I've always had a great experience at Union Barbershop -- it's easy to schedule online, the facility is always clean, and it's easy to find parking in the lot behind the shop. However, the primary reason my experience is always excellent at Union is Tee -- he consistently provides an awesome haircut, great conversation, and makes the process seamless. I've been getting my hair cut by Tee for about 5 years now, and I can confidently say that I'll always trust Tee to give me an excellent cut. I've since moved further away, and my drive to the shop is an hour, but it's worth it to know I'm always going to get the same consistent experience, professionalism, and be able to catch up with Tee. After all this time, Tee knows my preferred style without asking any questions, and also knows how to adapt to however my hair decides to behave on the day of (even when I end up missing a couple weeks and going longer between cuts. I'm from out of town and thought I'd take a chance on Union Barber. Maryo did an amazing job. The shop has a cool classic barber vibe. They offer you a drink when you enter. You can get a straight raiser shave... I did! You can get the hot towel treatment, I did! Maryo also hooked up a nice fade just like a get back home in Cali. Nothing slick, just that old school clippers, shears and straight razor treatment. I'm glad I took the risk. Next time I'm back in town I hope to see Maryo again. I recommend making an appointment. And this isn't the cheap corner barber so you'll pay a few extra bucks, but you get what you pay for. read more

Erin is awesome and always knocks it out of the park with my haircut. I used to see her in Birmingham but don't mind driving a little further for her talent and go conversation. It was an extra bonus when I find out they do waxing inside your nose as well. No more pesky nose hairs. Great location and always loved going to Ferndale but now I have a better reason. The barber was attentive and always making sure the cut was going exactly how it was intended. I will use this place again instead of Detroit Barbershop. And the price is comparable. read more

Bad service and garbage cancellation policy. I booked an appointment for 4:30 pm. Unfortunately, I encountered traffic as on this particular day, Nine Mile was closed due to police activity. Due to traffic and the road closure, I arrived a few minutes late. During this time, I attempted to call Union Barber to inform them that I would be arriving late, however, they put me on hold for over 5 minutes. In the time I was on hold, I ended up navigating my way through traffic and then walked into the barber shop while still on hold. Upon arriving, Union Barber informed me that I was 12 minutes late and that they couldn't fit me in until 2 hours later, as the stylist was assisting someone else-in spite of having an appointment. Unfortunately, that timing would not have worked and I asked if I could not be charged a cancellation fee since I made an earnest attempt to notify them that I was going to be late. They expressed no concern that I attempted to contact them, or for being placed on hold, and simply said that I was liable for the cancellation fee as I didn't cancel within two hours. I tried to explain that I did in fact want a haircut, but the rescheduled time was not workable. I understand why having a cancellation policy exists; as it does waste time if you don't show. However, things happen and it's extremely unprofessional and ridiculous that this establishment does not have a better mechanism in place to notify them if you are late, and that they give away your appointment after a few minutes. Unless you want to be inconvenienced and waste cash, do yourself a favor and visit one of the many other barber shops in Ferndale, or along the Woodward corridor. read more

Scheduled a second appointment for my fiancé with Chris. Appointment was rescheduled with a different barber. I called to inquire and the guy that answered stated that Chris was unavailable. Well...wouldn't you call the client and inform them of this prior to re-booking them with someone else?!?! The guy at Union Barber was luke-warm at best and basically gave an audible shoulder shrug. Disrespectful and extremely poor customer service. We will never make another appointment here. Quality stylists/barbers can only last so long...bad customer service will be the downfall of service based businesses. Went in this past Thursday at 315 to see Chris. He was friendly and I was looking forward to getting a nice haircut. Hoping for $70 that it would be nice. Gave multiple images of what I was looking for. Hair 6-7inches on top, 4-5 inches on the sides and 5-6 inches in the back, all blended together and still long enough so I could brush it all back behind my ears. He was leaving it quite a bit longer than I was looking for in the back, but no big deal. Some things can get lost in translation. I mentioned that it was a bit longer than I want in the back, and he told me he cannot make corrections as he has other clients. Although i have never had someone refuse to make minor corrections to suit the look I'm going for, I know it can be tough with schedules, and I apologized and let him do his thing. I thought, I haven't had this expensive a haircut in a while, let's just assume he knows what he's doing, and maybe this is just how it goes. I was hopeful until he took one of the pieces of hair that I brush behind my ears and proceeds to cut it down to 1 inch in length. Now I know some people like their sideburns trimmed, but I was shocked to see that he thought this appropriate to do without asking me, and when I specifically said I want to be able to brush my hair behind my ears. It was shockingly, hilariously bad. In general the back was longer than I asked for and the top was shorter than I asked for, but adding the random super short sideburns... I drove right over to lady Jane's and paid for them to do a completely different style cut and basically taper the super short sideburns so they blend into the long-ish hair on top. A year of growing down the drain. It's just hair so I'm not that upset. I sadly have a tip before I realized how bad it all was. But I have learned my lesson. More than double the normal price I pay, and I still got one of the oddest and shittiest cuts of my life. read more

