my physical therapist after several dramatic muscle tears and wild structural deficiencies/imbalances that started to rear their ugly head as I said goodbye to my 20's, and realized that in my 30's, I'm not in my 20's anymore. Harsh. Humbling. Stacey did not have me lift weight one during our first session. Rather, she spent the hour performing an extensive postural assessment; identifying my imbalances, deficiencies, tendencies, over compensations, etc. Once an informed foundation was laid, construction, or should I say, re-construction, could begin. Stacey tailored workouts to suit my needs and progression. At 6'4", 210#, and a career athlete, I was skeptical of the small, precise, controlled movements she had prescribed for me. I have been working out with Stacey for about 2 years. I first met Stacey when taking her core strength class. I appreciated her instruction, style and technique in class and moved on to 1:1 sessions with her. I am in my mid 40s and I travel for work approximately 75% of the time so staying on a consistent workout schedule is difficult. The program Stacey has developed for me has actually made it possible for me to work out less. Now I work out 3 - 4 days a week and by training more efficiently and using heavier weights and kettlebells, I am in better shape. Another important concept that Stacey focuses on and helped me understand is the importance of body awareness. Understanding how each side can be different and what to focus on to get the most out of your work out, like understanding where you should feel it in your butt to get the most out of those squats!! You are wasting a lot of time if you are not doing it properly with good form, which is the other interesting thing about Stacey's training.......there are no mirrors in the studio yet I've learned more from her about proper technique and form. I found Stacey in Dec 2011. During the initial consultation, I was impressed with her thorough line of questioning and her philosophy about working out. Since then, I haven't been disappointed. She is obsessed with form and targeting a person's weak areas to improve overall fitness. When I initially showed up, my goals were to lean up, improve my strength and reduce some pain I had in my back. She put me through an initial assessment to determine my balance and flexibility levels, as well as some basic strength. She pinpointed my weak areas and why I was having some pain and gave me corrective exercises, which I did about 5 times per week. Then, once per week, she ran me through progressively harder and harder moves that targeted my weak spots. I'm a vegetarian and one thing she told me in the beginning was that I needed to eat more protein. Eating too many carbs was giving me a poochy tummy! So I started drinking protein drinks and focusing more on eating healthy fats and more protein from Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, egg whites, etc. That has made a huge difference and flattened my stomach. For the first 6 months, I did one-on-one sessions with her once per week, and have recently moved into a once-per-week group class, which is wonderful. She also teaches a fantastic core stability class that you can try for free. And just know that with Stacey, you will not be working on advanced kettle bell moves on day one or even day five or day 10. Form and ability are a priority for her; she will not risk you doing a move wrong and hurt yourself. She starts you out slowly with moves that will have you sweating like mad even if the moves themselves don't seem crazy tough. But stick with it. Once you reach a particular fitness level, she will having you doing Turkish Getups and other kettle bell moves that bust your butt. And more than that, you will have balanced strength and flexibility and superior form. I have recommended Stacey to all of my friends and would give her 10 stars if Yelp allowed! read more

When I first found Stacey, I was on a mission to find a way to make fitness and exercise a part of my life. In college I was a D1 athlete, but I'm not what you're picturing - I was a coxswain for a Men's rowing team. Yes, that person that tells people what to do. I am maybe 100lbs soaking wet, and surprisingly shy and quite in a group. Once you get to know me, as Stacey has, however you would laugh at this description. After college, I went through a phase where I thought the solution was running. It was an easy and accessible way to workout - I could do it anywhere. But if I was being honest with myself, I've only ever run one 5k (with pressure from friends) and hated every minute of it. My boyfriend loves crossfit, but at my size and given what I knew from my college athlete days about how easy it is to get hurt, I knew that wasn't for me. I'd been to South Boston Yoga a few times before, and after reading some reviews on Yelp, decided to give Stacey's kettlebell strength class a try. Even in our early interactions, Stacey was the perfect balance of teaching and encouraging me to do more, while also sizing things down to my very beginner level. To this day, I can count on her to call me out when I'm taking things too easy, but also to know when I'm having an off day. She's always there to give me a modified version of the exercise when I'm struggling, using the wrong