I had been growing out my natural grey for more than three years. Taylor, my regular stylist here,…read morehas done a phenomenal job and estimated I had only 6-8 inches of previously colored hair left before my grow-out was complete. The remaining bleached ends turned orange as toner faded. Because toner didn't last, I decided to have permanent color applied to those orange sections. Taylor was on vacation, so on August 4 I was scheduled with another stylist who has more than 30 years of experience. There was no misunderstanding about what I wanted. The stylist's own appointment notes state: "She wanted permanent color used on the orange sections only from grown out highlights." During the application, I was away from the mirror. I told the stylist it felt like she was applying color much farther up than she should be. She assured me she was not going too far up. I trusted her. Unfortunately, my instinct was correct. Permanent dark color was applied far into years of my natural grey. Before this appointment, I had approximately 14 inches of natural grey and only 6-8 inches of previously colored hair remaining. Afterward, only about 3-4 inches of natural grey remained visible. My hair now looks like I only recently started growing it out. This cannot simply be undone. Calista, the salon owner, explained that removing the permanent color could leave warmth or orange tones in hair that had previously been my untouched natural grey. The salon refunded the color service. I appreciate the refund, but it is not compensation for what was lost. It returned the money I paid for a service that was not performed as agreed. I repeatedly tried to work directly with Calista on a reasonable solution. I am not trying to profit from this. I want my hair to look reasonably close to how it looked before this appointment while my grey grows back. I proposed grey-blended extensions with maintenance as a temporary solution. Calista acknowledged extensions were an option but said the salon could not fund the full cost. She explained this by quoting customer retail prices: $300-$700+ for hair, $100/hour for installation, and maintenance every 4-12 weeks. She then offered me a consultation to discuss options. I explained that those are retail prices, not the salon's actual cost. If she was unwilling to provide extensions and maintenance, I asked what alternative she would offer. A consultation made no sense until I knew what the salon was actually offering to address the loss. I received no response. After nearly a week, I followed up again. I explained that the financial consequences of correcting an employee's mistake should not be passed to the customer. The salon caused the problem, yet the proposed next step appeared to be for me to return and pay for services to correct or disguise it. I should not have to spend my own money trying to make my hair look the way it did before the salon's mistake. I again asked what the salon was willing to do to fairly address what happened and said I preferred to resolve this directly with Calista. She has not responded. This was preventable. I explained what I wanted, and the stylist documented it correctly. I questioned her during application because I felt the color being taken too high and was reassured it wasn't. Yet permanent color was applied to years of natural grey that was never supposed to be colored. Hair grows slowly. More than three years of natural growth cannot be recreated with a refund. I am not asking to be better off than I was before I walked into this salon. I have asked for a reasonable solution that allows my hair to look as close as possible to the way it looked before this service while my natural grey grows back. I gave the owner multiple opportunities to propose a solution privately. I still do not know what, if anything, she will do beyond the refund. I am devastated by what happened to my hair and equally disappointed by how it has been handled.
