This is an excellent K-8th grade school in the city of Walnut, but is sad in Rowland school district. The neighbor cities benefit from attending the school. Walnut resident paid large sum of property tax for a school in Walnut to be in Rowland Dist. It is unfair for Walnut resident kids that fall into this school district. Rowland district would not release Walnut resident kids to attend Walnut school dist, but will release other neighbors cities kids to attend Walnut school dist. How unfair for Walnut resident kids. Hello people. I am a student at oswalt that has been here for at least 3 years now and my experience was amazing! I really dont know why this school has so many 1 star reviews like its not that bad but thats their opinion i guess. Our teacher is really fun and likes to joke around a lot. Dispite us being evil and cery distracted students, he still manages to teach most of us really important stuff too. The grass field can be pretty devious after it rains, making students fall (including me) and get sent to the nurses office to ask their parents for new clothes. Overall, I really recommend this epic school if you haven't been here. Trust me, you will have a blast. :D read more

Hi I'm a student here, 5th grade. This school is nice in my opinion, although my classmates like to goof around and are annoying and loud. The bathrooms are (most of the time) clean, the other times they are atrocious. But it's mainly the mens bathroom that are dirty. My teacher is funny and likes to joke around and I don't know how he can contain all of us infernal, abominable, diabolical, and outrageous creatures. Field isn't too shabby, although is yellow with yellow spots. I've seen monsters tackle eachother in the field. Lately, I've been helping out in my son's class, I love his teacher, yay Ms. Batres!! Great, caring, and patient with all her students. Had a chance to meet the new principal, Mr. Garcia, he's very nice and approachable, and has a great sense of humor! The vice principal is very involved with her students and seems to be on a first name basis with all of them, impressive!! It's a clean well maintained school, I always worry if the bathrooms have soap in the dispensers, because I remember growing up, my school never had soap in the bathrooms. To this day, I don't use public restrooms. I ask my son everyday about the soap. The front office staff is sweet and helpful. Every time I come in to help my son's teacher, the ladies in the office always thank me, how sweet is that?? read more

This school is perfectly fine and has amazing behavior expectations but I have a serious problem with the staff. The staff in the office and rude people that disgust me. They are so problematic and always wanna look for a fight just because someone asked a simple question. They wanna make it so difficult for the students just to be at the school and always have something to say. In my opinion, Oswalt should hire better and nice people as staff. These horrible people must have a problem with kids going to Oswalt because as I said, they always have something to say. My daughter used to go to this school and we absolutely loved it and my daughter's teachers was so nice! The school is getting upgrades in the buildings and they look so good right now! The "employees"who are in charge of supervising the children when school is out are extremely inattentive. They face the cars not the pupils who are behind. There is terrible congestion in the area and It appears they are concerned with the flow of traffic rather can concern for the children finding their parents. I have another grandchild in a different district. This particular school is in a residential neighborhood with similar parking conditions as Oswalt yet they manage to deliver the children to your car when you pull up. If the child is not there the parents are allowed to pull over and wait momentarily until the supervisor brings your child to you. This system also provides a twofold safety measure. The concern should be for the children not traffic flow! I believe that Oswalt Academy can develop a system with emphasis on pupil safety. read more

