What a GREAT place to volunteer. I volunteered here as part of my HR Houston group. We set up, served and cleaned up after lunch service. I had no idea just HOW MUCH the Star Of Hope does for women and children. Free housing, free clothing, free meals, free on-site daycare, and free programs to get them back on their feet! Just one visit and tour will leave you knowing that this is a place to give more of your time and possessions. Vanessa was our coordinator and helped us (led us) during our time there. Discrimination. They only help black women. Dark skinned women specifically. Everyone else they turn away. Don't believe me go look at who all is there. You will occasionally see another race or skin tone. Look all the reviews on here, nothing but dark skinned women leaving 4-5 star reviews, why? Because they are the ones they will help. If you are light skinned, mixed, latina etc they turn you away. The black women who work there will roll their eyes, make comments about you and look you up and down as soon as you walk in the building trying to get help. They do not care about them kids you have with you. They make their decision based off of how they feel about YOU. The parent. I was only there about 30 mins and I experienced hearing the front desk lady and the female security guard talking mess and gossiping about the people coming in and or standing outside with their children. They have terrible attitudes and do not need to be working at a shelter. The women who do intake as well. That sit behind the glass. Rolling their eyes and making faces while you are in the waiting area. One black lady rolled her eyes because my daughter went and asked her for a pen. This place NEVER has any room. They turn down everyone, everyday all day. Unless they feel like accepting you based off your looks, skin tone and race. The place needs a lot of these employees replaced ASAP. Do not waste your time coming here. They will turn you away, give you a paper to use to call other places and have you sitting outside with your kids. Not a care in the world. Freezing, hungry .. they will clock out and walk right passed you and your children. Tell you, you can't sit outside their building, you need to move somewhere and go right on home. I was just here reading reviews, The Star of Hope is one of the best things God directed me to. It was motivational, inspiring and exactly what I need at the time-DISCIPLINE. When I completed my program I had all the tools I needed to start a successful God fearing life-self esteem, self sufficiency, glasses, dental just to name a few. I have been able to maintain staying clean of drugs, employment, automobiles and my own place. Star of Hope - Homeless Shelters Near Me - Houston, Texas

I was at Star Of Hope for only 5 days and during this time I was 1) treated like a criminal 2) spoken to extremely rudely and 3) made to go to church services 3 times a day. On the fifth day, it was discovered that my ID badge had not been scanned for two days at roll call (even though I had shown up for every roll call) and was unceremoniously thrown out. After I was expelled, I was on the street in 100° weather to the point where I went to the hospital for heat exhaustion. An altogether horrible experience and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. read more

DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY TO THIS PLACE! VOLUNTEER ELSEWHERE! They do not deserve your hard-earned money or time. The people that work here are the rudest, most horrible people I have ever encountered. I just went to drop something off to my mom there, and I was accosted. I only wanted to ask a question. I had never been there before. I didn't know what was going on. There is no helpful signage around telling anyone where they might go. Obviously, I'm walking in there lost, confused, and no one wants to be visiting their family member at an addiction treatment place. It sucks in general. To try and find out what I needed to do and be spoken to extremely rudely with absolutely no grace or compassion was shocking. I have literally never walked in somewhere looking for help and been treated so poorly. And this included a psychiatrist on staff who would not even let me say one word. A medical professional treating a patient's family that way is just unacceptable. Maybe if they would have listened and let me explain instead of just attacking me, we could have worked it out, but they were so incredibly rude from the second I walked in. I don't know if they just judged me based on my appearance or what. I sobbed the whole way home and wasn't even able to give my mom her stuff. Jessie Smith needs to get a handle on his supervisees because they are acting horrendously. I will update with the names of the specfic employees (female desk attendant and female security guard working at 1 pm on 6/28/25) and psychiatrist as soon as I get them. Also, the rude security guard's boss was standing there and did absolutely nothing. Super helpful. Disgusting behavior from a place that is supposed to help people and a medical doctor. Star of hope discriminates against the mentally ill. I have a psych history and have been in recovery for 5 years......thanks to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I went to star if hope for help and to get on my feet escaping my abusive mother. After a week of being there they informed me that I was screened wrong and was not supposed to be there because they don't except people with a psych history. I said "so people with mental illness should stay on the street in the elements with no food or water?" They had no response. They call themselves a Christian organization but they exclude the mentally ill. That's not what Jesus taught at all!!! I was there a totally of 2 weeks and was put out 1 day after another woman was put out because she looked "manic". I was discriminated against by an organization that claims to be built on the love of Christ. Don't go it's like a prison. read more