Quick quality. They are open on Mondays, which isn't typical for most barbershops. I popped in to clean up before an interview. Being skeptical with kinky hair I didn't expect much but I was delightfully surprised. I was able to walk in without an appointment and also able to connect with the barber that could accommodate my kinky curls and mohawk. It was no hesitation but a confident seating. My barber prepped me professionally, consulted with kindness on my needs and was mindful of my apprehension on trying her out as a barber. The customer service among reception and other staff is pleasant. The decor is fitting but definitely caters to the hipster classic barber lines, wood, products and chairs. It's captivating for an immersed full service experience. It's clean and well maintained with smells that calm. The cost was reasonable. I just had a bad experience with Union Barber in Ferndale. I went in expecting Rasor shave cut bald, but I guess I marked the wrong type of shave on their website when I made my appointment. When I saw bald fade as a choice, it's the one I marked even though I wanted something else. The guy must have said three times how I screwed up and then he says :"well I'll do it this time but next time...." Since you've already made me feel like shit, I'm not sure a next time is something I want to do. He kept saying why didn't I tell him what I wanted. If I thought I made the right choice on the website then why would I need to tell you. And I think he assumed because I'm black that I know what all the different cuts (bald shave, fade cut, etc.) are which I don't. Both cuts cost the same so it was an honest mistake being the second time I've even gotten this type of cut before. I know their time is important and if he didn't have time to do the longer cut, or wasn't comfortable, he should had said and I did ask. He said it was good. My only thought was to get out the chair as soon as I could. I tipped because I've worked in the service industry but I really struggled with it. I had a great experience the only other time I went there which I feel I need to say and why I chose a 3 for my rating. I certainly didn't feel as though I was wasting someone's time. I would like to update my experience with Union Barber. I immediately got a phone call with apologies from the manager. I went back in to talk with the owner and she was very apologetic as well. I recently moved back to the D from San Diego and was looking for a new barber. There is a Floyd's 99 I'm San Diego that I always had good luck with so I went to the one in Birmingham and the lady that cut my hair there didn't do a very good job as she cut my widows peak much too short and it just made my hair look weird. She also didn't shave my sides down to the skin as requested. I ended up waiting a few weeks to try again and decided to check out this barber shop. We've been to this location one other time (walked right in with no appt during a Ferndale festival in the summer). It was fine, but seemed like the girl needed a lot of direction which was weird bc the Bham location just knocks it out. Today I called at 4:45 hoping for a last minute appointment for my little guy who has picture day tomorrow and "luckily" got a 5:45 slot. Walked in at 5:40 and was told the stylist was running behind and would be 5 or 6 minutes past that time, cool no big deal. Now its 6:10 and theyve taken a 6 and a 6:15 appt ahead of us. The one barber that was free seemed to be doing everything to avoid taking us, no thanks. A 25min wait with a 3 year old for a 20min haircut, hard pass. We'll stick to the Birmingham location or try Detroit Barber, bummer because were Ferndale residents and always try to support local businesses. read more

Union Barber is a great place to get a haircut. I followed the person (Maureen, the best) that has been cutting my hair for a few years now. I frequent both Ferndale and Birmingham. Both locations have a great feel and are a great place to get a haircut. They have a good online reservation system so I never have to pick up the phone which I appreciate. Also, I have been here multiple times since they were allowed to reopen after the pandemic closure, including a trip with my 9 year old. They take the Covid safety protocols very seriously.