I was an 8th grader at this school and it was awful !!! This school Doesn't care about the junior high at all they don't care about our mental health not even one bit . The aids are awful , the food is disgusting, the phone policy is ridiculous and yeah I might be over dramatic but this school should've never bought the junior high and the elementary together it doesn't prepare us for hs at all since we only have like 6 classes with the same class but just switch teachers they should give us a chance to have different classmates . Hello yelpers! About Oswalt academy.. This is now my daughters 3rd year attending.. With my observations, I believe this school receives more credit than it should.. Let me start off with the faculty.. The "ladies" in the office.. What ever happened to representing yourself professionally? You've got an office manager that brings in her daughter to work.. Wears itty bitty shorts and dyes her hair a bright pinkish/orange and wears dark hooker lipstick.. Looks pretty trashy and tasteless to me.. At LEAST not appropriate for school grounds.. And you have a dress code, but ONLY for the students.. I think it should all be addressed within all faculty as well.. YOU REPRESENT the school! The rest of the other woman in the office have somewhat of an attitude.. And are just plain DUMB! I've read that the previous principal and VP were quite outstanding.. However, with Mr. Despard.. I can NOT state anything really.. I have not had a conversation with him just yet. I must say a big Thankyou to Mrs. Bongiorno. She was my daughters Kindergarten teacher.. She is on point with her teaching abilities.. (It shows through the children's work) Very organized and does her job well! At first you may think she is hard on the children, but then you will realize how much you appreciate the hard work she puts in for your child! She is now a first grade teacher. My daughters 1st grade experience was a JOKE! Ms. Gomez. I honestly feel that the children were robbed the whole year! That teacher is LAZY! Unorganized.. Couldn't even reply to my emails.. And when she responded to one of them, she never even answered my question. During back to school night, there was absolutely NOTHING to show.. Nothing progressed for my child nor the other children.. No homework, no projects, no nothing.. Just sharing this with you all just boils my blood.. Those that have seen Ms. Gomez, her "teaching" is just as equal as to how she looks. The only positive, is that she is nice. Sorry my dear, but nice isn't going to teach my child anything.. and last.. My daughters teacher this year is Ms. Yang.. I've requested for this teacher and fortunately got lucky! Since the incident last year about the poor teachings my daughter had.. I was curious to see what was in store for next year.. So, we decided to pay visit to the other classrooms during back to school night.. I must say that Ms. Yang's classroom truly displayed excellence! I am looking forward to homeworks and projects! And knowing that my child receives the proper education! Overall, I think there needs to be some change.. And parents need to speak up!! P.s. Class of 2001! =] Back in the day, when Dr. Wertz was principal, school life was awesome. He'd remember every kids' names (crazy!) and he'd dress up like Santa in December and give away candy canes. No one messed with Dr. Wertz, he was just fantastic. School lunches were so tasty too! Turkey gravy with mashed potatoes and harvest bread and their weird pizza squares with an inch of cheese and chocolate milk from Driftwood. They even sold ice cream bars, popsicles, and beef jerky for 30-35 cents each back in the day too. Those were the days! I also remember not doing so well academically and was placed in ESL for some years, weird...I ended up finishing Nogales with honors and going to UCD... haha That being said, when my brother started Oswalt 7 years after I left, things changed for the worst. Ms. Ramirez became principal and numerous vice principals came and went. My brother, yes, is a bit bratty and stubborn, but he's a good kid. There was a female bully that was double his size and kept picking on him. But the meanest and dumbest principal (Ms. Ramirez and some Filipino vice principal) figured it was my brother doing all the bullying. They didn't investigate and eventually suspended my brother. WTF! I hated her guts for doing that. It was just drama, drama, drama. (I'm glad to say she's gone! WOOHOO!) Anyway, despite my disappointment with how that situation was handled, the school still strives as one of the best in the area (it's a Rowland Unified School, shocker huh?). Every year, teachers and students get smarter and smarter, it's crazy how brilliant they become after they leave Oswalt. My only other issue with this school is the fact that it's now serving K-8 (my brother was one of the 1st 8th graders). Kids here are pretty sheltered and most of them won't go to Nogales or Rowland High and when they do they feel out of place. Man, do I miss the Dr. Wertz days.... =/ read more

Best Elementary School, EVER!!! c/o '94 I cannot vouch for what it has become today though. Now Oswalt hosts grades K through 8th (crazy huh?). And, it's an ACADEMY NOW!!! It's lierally HARD to get your kid into this school (from what I've heard from friends who work the D.O.). Memories? Great friends, awesome playground, handball, tetherball, monkeybars, running the track, softball tournaments and nice hot lunches (chicken patty, chicken nuggets, rowland burger, turkey and gravy). read more

I am very disappointed with the Districts decision to move toward chromebooks vs keeping the Apple 1 to 1 program for the 5th grade class. When enrolling my child in kindergarten , this was the program I enrolled my child for in this particular school. The school cancelled the Apple one to one program and are moving to chromebooks. The rationale solely deals with cost of the program to move to a cheaper device and program. The district obtained no parent input prior to making this decision and provided no advance notice. The school says the device does not matter it's the learning. But there are limitations to the use of chromebooks that the mac air does not have. With the loss of this program the school will not be able to complete with Walnut and West Covina. It maybe time to move districts next year. read more

This review is strictly regarding the ladies who work in the office. They either all have miserable lives or hate their job. They are unprofessional and would benefit on having some office etiquette. Smile once in a while ladies!! Or get a profession you enjoy. The teachers who run the traffic for pick up are only concerned with getting the line moving. I understand the lines need to move but can you at least let the children get in and put their seat belts on before you start scolding parents to hurry up. Let me first say that the teachers deserve 5 stars because they are absolutely amazing. I am giving the ladies in the office a 1 star rating because they are RUDE and unprofessional. I hope OSWALT finds new staff for their office because they misrepresent what Oswalt stands for. I've been bringing my children to Oswalt for the past few years and every encounter i have over the phone and in person with these women has always left a bad taste in my mouth. strange, i was in the class of '94 as well and i sure as hell don't remember any of these people. i also don't remember learning much of anything other than awkwardly socializing, how to freeze and unfreeze at the sound of bells and whistles, and that i was the world's best four-square player. but, when you're that young, i guess that's what you take away from elementary school. looking back, oswalt seemed like a quality school with quality teachers and faculty. for opinions of its current staff, i guess you'll have to read the blog of some 9 year-old who goes there which, nowadays, shouldn't be too hard to find. yes, the turkey and gravy lunches were spectacular and what i wouldn't do to taste it again. i often wonder if they're still being served. to any parent with a child attending oswalt: please tweet them and ask. and to any 9 year-old blogger who knows that oswalt does indeed still serve turkey and gravy lunches and wants to rub my nose in it: at least i didn't have to wear a uniform, punk. read more

