Thanks to I Supply Ink, I was able to print out important backups of this year's tax records plus slips to do unfilled 2017, as well as vaccination consent forms for myself and some family members to complete in advance. Yes printers are still important in the real world! It's a tiny walk-in closet sized shop with a few racks holding mostly used & refurbished tech and maybe some special orders. At this time items for service are dropped off at the entrance and you can wait in your car or wander the reassuringly empty concourse. Is this really a 5-star place? Well, YES ...it's literally called "I Supply Ink" and it delivers exactly that and more. A dozen other computer & business services stores I called wouldn't touch printers, many others were totally closed. And the big corporate Wage Subsidy cheats don't have anyone answering their phones ( How the F*CK is one supposed to refill a printer on their website??) Will happily drive to here from Eglinton rather than set foot in the big electronics & business machine chain stores ever again.

It's also a store that I hadn't set foot until this visit. There was lots of parking available. I parked a couple of rows away from the main entrance and walked in. It is a large store. Halloween items were out in full swing, from purple cats, to headbands with bats on them. I went to the sewing section. I didn't see the pair of scissors that I was looking for. In the paper crafting section, I did find a pair of scalloped-cut scissors. I'm not sure whether this pair would cut through the fabric that I had in mind, so I passed on that experiment. I loved being in the sewing section. I am used to a tomato pin cushion. I've never seen a flower one that you wear on your wrist. It's a great idea. Knowing me, I'd be so comfortable wearing it like a watch that I'd go out with it on. I enjoyed checking out the calligraphy section. I'm content with the pens that I currently have, so I didn't pick up anything here. There were plushies near the cashout area. So deadly! I bought an item from the sewing section. I had a woman at the cashout enter my phone number to find me in the system. I paid for my item with a debit card. It was a straightforward, smooth transaction. I passed on getting a plastic bag. I thanked the woman and left the store carrying my small item to my car. I like this store. It didn't have the scissors that I was looking for. It is comparable to other art stores. They have Speedball and Sheaffer calligraphy pens, too. There were also some good storage containers on sale, but I don't need any! The woman cashing me out was nice, despite the wailing child who was at it for five minutes by the time I got to her. I would go back again to explore some more, but this pen should keep me busy for a bit!

However, the most recent trip made me definitely not wanna go back. I walked in to a customer talking to the owner at the checkout counter. I didn't pay much attention to them as my mind was fixed on getting the supplies I needed for my project. The conversation got heated and both parties raised their voices so I stopped to take a look. I saw the owner pointed his hand toward the door and said "out, out!" and she angrily left. When I was done with my shopping and came to the counter to pay, he smiled and said, in his very limited English: "black people, trouble trouble right?" It's bad enough yelling at a customer, it's entirely another level of rudeness to make racist comment to another customer. Am I apparently better than the other lady just because the colour of my skin?

I had to get something printed in black ink and they were actually able to do it on the spot as they had the paper in stock and they were not too busy at the time. After 20 mins I was able to get my printed material. Sweet! I love not having to come back. It was nice of them to offer to print it on the spot for me. I dealt with Eva (the owner) and Margaret who was very nice and got it all done very efficiently. I really love their Stardream/Curious papers. I took the machine to Island Inkjet, located at Sherwood Plaza, a few times. Each time Jeff checked the printer and got it working. After my last cartage change unfortunately it was not printing. Jeff offered valuable advise for a better printer that suited my needs. The new printer worked fine, however I had computer error that affected scanning to the computer. Jeff offered options to get the scanner working, he also offered to change the printer with no cost if it turned out the machine had a problem. I am very satisfied with the service at Island Inkjet Sherwood Plaza. These days with so much scam it is not easy to find people that care. Thank you Jeff for good customer service.

DIY. A friend of mine introduced me to Spicers (formally known as Coast Paper). The address takes you directly to their warehouse. Turns out they supply a lot of printing companies and designers with paper - well here's the source! And they have a Cash and Carry where you can come and and buy it yourself (without the markup). It ended up becoming 70% cheaper. I mean, we're looking at $900 (from a top Toronto designer) to $300 (including printing and paper), where we've designed our own with the help of a friend, and printing at TPH. Assembly was always going to be a group effort anyway. When you first walk in there, the entrance is on the side of where the docks are. Turn left and you're in this room that looks empty. They have pages upon pages of different suppliers and brands. You'll be overwhelmed. I also found the guy a bit curt and intimidating - but turns out he just is high strung and more than willing to help. We flipped through some books, but had no clue, basically just asked him for card stock and white paper for invitations. He's worked with so many designers, that he will give good quality choices at a good price. So my suggestion is to go there with an idea of colour and weight for what you want. Be sure to also ask for samples, he gave me a few sheets for free! We took it back, and after finalizing on numbers, I went back to order the paper (you can also do this on the phone). The paper we got was some nice cardstock coming in 28" x 40" sheets at $1.50 each (compare to some other places at $3 each). We also got some ivory linen (to paste on the inside) for around the same price for a big sheet. They also sell envelopes of different weight and textures. We got a fancy one at $40 for 250. They also will cut for you at a fixed cost $25 and he'll add $5 for each additional type of paper/cut. (We have to cut it down for the printers) Upon my 2nd visit, he was much nicer and joked around that my invitations now have cost me $1.80 each including printing, and that any designer out there will charge about $6 a piece. He has a point. I would recommend going this way for anyone looking for a cheap way to do their invitations and have some sort of design sense.