As a lifelong resident of Houston, I have heard nothing but horror stories about Star of Hope since I came to be an adult, and the reviews here just add to the many others from people I have met and spoken to face to face. Do not give them money and BEWARE, it's tragic that the homeless don't have better options in Houston. We have a real shelter shortage. read more

fell on hard times me and my kids and ended up at this place only to realize you can't bring anything in,no food drinks snacks or anything.the food they cook is horrible we have lost weight since being here..you can't have your phones outside of your room and can't where what you want...you have to pay 300 for a room and 50% to put into there savings..they also try to force religion upon you and get mad at you when they feel as if your not taking it in...mind you I'm spiritual not religious and upon coming in they made me throw my crystals and all that away talking about it was witchcraft and on top of that they separated me and my oldest daughters and we could not have contact with one another or go to each other's room plus I could not take my grand baby or even watch her if I wanted to..this place is hell and low vibrational they definitely treat you like it's a prison and it started to badly take a toll on my mental and spirit but I rise above it..the folks there are mean the ones that work there and the residents and it will definitely drain your spirit...star of hope is not what you think and I would not advise any one to go unless you know how to stick it out cause they also put you out for anything. read more

This facility is terrible stay away, I was living there May 30 to June 30 2024, while living there , they force you to go too church 3times a day except for weekends. During my stay I was messed with while sleeping, and needled in my sleep. It's a gay establishment. some prechers have gospel wanting you to become gay saying it's ok. They spit in your food making you sick. They want you to join a program for 3 to 7months with no phone use and you can't get a job. Stay away from this place. read more

HOMELESS and DONORS BEWARE!! This shelter is not treating people with the love of Christ and dignity, they cause the working homeless to lose income due to missing work for Star of Hope program classes, instead of protecting the women, the security treats the residents like criminals, and the case managers kick women out (not for being bad residents, but because they don't give some of your child tax credit to the savings account even if you don't receive the tax credit check). Lastly, the housing assistance department is not fulfilling their mission to help families get housing to aid in ending homelessness. How do I know all this? I am not only a former donor, but I'm also a former resident. Even though some may try to dismiss us, God hears our cry. Please, look elsewhere for shelter. Donors, please also look somewhere else to give your resources as well. In spite of Star of Hope's disappointment in our lives, my kids and I are trusting God for a home hopefully by the holidays. I came to the Star of Hope after losing my job and l lost everything I owned. I'd never been arrested, didn't do drugs, was only a social drinker. I had high hopes for being place in the Transitional Living program to learn new skills and get a better job than the one I had before. But instead I was put in a different program and treated like a criminal. I wasn't allowed to have visitors or talk to my family and my phone was taken away when I got there. We were forced to sit in a freezing cold room all day transcribing books. It was more like a prison then a Christian based organization. No, I don't recommend this place to anyone. read more

Beware of this place as they treat you like trash. The food makes you sick, the security guards try to have sex with the residents, the staff looks down on everyone, the rules are ever evolving and contradicting one another, the fights and the fact that they shove Christianity down your throat like the LAW and are intolerant to any other faiths one may have. Save yourself the stress. Also plan on spending 3-4 months inside before you are able to go look for a job. You are required to do their classes no matter the subject it all involves shoving religion into your brain yet they do not practice what they preach. We are being treated badly here they made me sick to my stomach and i feel like they posion me. The beds are horrible NOT good for old people and pregnant people.
