We stayed here while visiting the Badlands, and while the hotel itself was clean, comfortable, and…read moreexactly what our family needed, I need to talk about David, who worked the continental breakfast area. David is not a breakfast attendant. David is a hospitality wizard who has somehow chosen to use his powers in Wall, South Dakota. He is a force of nature. A once-in-a-generation talent. A man whose mastery of hospitality borders on the supernatural. Every morning he greeted guests with a smile, kept everything stocked, cleaned, organized, and running smoothly, all while making people feel genuinely welcome. My family looked forward to seeing him each morning. I've stayed in hotels all over the country, and I can confidently say that David may be the single greatest continental breakfast attendant in the history of lodging. If there were a Breakfast Hall of Fame, he would be a first-ballot inductee. If there were a Mount Rushmore of hospitality workers, they would need to carve a fifth face. At one point I watched him refill the pancake station with such efficiency and grace that I briefly wondered if I was witnessing an advanced civilization disguised as a hotel employee. Scientists should study his ability to keep coffee flowing, raspberry-filled donuts available, and traveler morale at peak levels. Economists should measure the positive impact he has on the local tourism industry. Historians will someday ask how a continental breakfast at a roadside hotel became legendary. The answer will be simple: David. In all seriousness, David was incredibly friendly, hardworking, and professional. He made a great hotel stay even better. Give him a raise. Five stars for the hotel. Six stars for David. P.S. - If I ever return to Wall, South Dakota, it will be partly to see the Badlands again, but mostly to verify that David is, in fact, a real person and not a hospitality legend passed down through generations of travelers.

Bathroom fan didn't work and the bathroom definitely needed updated. Parking sucked, we mentioned it to staff, but they brushed it off. With Sturgis starting the week after our stay, there were so many huge trucks and trailers taking up multiple spots. Kids enjoyed the pools, that area was nice and clean.

No problem.. we called one week before arrival to verify ADA ROOM. No answers, no response to messages or emails. Finally get a human night before arrival date and gal tells us we don't have an ADA ROOM because it's not in the block of rooms reserved. Why would that matter??? We reserved the room long before the date. It's our policy she says. However no one told us when we reserved the room and no one bothered to call us. Then when we try to cancel they will not refund our money!!! We need a ADA ROOM, they did not serve us as a paying customer and we should not have been charged. Best Western do better. Hotels in general need to do better to accommodate those who need ADA ROOM. One room per hotel is NOT ACCEPTABLE!

Overall, the room had outlets for our toys (phones, camera, laptops, etc.), and it was spacious enough and modern enough. Our biggest complaint was being put on the 2nd floor and lugging our baggage up 3 flights of stairs. Also, the continental breakfast was marginal. (In Europe, a continental breakfast includes fresh pastries, jams, butter, and coffee/tea - things you might buy in an upscale bakery. Often in the States, it's coffee and vending machine fare wrapped in plastic, just as it was at this place.) On the PLUS side, Keystone is about as close as you can get to Mt. Rushmore (about 3 or 4 miles). Custer State Park and the Crazy Horse Memorial are also nearby. (You can get to Custer for breakfast in less than 30 minutes.) And the price was very inexpensive (which is marketing spiel for 'cheap'). Few motels (and fewer restaurants) are open in Keystone in February, so our options were very limited. If we stay in Keystone again, we'll likely try one of the other options for comparison. But we visited at just the RIGHT TIME of year. Keystone is a wall-to-wall tourist trap, and you are forced to crawl through town (20 mph limit) to entice you to stop and buy something. With all of the kitschy store fronts, this place must be a zoo during the summer. If forced to come during the summer, I would stay 30 minutes away in Custer before staying in Keystone. In winter (February), the town is almost empty (both day and night) with very, very light traffic - perfect! Since all of the trees nearby and around the monument are evergreens, photos are just as beautiful during winter as summer. (SO, VISIT IN WINTER!)
