Went to Standard Barber for the first time today. The shop just reopened from having reconstruction done to open it up more. It has a very nice small layout, but all wide open after taking out a wall. When it's finished I'm sure it will look great. Got my hair and beard trimmed by Joseph. He was the only one in and while the place was getting a ton of calls he was able to manage both, being a little short handed for the day. He was very personable and easy to talk to. I'm very happy with the work he did. I will definitely be going back. I'm also very interested in seeing how it will look with the reconstruction complete. Not flexible with appt time. I usually have to wait pass my appt time to get my hair cut but when this one time I told them I'm gonna be 10 mins late they said they wont see me. For the price $25+ tip, its def not worth the way customers being treated. I have no problem with the quality of the haircut and the barbers, however, and always tip them well. read more

Surprised this place is still in business. Went here about about 2 years ago. Told the barber what I wanted which was short on the sides and back, leave the top. He said, "Yeah. I'm so glad I chose to come to Standard Barber to end my self-haircut streak. I love that this place is downtown, in a historic building and with antique barber chairs. It's definitely a cool space. My barber was great, too! He took my requests into mind and even made some suggestions about my neck line (cuz you don't want that lookin' crusty). I don't believe in reviewing barbershops until you have gone at least a few times. I can't tell you how many times I've been to a place and got a great haircut, but then the second one was terrible. I'm not the type of person who is ok with going 50/50 on haircuts. Let's face it, they are important. That being said I have been here 7 times now and completely satisfied with each cut. You definitely need to make an appointment. Once you do they send you a text reminder the day before. I have had cuts by 3 of the 4 different masters barbers. I strongly recommend !!!! read more

Asked for a simple LOW fade........ not only did I get a super high fade but it was almost to the skin. Specifically asked for nothing off the top......... that request was completely ignored. And to top it off he went ahead and started Lining up spots. Dave does a wonderful job, i never have received so many compliments about a haircut. Great spot, great location, they do an awesome job with haircuts, amd pay excellent attention to detail. Call ahead, make an appointment. Walk-ins are not advised. This is not a borics, it's also not a pompous place. I don't normally do this, but I recently had such a frustrating experience, I feel like I should share it. Not only is it ridiculously pretentious for a Barber shop to require appointments, but the guys in there were rude, dismissive, and apparently couldn't follow an explicit request for what I wanted done. I left with the opposite of what I asked for, despite several attempts to clarify and set him on the right course. He made me look like a fat suburban stockbroker from the early 1980's and gave me so much attitude when I expressed my disappointment, you'd think he was under the impression that he did a fantastic job. Why a man who cant seem to treat his clients with any sort of respect, or listen to simple instructions calls himself a "Master Barber" and hands out bespoke little self-loving business cards is beyond me. Seems like the owners imported all the attitude and pretense from New York along with their business model and funding mechanisms. Too bad they didn't import some talent as well. Of all the great new businesses popping up around this city, the Standard Barber Company is sadly not one of them. read more

Very upset with my experience with this place and didn't even get my haircut... Came in and sat down. No one said a word to me. I sat there for a over 40 minutes and still not one word. When I thought it was my turn, I stood up and the guy said he had to take the guy who just walked in. He turned to the other guy and asked if he was taking off after he finished the cut he was doing and he said yes while I'm just standing there. The sign says they close at 8 and this is at 5:30. So the guy hands me card and says I can call tomorrow.... Yeah right. What a joke... I don't know if they are good at cutting hair but I do know they are bad at business. My husband and I recently took a trip to Detroit for a friend's wedding, and the day before the wedding my husband needed a haircut. He is super picky about his hair (possibly because the amount of it has been dwindling a bit recently) and the concierge at our hotel recommended Standard Barber Company. The barbershop has a really cool feel with old school barber chairs, exposed brick, old Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue covers on the wall, etc. But the best part was the cut they gave my husband - they did a great job and he looked hot at the wedding the next day! Right away I knew I was going to have a great experience at the Standard Barber co. Firstly its located in one of my favorite flat-iron style buildings downtown behind a set of bright red double doors. Sitting next to the stairs leading up to the second floor where the shop overlooks Cadillac square there is a barber chair and a wood framed chalk board with their logo, hours, & pointing hand directing you upstairs. An excellent touch. I walked in to see several gentlemen waiting their turns engaged in a lively conversation and the first barber I could see welcomed me, asked if I was a walk-in or had an appointment (which I did), and offered water or Vernor's from a vintage refrigerator. Waiting my turn I looked around to find more Detroit made merchandise like a Detroit Bicycle company bike & Beard Balm. Once in the chair my barber Joe, a new arrival to the D via Kansas City, deftly shaped my seven months of wild beard growth into a neat, cool summer style perfect for my 20 year high school reunion. He asked Sterling for a low fade, but nothing too extreme or too short. He had the chair facing a wall instead of a mirror so he was in for a shock when he saw a mostly bald head. Got worried when I saw that it was so new, but decided to give it a shot. All told, it was a great experience. Clean cut. Cool barber. This place is great. It's $20 for a regular haircut and neck shave(tip not included). The place seems fairly new and it is absolutely immaculate. Sam was my barber and he did a great job. This place has a great atmosphere and makes for great conversation and the barbers are more than personable. These guys also seem to always be busy, so just a common sense tip, make sure to call a couple days in advanced. You probably won't get in the same day. There is also only street side parking, and if you know Detroit, you'll know that street side parking will probably be taken so get there early to find a spot somewhere. read more

I had went here a year ago but never wrote a review until I saw it pop back up again. My one haircut I had here the barber was very rude off the start when I told him I was not entirely sure what I wanted done I had a idea but I always kind of look to the barber who is supposed to be good with hair to help me out. He went on with the haircut and it didn't really turn out the way I had wanted it to and during the haircut he had actually cut the back of my neck with a razor and I started to bleed and the barber didn't even think to say anything just went on with the haircut. read more