muscles, or just plan overthinking it. We all have mornings we don't want to get up, but knowing that if I'm not there multiple people will reach out to me and ask why, combined with the energy of everyone once you're there, really does make it easier. We also buy packs of sessions and there's a (friendly) 24hr cancellation policy - these may seem simple, but they are enough accountability that it's much easier to show up each week. Plus, I always feel like my mornings are off to a better start on Thursdays when I see Stacey. As a longtime South Boston Yoga studio member, I knew about Stacey's classes but was always too intimidated to join. On the recommendation of a coworker, however, I signed up for semiprivate classes with Stacey and I've never looked back. I didn't walk into her class with any injuries or special needs; I just wasn't educated about how to incorporate strength into my fitness routine. Thanks to Stacey I've learned so much about my body and how to strength train based on my needs and abilities. About six months after I started working out with Stacey, I got pregnant. Stacey was one of the first people I told and she immediately tailored my workouts so that I wouldn't put too much stress on my body, but also so that I could maintain a level of fitness as I got further along, and so that I could bounce back post-pregnancy. Before I met Stacey, my view on exercise and nutrition had been the same my whole life - exercise more and eat less. Since elementary school, I've always struggled with my weight. I would go through cycles where I would walk on a treadmill 5x a week and just eat salads, drink coffee/Red Bull, etc. I would lose weight, but couldn't maintain the lifestyle for very long without being burnt-out, starving, and exhausted, and would then go through bingeing periods eating everything in sight because I had been depriving my body of any real nutrition. I started strength training with Stacey in January 2017, when my daughter was 8mos old. I was a tired new mom in need of a workout routine that I could do from home and that didn't require so much of my time (since you have 0 extra time with a baby anyway). Smart Strength was my answer; lifting weights doesn't just make me feel physically strong, but also mentally. I feel so empowered as a woman, and I love when my daughter tries to exercise with me (do weights like mama!). In September I started her nutrition program, learning what the hell macros are, and that protein is the key to it all. About a month later, my mom unexpectedly passed away. It was, undoubtedly, the worst time of my life. Somehow instead of reverting back to old, poor habits, I managed to try and stay on course. I realized that even though I can't control the bad shit that that happens around me, I can control ME. Numbers don't mean much compared to how you feel (both mind and body) but it does feel pretty damn good to weigh 70lbs ( YES SEVENTY POUNDS ) less than when began my lifestyle change, AND to be able to enjoy the summertime in a two piece I will forever be grateful to Stacey for her guidance, encouragement, and wisdom throughout the process. I set a goal to run 12 races in 2013, totaling a race a month. I knew that I had some issues with injury and general muscle weakness and that I would need some help accomplishing this goal. I knew Stacey outside of the studio, she was my neighbor! After I set this goal I knew exactly who to go to for a no nonsense assessment of where I am, a clear discussion of where I want to go, and the tough love I'd need to get there. I was right! Within a month of working with Stacey I could feel my body changing and my February race demonstrated the positive changes. In the time that I've worked with Stacey we've increased my stability and strength in addition to my knowledge base to preserve my body moving through this running journey. (GLUTES. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GLUTES!) We've also overcome a number of bumps in the road. I slipped on ice in February and had some trouble with my ankle afterward. Stacey met with me and took me through a few low impact movements and new foam rolling positions and I successfully PRed in my February race. She makes notes on each session so this injury from February is still on her radar, which is great. I recently ran Boston's Run to Remember half marathon. In the week leading up to the race I started having horrible pain in my hip flexors to the point where I was in tears worrying that I wouldn't be able to run. I met with Stacey and we carefully walked through where the pain was and carefully established routines for the days leading up to the race and for race morning. She also made sure that I was in a good mental space, that I really believed everything would be OK for the race, and that meant a lot. I followed our plan and raced a personal best at the half marathon distance and maintained my goal minutes per mile for the duration of the 13.1! None of these milestones would be possible without the support and hard work from Stacey. She has helped me realize that I can do more than just go and stamp out long distance. Stacey has shown me that I can be in control of running and my progress from training in the gym to training on the road and that rest is as important as