Staples store #171. I always have a predilection for patronizing Staples. Staples always bring nostalgia for my high school and college years attaining school supplies. I purchased my journal when I was in college in a Staples. I purchased my leather portfolio for job interview in 1998 at a Staples. In recent years I purchased Parker ballpoint refill pens at a Staples. In more recent years I purchased clear ID badge card holder with resealable zip protector. This Staples #171 sits on 51-10 Broadway, Woodside, Queens, NYC at infinitesimal Woodside Shopping Center which contains a parking lot. It is not easy to locate which is obstructed from view when coming from Northern Boulevard. This Staples location is accessible by MTA NYC Transit local M and R trains at Northern Boulevard subway station. Staff is very curt, dismissive in a negative energy with an indifferent stolid wayward behavioral attitude. Apparently all printer cartridges are placed in aisle and locked behind plexiglass where a Staples associate uses a key for access by request only to prevent the rise of thief for this particular Staples location. Unlike most Staples, printer cartridges are behind the cash wrap area where the cashier pull the requested product and ring at the register. The female cashier called another associate for assistance where it was escorted hand delivered to the cashier to prevent thief. I requested the cashier for "price match" as I did not know how where all my previous visits the cashier was kind and patient to use a handheld scanner to conduct a price match. There was no handheld scanner for this cashier as she called out "who has the scanner?" which fallen into deaf ears. This female cashier was very callous itching to free herself from my presence to do work. Ergophobia to price match? I asked for the WiFi network and access for a quick Google search, which was also acquiescence visible in her rude scowl look weaponized projectile directed at me. "Next time, you do your price match got that?" Price match printer cartridge is actually worth the trouble and time because it lowered the cost. This female cashier has no patience and unable to exhibit any kindness, utter unprofessional. She is unable to hone good communication skills either. Unfortunately, she was the only cashier with utter reluctance to serve me. Oh! Keep that negative energy to yourself woman! As always, I was prepared with my Staples rewards card. I come here to make my Amazon returns, all of which have went smoothly. Occasionally there's been a bit of a line and a wait to do so since this location started offering this service, but it's never been so long that the convenience of returning an item here outweighs the annoyance of the wait, if you know what I mean. If you're used to returning things over at UPS, this spot is leaps and bounds better than what they have going on over there. As for the store portion of this Staples, it's always well stocked and pretty clean. I keep getting these coupons for 15% off a purchase whenever I make an Amazon return, but I work from home and have little need for office supplies, so I haven't shopped the store. It's also convenient that this location has a parking lot. read more

But, I will say, after emailing customer service I received both a call from Fernando, one of the 171 store managers, and Mr Clarke, one of the corporate heads. They have some decent deals but this branch is not efficient. Tons run slow here, very slow. There was a long line and only one cashier. I had sn online order for pick up and it took longer than it should have for pick. They're friendly here but it wasn't easy to find someone except the lady behind the counter. Also I suggest checking your item online and comparing it to the in store price. Many of their items are cheaper online. This staples is the only one in this part of Woodside so I would expect it to be better staffed or supplied. I would say half the time I've gone to pick up basic items- they are either completely out of stock or what they have is not buyable cuz it's opened, or in poor condition. The only other reason why I still frequent this staples is to do Amazon returns but half the time the system is down. I don't know why this store exists if it can't function to sell office supplies or do shipping easily. The only reason why I am giving it 2 stars is that the employees that are there do try to help you but are limited by stock or the computer system. read more

I was in Queens and notice a staples store which made me remember to get a few packs of fax paper and recycle a bunch of used printer cartridges. Many staples are closing left and right and the staples of today is totally different then the staples of years ago as everything you need is only online and stores don't carry as much now compared to the past and the days of different cell phones and companies and the endless amount of computer disks are long gone . The many online discount sites have put a big dent for the need of going to staples and the times have changed and nothing last forever. I'm a regular at this Staples and I have to say that today wasn't great. I was looking for a calculator and I'm not sure if he is the manager as he has helped me many times and is always friendly and helpful just as he was today BUT my experience was with the cashier. She was flat out rude. I handed her the calculator, entered my rewards number and noticed that the calculator rang up to $4 more than I had anticipated. So I asked her if it would be okay for me to step off the line to go check the price of $4.99 that I had seen. She rolled her eyes and shrugged her shoulders. I then went over to check and while the bin said $4.99 and was packed with calculators the fine print has said "tape". I went back and said I didn't read it correctly and smiled. Again she was non expressive and gave me the total. I asked if the 15% coupon would be applied and she said yes but I didn't see it on the customer display screen and she said I don't know what to tell you but I entered it. I then said okay is there a way you can show me? She sucked her teeth, entered in something on the touchscreen turned her screen and showed me. She then