I reached out to Star elevator to service our elevator in a 3 unite building in SF. They were AMAZING. They set up an appointment to come out. Andy showed me the workings of the elevator and explained in detail the condition of our elevator. He also gave me the history of the family owned company. Their contract price was excellent and they service the elevators monthly. I switched from Thyssen to Star Elevator for maintenance of a 3 stop elevator in a Class-A office building in downtown Los Altos. Because the elevator was nearly 50 years old and having operational issues and difficulty finding parts, I contracted with them for a full Elevator Modernization--basically all new pumps, wires, controls, mechanical and computer parts, and the drilling and installation of a new hydraulic jack. Because the elevator was down, they expedited the design, manufacturing, scheduling and approval process and were able to shorten it by several months. Once everything was ready, the process took 5 weeks start to finish. They handled coordination with the drilling and pit sealing companies, as well as the electrical/life-safety contractor. The on-site crew (Javier and David) were professional, respectful of tenants, communicated well and did excellent work. Early on the office provided daily updates & photos, along with scheduled activities for the upcoming days. We passed on the very first inspection and were back in service. As a commercial and multi-family property manager, I highly recommend them. read more

The other one star review by Marc is spot on because I had exactly the same type of service - LOUSY!!! Star's website states the following: "When your elevator is out of service, it's urgent. We get that. Our field and office teams work together to provide you with a prompt, accurate proposal. If your repair is covered under maintenance, we facilitate and expedite the repair as soon as possible." Well, my building's elevator was down and a contract was signed in January 2019 to fix it and it was finally fixed today (March 5, 2019) after delay after delay and no shows on several promised dates. When an elevator is down it IS an urgent situation but Star apparently does not realize that based on the service I got and despite what their ads say. Promptness also went out the window as they did not show up on the days I was told they would be there. My advice to all is find another company if you need fast and prompt service without delays. read more

"Not through" My building uses Star Elevator to maintain our building-original pos elevator. Recently they had the elevator out for 2 weeks, restrung the cable and did other repairs. Now, 2 months later, the elevator motor caught fire and the elevator is out of service... for the foreseeable future. Normally I would hold them harmless for incidents like these, but given the recent, and lengthy service (where they didnt appear to be doing any work, I later learned they had taken parts back to repair/fabricate), one would think that such a major problem (motor so worn/broken it caught fire) would have been caught previously. This building has many older residents who find the stairs difficult. The building manager (who is a great guy!) has been doing errands, laundry, carrying things for them. read more

If I could give these guys a 1 I would. Stay away from them, they are poorly managed and don't care for their customers. They don't plan, they flat out lie to you to get you off the phone and they don't care. They told us the job would be done in 5 days and now we don't know when it would be back online. We have older residents living in the building and they are trapped not knowing when the unit will be back online. read more

Absolutely terrible company. I'm part of an organization with an elevator in the building, and became a trustee over a year ago. Star was charging us for monthly maintenance, but there was no evidence that any work was actually performed. When the Napa earthquake happened our elevator was damaged. They did send a technician out to check the damage, and a followup the next day to get an estimate on the repair. They sent us an invoice for four hours labor, over $1200.00 for the repair estimate. The only work that was done was to shut off the system. We decided to continue with the repairs, but could never get any of the sales people to call us back to schedule. They did call us about the inspection bill, and when I complained about no response and no work started, I was told I would get a call "later". No call ever... Do not use this company. We found another local company and the repair estimate came in at half what Star quoted. read more

Called many times for service. If you don't open an account with them, you are not their priority and it could take months to fix your elevator. After they fixed it, it broke again 3 days later. Needa pay another $300+ after $300+. Will definitely not recommend to anyone. ESR elevator, INC has excellent service. Called them, came next day to check and came the next day to fix it. Star Elevator just finished a full modernization of our elevator in our older Union Square building. Awesome company to deal with. Project started in Oct 2020 and finished on-time ( even during Covid ), within budget, and with minimal change orders. Star Elevator was responsive and easy to coordinate with. We wanted a medium-sized local company for our building and Star Elevator was the perfect choice. I've been in the property management business for over 30 years in downtown SF and always value being able to pick up the phone and communicate directly with the techs, superintendents, and sales reps. The Condo HOA that I manage, Diamond Heights Village Association, has 8 elevator systems that were built in 1972. All of the elevators are used frequently by residents and their guests. I have worked with Star for about two years. Their office staff is courteous, professional and helpful and their mechanics are experts that get the job done! Response time for requests to repair a cab during business hours and after-hours has been immediate. They have done everything from major equipment upgrades to helping trapped residents during power outages. State Inspectors will always find something to write-up. Fortunately, Star takes care of needed repairs and paperwork so that the association complies with the State's requirements and deadline. Horrendously, atrocious lack of service. They have been charging our building for years for shoddy or nonexistant "monthly maintenance calls". After countless futile attempts to ascertain that they were in fact performing the monthly oiling maintenance we were paying over $250 per month for, we finally got rid of them. Years of paying for this company (since 1991) and they would charge us for visits when no one saw them come by. Invoices for dates inconsistent with any visits. Dishonest, disreputable company. I'm not sure why our property manager allowed for this to persist for so long. After less than a year after taking over on the Board, I finally had enough of the excuses for no-shows. read more

I had been doing business with Metropolitan Elevator for 30+ years. Several years ago they merged with Star Elevator, That is when the trouble started, I started having problems with the elevator in my apartment building like the car not leveling which required a number of service calls and a suggestion that I switch from a water based elevator to oil at a cost of over $40,000. I declined. Then Star said that the elevator needed a new valve at a cost of about $6000 which was not warrantied. I agreed and after several months of being out of service allegedly the valve was supposedly installed, but stopped working almost immediately. I was then presented with a contract for about $4000 to do it again. I agreed and the elevator still was not functioning and Star shut it down and installed a lock on my elevator room and again said I had to switch to an oil based elevator. At this point, I was very suspicious about Star and called another company to come out and take a look. After cutting off Star's lock, the new company (Northern Elevator) had the elevator up and running in about 1/2 hour by merely cleaning the valve and suggested that there never was a need for a new valve in the first place. I promptly hired Northern to be the service company and I haven't had a service call (other than the regular monthly inspection) since I hired them. My tenants (some of which are elderly and disabled) were without service a total of 3 months in one year while Star was on the job of sending out contracts and invoices. and not fixing the elevator read more

I rarely write reviews for services; however, the professional and " bending over backward" effort that Star Elevator made on my family's behalf warrants it. I am an owner of a 100 unit building in the SF with a passenger and freight elevator as well as having an antiquated elevator in my parent's home. Star has serviced all of our elevators off and on for many years, always being very personal and open to our needs. At the beginning of this week, my parent's elevator broke down. They are in their 80's, wheelchair-bound and live in a large 2 story home. This was a crisis. Since the elevator is almost as old as the house (1920's); parts were non-existent! After an initial scramble calling all over the Bay Area, Star Elevator repair decided to have the motor re-built. They overnighted the parts needed back East, had the machine shop work on it overnight and we were up and running within a few days. I cannot express my sincere gratitude to the ownership down to the servicemen for their patience, persistence, professionalism and "herculean" effort to get the job done. I have a family run property management company and we have worked with Star Elevator for over 10 years. They service about a dozen elevators in buildings we manage around San Francisco. There is something special about a family run business like Star Elevator. We have worked with many elevator companies over the years, but Star is really the best. Not only are their service techs great, but if there is ever a problem, the owner of the company gets involved to make sure that everyone is satisfied.
