The building features a steel frame, terra cotta skin, three-part vertical division and banks of "Chicago windows." It incorporates classical decorative elements in the cornice and the window details It is marker number L1376 and it was erected in 1989 by the Bureau of History, Michigan Department of State. The most beautiful, historic gem! Located right on the Detroit River, this place is used for an…read moreevent space, for the rowing teams to practice, and much more. I came here for Yelp's Nauti by Nature party and had SO much fun. This space was perfect to host it, with grand balconies, an amazing view, and interesting spaces. This boat house has been flooded multiple times, and they're currently working on restoring it, room by room. Our event was a fundraiser for the building, in an effort to return it to its previous grandeur. Currently, it's still beautiful and majestic, just dated and in need of some repairs. Such a cool, unique spot for an event!

The Penobscot building is a historical, gorgeous building located on Griswold. It's been around…read moresince 1905. It houses the Caucus Club, one of the last of Detroit's 40's-esque restaurants. I have an adoration for historical buildings -- all the stories and characters they contain, which is why I wanted to peek into the Penobscot. The interior has gold and marble detailings. The lobbies also have beautiful detailings and artwork that have been preserved. Today, in the building you'll find a post office, a nail salon, clothing boutiques, an apothecary, a place that sells fine wines -- definitely worth a browse. The…read moremonument, which stands in Hart Plaza, shows Cadillac just after he arrived in 1701 and founded Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit, the community that would eventually become Detroit. Cadillac, who was born in France as Antoine Laumet, took on his aristocratic name and title after coming to North America. His position as an adventurer and explorer is depicted in the statue, which also represents the city's European beginnings and strategic significance in the fur trade and colonial growth. Along with other adjacent plaques and memorials honoring the Cadillac Convoy. This group of French-Canadians, soldiers, and clergy who accompanied Cadillac to create the settlement. Despite being hailed as a valiant pioneer, Cadillac's legacy has grown more nuanced over time as historians have reexamined his intentions and deeds, particularly his contentious alcohol and land speculating ventures. Nevertheless, the statue continues to serve as a focal point for civic memory, honoring the diverse forces that molded Detroit's establishment and tying the city's identity to its 18th-century origins. Antoine de Lamothe Cadillac (March 5, 1658 - October 16, 1730), born Antoine Laumet, was a French…read moreexplorer and adventurer in New France, which stretched from Eastern Canada to Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico. This statue of Antoine Laumet itself was dedicated July 24, 2001, in commemoration of the tricentennial of his arrival sculptors: William Kieffer and Ann Feeley. And it serves as a tribute to his contributions to the development of Detroit and the surrounding area. The car brand Cadillac was named after Antoine, and its headquarters was in the city of Detroit, where Cadillac himself explored. Philip A. Hart Plaza, where this statue sits is believed to be where Antoine Laumet landed and found in 1701, when it was known as Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit which became the city of Detroit. The area itself became the main source of communication and transportation to the outside world until the inventions of the railroad and telegraph. Hart Plaza is always a must visit for me whenever I visit the city of Detroit for mostly the Detroit Free Press Marathon. I always anticipate finishing up at Huntington Place for the expo, just so I can tour the area and visit the Monument to Joe Louis, and Spirit of Detroit. Along with viewing this statue, you can also get a glimpse of Canada from a far the closer you get towards the riverfront. Other sights within Hart Plaza are the Detroit Princess, the Horace E. Dodge and Son Memorial Fountain, and the Gateway to Freedom International Memorial to the Underground Railroad. During my visits, I always park at Huntington Place, being that it is where the expo is located for the Detroit Marathon. It is an affordable parking option in my opinion with no hourly limit. However, if you have interest in other parking options, there are plenty in the area which may also be cheaper than Huntington Place. If you happen to be in the area of Hart Plaza while visiting the city of Detroit, I recommend looking out for Antoine de Lamothe Cadillac Statue. ~Blessings~ Thomas G