I currently go to this school and the education is great but, the food is terrible and mostly packaged food. Lots of the kids don't eat or force ourself to eat the food because of how hungry we are. They used to sell snacks but the stoped 2-3 years ago. The people that actually enjoy eating inside the school are people who brings their own lunch. Two years ago a few students tried to get the principal to do something about the food many times but he did nothing about it. My dad even send an email because I still have no time in the morning to eat and I didn't want to eat school lunch, so for most days I had to rely on one meal a day and a little snack. Whenever I do eat at the school , I end up having bad stomach aches but still having to continue on with the day. I've been here since kindergarten to eighth and lots of things have changed. With the old principal, when I was in first grade, things were a lot better and the food was good. The students had a lot more fun and people actually liked going to school. As time went by, Mr.Despard changed many of the good things in the school. Now lots, of the old teachers went to a different school or retired. I believe that they should use the money they have, for better and healthier food and school essentials, rather than using it for laptops. The dress codes are unreasonably strict. Most people here have a hard time finding clothes for school. I wish the kids that weren't here in kindergarten ,or before 2010, could see how good the school used to be. Usually you wouldn't want to leave a place that has so many good memories within it, but many students, including me, just want to get out of THIS school and go to high school. With the new P.E. teachers this year for middle schoolers, everything is so unorganized and everyone is confused on what is right and what it wrong. Last year, it took the teachers 10-20 minutes for us to learn how to play the football and we learned more along the way. This year, it takes us 2-3 days just to explain football and it's wasting a lot of the time we could use learning how to do other sports. read more

3 of my kids attended oswalt starting back in 2005. back in 2005 when the principal and vp were mrs. rameriz & mrs. solis everything was ran fine and i never had any issues. the issues started when mr. despard became principal. my daughter had an issue with bullying and nothing was done, he wanted my daughter to be friend the little girl! why would my daughter wasnt to be friend her when the little girl was bullying her? my youngest son's kinder teacher mrs. white is horrible she's very forgetful, she isnt on top of homework, she tells you that you can contact her through email or text but never replies and if she does reply she never has an answer for you she always tells you to look on the school website. i feel like my son was robbed his first year in school because she was a horrible teacher and i wasnt the only parent who felt this way every parent whos child was in her class felt the same way when i brought up my concerns to the principal nothing was done!! my daughter had a sexual harassment incident and this was when i took my kids out of this school. the only thing that they did was have the other student put in counselling and that was it. mr. despard never emailed or called to see how my daughter was doing he never showed any concern or compassion toward the situation. do i recommend this school to anyone no!!!!!!!!!! its horrible the only reason why i kept my kids there was because i was trying to give them the best education and oswalt does have high test scores but thats because thats all they care about they dont care about the students feelings and when situations occur they are not handled properly. there was some good teachers that we loved but that school needs major improvement starting with the principal!!!! read more

This is my kids and our friends school.Before we bought a house in Walnut ,we already heard about how good this school is.It's only last year that we and all of our friends get disappointed because of the kids teacher MISS RITA GOMEZ.She doesn't know how to teach.Their (my kids and friends kids) workbook at the end of the year was almost empty.When my wife and friends went to see their kids work during open house ,most of their work were not nicely done and a lot of the kids table were even empty and not even with their names on.She wasn't even accomodating to most of the parents during the open house.Some of the kids who are falling behind their grades were all excluded from out of school activities even from the end of the year celebration which is in my opinion too harsh and cruel.We all had complain to Ms Anke about this matter and I am not sure if the school will do something about it.Our friends that also have a kids going to 1st grade this school year have requested not to be in her room because of all this complaints.MS Smith and MS OGAWA were very nice teachers to our and friends kids and were not having problems with their grades and were always very accomodating during open house.MS GOMEZ started as being a 4th grade teacher and last year she became a 2nd grade teacher.This year we were told that she will be a 1st grade teacher.WHAT IS GOING ON???IS SHE EVEN QUALIFIED TO BE A TEACHER IN THE FIRST PLACE???Oswalt Academy is a very nice school (5 star)and I believe that MS GOMEZ is ruining it's reputation and giving it a bad name.I hope her atttitude and ways will change so the kids going to this excellent school will have a better future. read more