repeated my total with dismiss and I said it's okay I won't be buying it today after wall. She repeated my total again and I said it's okay not today and left the store. Staples constantly reminds me of how expensive office supplies can be. They also do a pretty awesome job of demonstrating some lousy customer service too. Because nobody's perfect, I find myself here more often than I want to be. It's not a big Staples by any means and I have learned to call ahead of times for items. Yes, the staff is incredibly slow and is sometimes rude on the phone, but it's much better than showing up to no availability. Check the site and make sure you have the SKU # ready for the product. If that isn't an option, just make sure you know what the product is called in case the staff is confused. Since they're sporting their own parking lot, finding a spot is a breeze. They're also conveniently located close to the Northern Blvd M / R stop. Beware of attempting to price match something from the web, calling ahead to verify this and other questions might save you a lot of headache. read more

OK I'm done... Let's face it, nowadays folks swing by these types of stores for the immediate gratification on walking out with whatever they wanted to get in the first place. Today this Staples Woodside location made confront something dark about myself: I must be a masochist. Why else would I subject myself to utter frustration and anguish if that weren't so? All I wanted was a keyboard case for my munchkin's iPod air. Simple right? While there I remembered that I needed some binder folders and bottled water. A very nice gentleman approached me and asked if he could help. I thought to myself that service is taking a turn in the right direction. I asked him several times if the iPad case I wanted would fit my specific iPad and he said yes. He then asked me to follow him to the far end of the store where he would help me check out. Since I was there I decided to pick-up some bottled water. This is a high margin item for stores. This is why pallets of water tend be placed front and center in main aisles. But I digress. So I brought the water to the counter where the salesperson was checking-out my items, I paid for my stuff. And then it all came to a head. I asked for a large bag for the water. He said that he didn't have any. So I asked what did the store do with all the large box items that they sell? How do customers carry out the stuff? He said that he didn't have any bags at the counter that he brought me to, and that I should ask someone in the front. I said that there was some confusion between our two roles. I reminded him that he was the store employee and that I was the customer and thus it wasn't my role to ask for the bag but rather his role to find me one. So I picked up the water and followed him to the front where he handed me a large bag so that I could bag the water myself. He also offered a second bag. I didn't really want to make a bigger deal that what my annoyance had alrady produced so I just shook my head and I bagged my water. It served me right for stopping by this store again because this wasn't the first time I experienced poor customer service from aloof and disinterested employees. He replied yes and walked off to the printing area. I can see him joking with his friends , and obvious that he wasn't looking for anything. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he'll go after. He then proceeded with another customer.. I'm still standing there in the front looking like an idiot. There's only so much patience a man can have. The employee helping me had to stay in the front, so I don't place any blame on her. She asked him multiple times if he checked and he just gave her the answer No we don't have the item in stock. Were my ears finally delivered from the naked exposure to the ramblings, preachings and bayou/mariachi musical interlopers on my daily commute? I opened the little box like a boy on his birthday, when suddenly I was struck with the biggest and heaviest blow hope can have: Disappointment. They had in fact replaced my Sony MP3 player, but instead of sending me an exact replica of my BLACK USB thingy, they sent me a horrible WHITE one... utter, and bitter disappointment. It was unacceptable under any and all standards. But I was through with Sony; I decided that the best course of action was to surrender myself to Staples customer service. Sony would be dealt with soon enough. Once again I found myself stepping out of the R on 34th St. to the little Staples; once again I had to explain everything (the manager apparently had been changed) "Wait one minute, let me go check in the back" -the Manager said, disappearing into an aisle..... after 10 min, he was back, but what he held in his hand vexed me to no end. Indeed it was a black Sony mp3 player, but NOT a USB lipstick, but an iPod like MP3 thing.... Didn't he understand? Wasn't it obvious? I wanted a USB/MP3 combination that was SMALL; the size of my friggin index finger not my palm!! Grrr... I summoned patience and explained, lazily he went off and came back again with an answer: "I'm sorry we don't have anymore of these in black; you can go to the Staples in Queens or Maspeth; they have one" "Queens or Maspeth?.... can you be more specific?" -I said. He gave me the addresses of the two stores that purportedly had the thing in stock, so once again I took the R, this time Queens bound to Northern Blvd. Now this was a Staples worthy of suburbian legend; roadside, next to a McDonalds drive-in, HUGE in size; for a minute I doubted that I was in New York at all. I walked in and saw that in contrast with smaller Staple stores in Manhattan, this one had the luxury of displaying items that you could normally order through catalog; so there were racks with Storage Cabinets, Office furniture, Bookcases and other items to furnish your home or business. I approached customer service, and once again, I explained to them my debacle. But the store manager at Staples 34th St. had sent me on a wild goose chase; they did not carry my coveted black Sony MP3 player. I could not hide a face of dejection, the rep at customer service named Sabrina noticed this, and