This marker stands in front of an interesting home in the Grosse Point Park neighborhood on a…read moresomewhat busy street. There are sidewalks and a bicycle lane so there's room for you to stop and read the sign. I found it interesting to learn some of the settlement history of the area as well as reading about a dedicated educator. The house itself is an English Tudor style constructed of brick with a slate roof. It is quite lovely to look at and is in excellent condition on the exterior. The ivy along one wall is absolutely impressive. On the front, "William Voigt, Jr. is thought to have designed this house as a summer home in the early 1900s. In 1889 his parents, who ran a butchering business, purchased the property for $1,850. French settler Joseph Tremble was granted the land by President James Madison in 1811. Paul Trombley later had title to the site. Voigt, Jr., a city engineer, owned The Home Brewing Co., and had studied architecture in Germany. As a member of the Detroit Board of Education, 1887-1893, he was instrumental in strengthening the compulsory education law and introducing physical culture into school programs. Voigt's sister, Christine and her husband Herman Kreit, D.D.S. were deeded the home in 1907. Dr. Kreit became a trustee and president of the Village of Grosse Pointe Park. Christine taught German and science at the Liggett School from 1882 to 1900. The home remained in the family until 1969." And on the rear, "As a member of the Detroit Board of Education from 1887 to 1893, William Voigt Jr. supported compulsory education laws and advocated providing free text books for students. Serving as president of the board in 1889 he defended the cost of public education in his annual report: "While the estimates asked by the Board of Education are undoubtedly large sums, and should be expended by the body with the utmost care and scrutiny, still... there is no purpose for which money should be so willingly given by the taxpayer as for our public schools, the one, of all our American institutions, which is the very foundation and base of the structure of our form of government... American patriotism can well be measured by the love for our public schools."" The marker was erected in 1982 by the Michigan History Division of the Department of State. It is marker L923. During our week of training at the Dearborn Inn, our organization scheduled Thursday night's dinner…read moreat the Henry Ford Estate (Fair Lane / Home of Clara & Henry Ford). As a novice of woodworking, I was blown-away by the intricate woodwork and finishings throughout the home. The three ladies that lead our tour of the home shared many interesting details about the property, its restoration, and details of Clara and Henry's years at the estate. Many of the restoration stories, like finding a tub for Henry's bathroom or how Clara had a section repainted white were intriguing. Even though much of the home, especially the second floor, is still being restored it was a fascinating experience.

There wasn't much actually open amongst the majestic-looking buildings while I was there, but the picnic area was hopping. The signage was bilingual-in English and Arabic-and what appeared to be a Yemeni wedding seemed to be taking place. The juxtaposition of the estate of an industrialist (or robber baron, or visionary, or racist, depending on your point of view) with a distinctive immigrant community makes for a striking reflection on Americana. The grounds include some gardens, and a lake with a path around it. Access to the river is limited, but it didn't look like that impressive of a river. The greenery is more worthwhile.

To begin, this review is only for the outside grounds around the Civic Center and all that is…read moreoffered to both see and do. We're very familiar with the main library adjacent to the Clinton Township Civic Center, but we never explored the outdoor areas right around here. We began with a scenic walk around the grounds on a nicely paved path which has pretty wildflowers along with a tree lined pathway that winds around the perimeter of the grounds. On your walk, you'll see the very nice, fenced in dog park along with the popular winter sledding hill in the far back of the property. The Senior Center is adjacent to both the pathway and dog park so everything is well condensed whether you are walking the trail, taking your pet for exercise or enjoying winter on the sledding hill. By the way, when passing by the Senior Center, take a moment to look at the beautiful Senior Adult Life Center Garden Of Life. It's worth the few extra moments to take it all in. From pretty flowers to the vegetables where 80% are harvested for donation to local charities, it's a very nice area to pause and take it all in. In the front of the Civic Center is a war memorial dedicated to those brave men and women who fought for our freedom. You'll also find a memorial plaque dedicated to those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attack. Next to these memorial tributes is a pretty stone walkway leading to a beautiful fountain with stone seats to sit and reflect if you so wish. With plenty of parking for the Civic Center offices, Senior Center and all of the activities, it's always easy to find a parking spot. One more thing to mention for the Civic Center building, the drop off ballot box is located right in front of the building for drive up easy access. There's also an area nearby the Civic Center with picnic tables closer to the front of the grounds where outdoor gatherings can take place along with a playground for the kiddos. There's a little lake with a pretty fountain where fishing is allowed as long as you catch and release. Areas dedicated to sports can also be found on the grounds near the Civic Center. From soccer fields for the younger groups to a full size field for adults, to pickle ball and baseball, this area has every age in mind when it comes to activities. If you choose a longer walk, this area also lets you connect to the Clinton Township Tomlinson Arboretum trail, which is another nice walking path across the road from the main library. So as you can see, there's plenty to do and see. I was pleasantly surprised as to all this area has to offer.