putting in the miles. I'm excited to see where the second half of my year long journey will take me on the road and in my work with Stacey. I had been working out with Stacey for almost 2 years when I found out I was pregnant. Since Stacey had just had a baby of her own, I knew she would be a guiding light for me throughout the journey. So many women are scared to workout during pregnancy because there isn't a lot of information. Working with Stacey was the best thing I did for myself and for my baby. She designed a program for me every few weeks, allowing us to focus on areas that needed extra attention, meaning I really never had bad back pain or major issues throughout the entire 9 + months. In fact, workouts with Stacey were the place I felt the most comfortable. When I pushed my daughter out in just 20 minutes, the Nurses and midwives were dying to know what I had done to prepare. I am a 52 year old woman. I started working with Stacey a little over a year ago. I was getting over the tragic death of my sister and was completely out of shape and had not exercised in years. I was so nervous in my first class and could barely lift a 5lb weight. I had no idea what I was doing and was extremely intimidated. The class seemed like they all had been doing strength training for a long time and I was not sure if it was the right fit for me. Stacey was very patient though and focused on my form and not what I could lift. She made me want to learn and do better. Stacey and I went to college together, and after graduation I followed her career in figure competitions, strength training and personal training with great interest. Fast-forward many years later, I was inspired to contact Stacey for help this year after reading one of her yelp reviews that she re-posted to Facebook. Early last year, I experienced episodes of intense lower back pain that left me unable to function normally. I sought different treatment modalities for it - acupuncture, tui na, orthopedic massage, PT, posture therapy and even saw a doctor and chiropractor. While these different methods gave me temporary relief, the soreness and pain in my lower back remained. So I did some research online on corrective exercises and found this - http://www.jtsstrength.com/articles/2014/04/11/5-steps-healing-low-back-pain/ - which eventually led me to reach out to Stacey. At first, I thought I had to hit a long pause on my usual workouts in order to address my lower back issues, but what Stacey helped me to appreciate was that strength training was part of the solution. Thanks to her expertise, I have been able to not only manage, but to get lasting relief from lower back pain, through routines that focus on strengthening my core and my glutes. Stacey emphasizes proper posture, alignment and technique, along with modifying routines when necessary. I had a minor knee injury a few months ago and was so bummed about it, because I thought I wouldn't be able to work out anymore but Stacey came to the rescue and helped me see the brighter side: workouts are still possible and it meant concentrating on other areas of the body. That gave me a lot of hope, because I love my time for exercise. I think it is really one good way to practice self-care, and Stacey helped me see that I could still do it safely and conscientiously, despite the injury. From Stacey, I have also learned not to go crazy over cardio workouts and have rediscovered my love for taking long walks. I used to do Spinning and Zumba 2-3x a week, and I would feel utterly exhausted each time, which then made me ravenous. Not only do I get my steps in, I also find that my mind and soul are calmer afterwards. Stacey's mission in life is to help others feel incredible. She really commits to helping each one of her clients find their own magical balance of health, so we are all comfortable moving and shaking in our own skin. So...I have been relatively active most of my life. Have been to trainers, was heavy into spin and Pilates and Barre classes. All good, but not good enough. Seemed to be focused in limited areas and not an overall health and fitness routine. As a woman in her late (very late) 50s, I felt the impact of age in little things; how it felt to jog across the street at an intersection, hauling my outdoor furniture inside and outside each year (solid teak is HEAVY!!) and even how I felt getting out of bed each morning. My diet was also a challenge. I never had to worry about what I ate - my metabolism took care of keeping me slim. A cold hard slap in the face after you reach 50. Can't do what you used to do and maintain what you had. Nope, never, impossible or keep dreaming for most of us. I wanted and needed some structure and although I began with Stacey (almost 9 months ago) with the thought of strength training alone, I got so much more. With Stacey's guidance, my diet has improved and I am more knowledgeable and thoughtful about what I eat and what impact it has on my body and mind. Occasional deviations are welcomed because she knows we are all human and need to indulge once in a while - funny how certain "bad" things aren't as appealing as they used to be. It's a marathon and you have to be willing to put in the time and effort. Strength training with Stacey (also includes some cardio as well) has