decided to join me in my crusade for the dark mp3 horse. First she leveled and told me I had a crucial problem; I needed an Staples invoice in order to reclaim my item, since the Sony replacement was not itemized in the Staples data. I shuddered just to think I had to go back to fetch the invoice, when she said that was not necessary. She was there to help. Asking me for my credit card, she swiped it in a machine and told me they had installed a new system just a few days ago that allowed for them to track a transaction anywhere along the Staples system, enabling them to print a receipt for the customer. She did. Receipt in hand, she then took the liberty of not only finding the REAL Staples that carried the very last black version of my player, but calling the store to explain my situation beforehand, and even telling them to hold the door for me; I was on my way (they closed at 9, it was 8:30pm) !! I couldn't thank her enough. Now that's what I call outstanding customer service. "Staples Astoria is just 20 blocks down the road" -she had said. No time to cab it, no time for Subway, let's try and make a walk for it. I tried, but upon arriving 20 blocks down there was no Staples to be found and it was 8:58pm... I tried asking for it, looking for it to no avail. I knew I would have to come the next day thanks to my tried and trusted sense of geographical orientation; but at least I knew that this white MP3 abomination would never upset the color program I envisioned worthy of my musical wanderings. "No, I don't want a protection plan for the fax machine I'm buying!" I had to say that to the woman who I was buying from seriously FIVE TIMES! I know they probably get commission from selling protection plans to people, but give me a break! I DON'T NEED IT. I'm buying a $130 fax machine, and it really isn't worth it to buy a protection plan for it. Also whenever I come here (which has been 3 times in the past 2 1/2 months) they are always low (or out of) what I need, and whatever IS left is usually in rough shape! The carted out the box from the back, since it's obviously a heavy load, and instead of offering to help me out to the car they let me carry it out. The place is diving IMO. I had a pretty stupid experience today at the Copy Center. Stupid on their part. I went to have many documents printed from my USB. The person running the copy center (SABRI was his name, I'm 90% sure) was alone and trying his best. He seemed pretty knowledgable on how to run the copy center services. However, when I protested how long I stood there waiting (1 hour people, 1 freaking hour), SABRI and his co-worker (some Spanish looking teenage kid in a black shirt) proceeded to tell me they had done me a so called "favor" by printing everything that very day. They claim there is a "big handbook" that prohibits same day printing. Well guess what SABRI, I NEVER asked you to print my documents that very same day. In fact, I asked you multiple times when I could come back to pick them up but you NEVER answered my question. You broke that supposed "handbook rule" on your own kid! Don't expect credit for a "favor" I never asked for. Who wants to stand for an hour in Staples? Further, the skinny Spanish-looking kid defended his copy center homie SABRI by telling me how he has worked since 9am (it was not about 5pm). Um, I don't care. Do you care about my 12 hour work days and how I don't have time to stand in Staples for an hour? No, you don't. I sympathize with long shifts but at the end of the day you're there to work right? It is not my problem if you've been working since 8am the previous day. Lastly, it was very frustrating to see my printing job stop half way because the teenage Spanish-looking kid had frozen the computer screen while trying to set up a job for a friend (who SABRI claims is a customer as well). He also kept distracting SABRI from running the copy center with questions and chit-chat. Not only did SABRI decide to print my documents while I'm standing there (breaking your now famous fat-handbook-rule on your own), but your co-worker now proceeds to pause my printing job while you both attempt to complete an order for an affiliate of a Staples employee. That's not customer service kiddos. You kids need to get off your high-horses and work on your lack of communication with customers. Don't expect credit where credit isn't do. Nice location, generally well maintained and organized. I've been living in the area for many years and this is the best version I've seen of this location yet. You can't beat the convenience of this location, super close to either subway stop on the M, R line Northern Boulevard or 46th Street. I usually come here to ship packages and every time it is very busy so expect a little bit of a wait. However, on the plus side they have a self-service station that you can do most of the work yourself to move it along. They definitely need more staff for the copying/shipping desk since they are always swamped. Despite that, the employees are always helpful and attentive as possible considering they are being pulled in 3 different ways at the same time. I truly appreciate the hard work of the employees here, it shows. read more

Bought Intel desktop computer. I have wireless hotspot only. Realtek wireless driver keeps disappearing. Brought in for tech to look at. Loaded Realtek via wired internet. Paid $29. Happened again. I was told to reset which works, but I lose my settings. I was told next time bring it in and there are 6 steps to reload Realtek without reset or internet. I brought it in with this explanation. He said OK. He did not show me 6 steps but hooked it up to the internet by wire and loaded Realtek. I told him when I brought it in that the 6 step Realtek reload was why I brought it in. He did not do that nor told me that he could not and insisted I pay $29. I told him he did not do what I asked for. He insisted I pay $29. He also told me that he is aware that this particular computer does this. I was not told this when I bought it. He has no answer other than it has to do with how the Realtek driver is hooked up with the motherboard. The problem is mine to solve with the manufacturer. read more
