I'm so impressed with this animal shelter and how well it is run and loved by the community. We…read morestopped this weekend to drop-off a bit of everything on their wishlist. I was surprised to see so many other cars in the parking lot. There was another family dropping off donations, and a family who was picking-up a new member of their family, a well cared for dog. There were also three teens who were cleaning the cat kennels in a separate room. The main room is open where there is a couch, fireplace, laundry room and office with cat kennels and four large, dog kennels surrounding the room. The animals all looked relaxed - the small to medium size dogs were excited, the kittens were play fighting and adult cats were either sleeping or chilling. There was also another room that housed 8 large dogs, and they all had a nice, cozy place to sleep, plenty of room to walk around and fresh food and water. On each cage, there were notes about the dogs, like "hard toys only", "keep in kennel, jumped over cage", etc. The third room housed more cats. It was small, and the smell was a bit over-powering, but the teens were busy cleaning each cage. The cats looked content and cared for. The entire facility is clean and well maintained. There are also kennels outside with tarps covering the tops to protect the dogs from sun and rain when they are let outside while their kennels are being cleaned. From the extra blankets, netting, fencing and wood boards, the care-givers have gone out of their way to keep the dogs from being able to escape or take nips at each other which I image happens when dogs get bored or playful. They all had several toys in their kennels too, as did all the cats. The volunteers at the shelter are very friendly, the board member present gave us a tour, answered all our questions, allowed us to wander the facility freely, and let us adore the animals at our leisure. I admired their system for organizing the food by expiration dates and mixing them to prevent the dogs from getting used to one and getting sick, if introduced to something different. They also have a system for letting the cats out of their cages to play and enjoy the room either during the day or night. From the amount of good sized kennels, towels, blankets, litter boxes, cat beds, toys and food, the community does its part in chipping in to keep this place going strong. They have a website and facebook profile. The VP on the board who was there that day was very gracious, welcoming, extremely nice and personable and could not thank us enough for our donations. It was also nice to learn that the members of the board are experienced animal rescuers and professionals in the community. We look forwards to working with them in the future.

I would have never gone the route she suggested (younger, male cat) but thank goodness I listened to her. he is my sons best friend. cat adopted was a black male cat named forrest at the time- if the shelter wants to look into who helped me and give her a raise :)

It stated that the Porter County Animal Shelter uses "security cleaner" which is infact NOT FDA approved or certified. It is DEATHLY to animals and can cause many problems. The managers have no regards for these poor animals. To me, it seems like they just want the money.

I adopted 2 domestic black cats: Leo & Midnight. They came as a pair. Midnight, is female, sits on the top of the living room chair watching out the window. Friendly, lovable, meows for me to pet her; such a stress reliever. Leo, the male, is shy. He will spend most of his time downstairs. The cats are quiet, clean, low-maintenance for the life I live. The animal control personal were very professional. The animals were shown care. I appreciated the genuine attitude the building and staff showed. If interested in a pet give a sheltered animal a chance because animals adopted from shelters typically cost less than ones purchased or even acquired for free--once you add in the cost of vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchip, dewormer, and other "tide bits" included in your adoption fee, you'll probably be surprised what a bargain it is to have chosen an adopted pet. Most shelters and rescue groups conduct thorough behavioral analyses of each pet to get a better ideal that they will be the right piece for your family. Schererville Animal Control did this and told me if anything happens to please bring the pets back. I can not recommend to adopt a shelter animal anymore than buying from a pet store etc. Most pets end up homeless through no fault of their own--"moving" and "landlord issues" are the top reasons people give for relinquishing their pets, please check out your local shelter. It was definitely 100% worth it for my children and I.

We adopted a dog from Lakeshore Paws and I'm so pleased with how it went. Admittedly I had a…read morenot-so-great experience with them 5 years ago when we were first looking to adopt, but I think they've made a lot of changes and I'm really glad we gave them another chance when searching for a second pup. When we arrived they gave us a tour of their dogs - their facility is very large and all the dogs housed there had decently-sized spaces. We originally just went to take a look, but we saw a dog we liked and ended up playing with him a bit in a separate location while supervised, we filled out an application at a computer they had there, and made plans to bring our other dog in the next day so they could meet. After the dogs met in isolated locations both outside and inside, they let us take the dog home for a foster-to-adopt situation where we could basically do a week-long trial run. We ended up extending that for a second week which was extremely helpful before finalizing the adoption. Everyone we interacted with was very friendly and helpful, down-to-earth and you could tell just trying to do their best for the dogs there. We did have an emergency with the dog (swallowed something he shouldn't have!) where we reached out, and Lakeshore Paws was quick to answer and give us directions (head to the ER!). Overall they made the adoption process easy and also thoughtful (the foster-to-adopt was really such a good idea) and were very helpful throughout. I would definitely recommend starting with them if you are looking to adopt a new family member.

We went to lakeshore paws on Aug 29,2026 and was treated horribly by the front desk girl. she was…read morevery rude and not friendly at all. when asked if we had an application on file we said yes. she proceeded to say that our application was not approved because they couldn't get a hold of our vet and landlord. no one ever called us to let us know they had an issue. when we told them we already spoke to our vet she wouldn't even listen. we asked if we could see some puppies that we seen on their website she very rudely said they already have appointments. we have never treated so rudely. if this place doesn't need people to adopt their dogs then we will find another shelter to adopt from.

I'm not sure that these folks actually want to adopt out their rescue pups. Was approved and got…read morean email stating I was approved. Second email said wait 5-7 days and respond with dogs you're interested in, which I did. Never heard back. Ended up going to a local rescue and adopted a senior companion with special needs to add to the family. Our last rescue we had for over 11 years and we kept in touch with not only his rescue (yearly with donations and events), but with the actual person who rescued him. We are sorry ARF turned out to be such a disappointment with no communication after application approval. But nonetheless, it worked out for us and the rescue we rescued from. I was warned in the therapy dog community not to attempt to adopt from them and they were correct. Hate to leave a bad review since it's all volunteers, but simple communication goes a long way when there are a lot of pups waiting for forever homes out there.