improved my posture, balance, sleep, alignment and definitely my mood, not to mention the shape of my body and the strength I have gained. Now when I sprint to cross the street it doesn't feel like my body will break. My furniture moving is not a chore as much as a quick workout - I even hoisted a large AC unit above my shoulders. I trained with Stacey to initially look great for my wedding, but once I started I knew it would be something I'd do for life! I was especially excited to continue training with her when I found out I was pregnant since she had recently gone through the experience herself, and was so knowledgeable and passionate about the pregnancy journey. I know women who stopped working out during their pregnancy and have so many aches and pains, both during and after baby. I first met Stacey at a core strengthening class at South Boston Yoga. Knowing nothing about kettle bells, I was eager to try something new as my gym routines/personal trainers were getting boring. We started with a relaxing but extremely effective warm-up of rolling specific muscles on a lacrosse ball and foam roller along with some other exercises to help us prepare the body for our workout. I was in shock at how ready and willing my body was to start and continue the workout. Having a knee surgery at the age of 16 I have always been leery of injury. Any exercise I felt uncomfortable with Stacey was able to give me just as an effective modified version. She also took the time to correct my posture, alignment and technique to ensure the maximum benefit from every move. Stacey puts her whole heart into her workouts and her clients. I have benefited immensely from working with Stacey. My posture is better, I am thinner, stronger, faster and more toned. I no longer fear injury as she prepares the body so well before, during and after her workouts. Her knowledge of the body is extensive. Her workouts are extremely effective and her nutrition advice is brilliant. I workout less, eat and sleep more and still see amazing results working with Stacey. I often say to her "I wish I felt this great after my own gym workouts!" After that first class I have attended every week for a year. In fact, this class is often the highlight of my week. I started working with Stacey at the recommendation of a good friend earlier this year. I had serious back pain from years of skiing and biking, which ended up giving me lower back/disc problems. Over the course of the past three years I saw two back surgeons and three different physical therapists. None of them bothered to do more than either prescribe pain killers or give me random exercises that I could just have downloaded myself. Nothing seemed to help and the pain only got worse. I knew Stacey's approach was different on my first visit with her. She began by asking me some pointed questions about my history, and then proceeded to do a full and detailed observation of such basic things as my posture and how I performed basic movements. From there we began with correctives and then moved to some basic strength exercises that focused on stability and balance, and then moving to work with kettlebells. Each work out was more strenuous than the next but I never felt that my damaged back muscles were at all at risk. Stacey has a very advanced understanding of the intricacies of the body and in particular the importance of core and balance to overall health and pain free movement-- the careful attention she gives during the sessions focuses on her clients' particular weaknesses, and she leaves you with detailed and tailormade exercises to do between sessions. She is able to target neglected muscles and also can identify deficiencies in your previous workouts so if you are used to doing basic upper body exercises/weights at the gym like I was be prepared for an entirely different experience. In the end it works - after working with her for only 8 sessions I could definitely feel fundamental imrpovements in basic posture and movements, and was able to get back to skiing without the pain that I was used to feeling. Unlike many PTs I've visited over the years, Stacey walks the walk and I think enjoys working out herself as much as she does teaching and helping her clients. And, finally, despite the fact that she is likely much more in shape then most of her clients will ever be she is always super friendly and knows how to make your workouts enjoyable-- I'd easily recommend her. read more

Stacey is an amazing trainer. In the first place, I want to look like her - she's such an inspiration herself. In the second place, she's helping me get there by structuring a program that is unique to my needs and my body. I first began taking her circuit training class at South Boston Yoga, and then was thrilled to sign up for the more personalized smaller classes she offers at the studio. When we met, we discussed my workout history, where my body was now, what I was doing to work out, and where I wanted my body to be. Over the last 5 weeks, I've noticed a dramatic improvement, not only in the lean muscle I'm beginning to show, but also in things like my hips being realigned, which has helped my posture and the way I walk. All other types of exercise I do also feel more efficient, now that I am getting personalized attention.
