The best haircut I have ever had. Sam works meticulously with his tiny scissors. It was like he was cutting one hair at a time to achieve perfection. The price was more than reasonable at only $20. But the greatest thing about going here is Sam himself. I noticed a plaque on the wall about Sam barbering for over 70 years. Huh? Finally I asked: "Sam, how old are you?" The reply was: "94." When we moved downtown (Indian Village) from the northern suburbs 18 years ago, I had a less-than-desirable experience with the shop in Birmingham I'd been going to, and (I) was interested in something downtown. Found Sam at the Barbershop, and have been very happily going to him ever since. Wonderful person, and I've never been anything less than thoroughly pleased with a haircut from Sam - he's become one of the treasures of living & working (now retired) downtown. I'm not overly chatty, but I'm always fascinated by things Sam has seem in over 50 years in the Dime Building - so he's seen the 'great' years, long decline and now rebirth of downtown, & can talk about the personalities that are part of the city's history (Jerome Cavanaugh, etc.). So if you want a great haircut (18+years & I've always been happy) at a very reasonable price, get an appointment here. Imagine my surprise when I strolled from the Levin Courthouse (where I'm working out of) to the Dime Building to check this barber shop out. First, the building is awesome. It is a beautifully maintained classic. Then, Sam's shop is perfect. Ultra clean like polished marble. Sam and I got into a conversation (he's the only barber). He told me he got out of the Korean war and started at the Dime Building in 1954. He's been there ever since. Do the math: that's 57 years at one location! Top notch haircut as well. It took him about 15 minutes to prep, shave, and clean up a beard and 'stache took a month to grow. Amazing service. This boutique-like barber shop in the Chrylser House is the perfect place to go for a polished look. I usually go here for a shave, and Sam charges a measly 10 dollars, I feel like I'm honestly robbing him! He takes his time, makes you feel very comfortable, and really cares about the finished look. Just left Sam's barbershop. Sam was a great guy, but he is NOT a great barber. I just left Sam's barbershop and I lost my beard. I asked him to follow the outline of how it was cut by my previous barber, and he did not. Now, my beard is gone. The line was not sharp. If you are an African American living in downtown Detroit, looking for a good barber, Sam's barbershop is NOT the place to go. After finishing my cut with Sam, I immediately went to another barber to salvage what Sam had destroyed. Now, I have no beard, a bad line, and I'll have to let my hair grow back for weeks before I get another cut. I don't recommend this barbershop. read more

I can honestly say this is the best haircut I've ever gotten. Sam is very pleasant and takes his time. $15 for a haircut and neck shave(not including tip) and he also shaved above my ears and sideburns. He closes at 5:30 and I came in around 5:15-5:20 and Sam was just finishing up another customer. I felt bad coming in at that time, but I needed a haircut badly. I apologized to Sam and he couldn't care less that I got there just before 5:30 and said he would never turn down a customer before closing time and he was as pleasant as could be.
