Though our room did not live up to the ostentatious exterior of the resort, we did not find this place as bad as the negative reviews would suggest. Overall, the room had outlets for our toys (phones, camera, laptops, etc.), and it was spacious enough and modern enough. Our biggest complaint was being put on the 2nd floor and lugging our baggage up 3 flights of stairs. Also, the continental breakfast was marginal. (In Europe, a continental breakfast includes fresh pastries, jams, butter, and coffee/tea - things you might buy in an upscale bakery. Often in the States, it's coffee and vending machine fare wrapped in plastic, just as it was at this place.) On the PLUS side, Keystone is about as close as you can get to Mt. Rushmore (about 3 or 4 miles). Custer State Park and the Crazy Horse Memorial are also nearby. (You can get to Custer for breakfast in less than 30 minutes.) And the price was very inexpensive (which is marketing spiel for 'cheap'). Few motels (and fewer restaurants) are open in Keystone in February, so our options were very limited. If we stay in Keystone again, we'll likely try one of the other options for comparison. But we visited at just the RIGHT TIME of year. Keystone is a wall-to-wall tourist trap, and you are forced to crawl through town (20 mph limit) to entice you to stop and buy something. With all of the kitschy store fronts, this place must be a zoo during the summer. If forced to come during the summer, I would stay 30 minutes away in Custer before staying in Keystone. In winter (February), the town is almost empty (both day and night) with very, very light traffic - perfect! Since all of the trees nearby and around the monument are evergreens, photos are just as beautiful during winter as summer. (SO, VISIT IN WINTER!) read more

My family and I stayed here 1 night during out vacation in the black hills. We were planning on being in Keystone for the day but when my son saw the train he wanted to ride it and because our vacation had leeway we decided to stay here for the night. This place is horrible! Where do I begin? First off the parking spaces are tiny. I don't have a large car (VW Jetta) and the spaces were barely big enough for my car. Lots of people completely ignore the parking lines which leaves less space. I was able to sandwich myself between to larger cars and luckily didn't have any dings. The pool was freezing, the hot tub had a brown dirt (or who knows what) film around it and the hot tub was VERY foamy. When I asked how often they clean the hot tub I was told daily. I doubt that. The lobby bathrooms had no toilet paper in the men's room. We at breakfast in the restaurant the next morning. Yes, we did the buffet but it was still nasty. I know one cannot expect much out of buffets but come on. They were supposed to have free wifi but I could never get it to work. The only thing that was good about the stay was the staff. They were great. Will definitely NOT be going back here ever or any of the sister locations in Keystone for that matter. read more

When you take a road trip you look for hotels that will provide your basic needs of a bed and a bathroom. You don't need a 5 star luxury spa if all you are going to do is crash for the night then get up and leave first thing in the morning. With that in mind the Mt Rushmore White House Resort was decent. It felt very dated and badly in need of some updates, but it wasn't a bad place to stop for the night. The room was nothing fancy. It was clean and the beds were comfy enough. There was no view given that the back of the hotel faces a giant rock face. That was an upside and a downside. The upside was that it stayed dark in our room, but you didn't get to see much of anything. There was plenty of free parking which was nice. The major downside I saw to this place was that they advertised that they had rooms with fire places. We got one of those rooms only to find out the fire place is actually eletronic, meaning it is pretend. I had envisioned reading my book next to the fire to get cozy before bed. I wouldn't say this is a place I would want to hang out in or stay at more than a night. That being said, there isn't much to do for more than a day around here, so not a big deal. Good place to crash for a night though if you want no frills. read more

went to mt rushmore for kids spring break, we didnt know the town is dead during this time! Theres probably 2 resort/hotel open in keystone. No reception on our phone so we dont have a choice but to just walk in and inquire. A little bit expensive for the quality of room (needs major updating), but the swimming pool is warm and clean! For what this is - it's great. This hotel is located close to town. You can walk to tons of stuff. It has a pool and they even a certain rooms you can bring a dog. Understand this is not the nicest newest most modern hotel but it's clean, the staff was mostly friendly and our kids had a blast. The price was also one of the best in the area for what you get. Not a bad place to stay. The pros are pretty spectacular: only 2 miles from Mt Rushmore, and a few more to the Crazy Horse Memorial. The indoor pool is nice and refreshing, as is the jacuzzi. During the day the staff is very helpful and polite. Rooms are clean, A/C works, and the fridge/microwave was nice to have. Plus, being right in the middle of the tourist trap that is Keystone was an added plus- made walking around and window shopping all the easier. The cons: I called and received a quote when I made my reservation. When I arrived, the price for my room was $60 more and the clerk was not budging on it insisting that was the price I agreed on. I should have gotten the original quote in writing. Also, the night clerk (whom I checked in with) was very terse and short with us- walking around barefoot, and talking on his phone in front of us. The parking spots are very narrow- you will find it all too common to have to overtake another spot just to give yourself room to get in and out of your vehicle. And remember how I said it being in the middle of town? Entering and exiting the hotel is a very strange experience. You have to travel 1/2 a mile down the road to exit onto the main road, and if you have a vehicle of 8 ft there is no way you are entering this parking lot. Overall: Not a bad experience staying, but nothing to write home about. Will I stay there again? No, I'll probably opt for a room in Rapid City instead. read more

it is RARE, people, that i have something negative to say about a place. and here it is. first of all, not sure WHY we didn't check yelp before making a reservation there. we check yelp for everything! anyway. while we were pleased that the non-smoking room was ACTUALLY a non-smoking room, it was half the size of the rooms in their online photos. and the toilet was dirty. yuck. mattresses were so unsupportive, springy and noisy. yuck. and they refused to make up a room for us on the upper floor even though they were not completely booked. no bueno. but ALL that aside, we slept ok. and were alive the next morning. but then... we attempted to have breakfast at their restaurant. in my WHOLE life, i've only walked out from a restaurant ONCE without paying. until this morning. we dubbed it, "the great breakfast disaster of 2015." after sitting down at a booth, which we had to wipe down a bit, we perused the menu. which took all of 30 seconds. LIMITED selection is an understatement. but for breakfast, we were willing to go simple. we ordered oatmeal and a fresh fruit salad, straight off the menu. we asked for sourdough toast w one of our breakfasts, and the waitress let us know they didn't have any. nor rye, which was also a menu choice. so, fine - wheat. we made a few other small requests like water no ice. not only did all our water come w ice, a minor offense to be sure, but they also hardly had ANYTHING we ordered from the menu. plopping our $4.99 bowl of plain oatmeal on the table, our server said, "sorry we're out of fruit." when my honey asked if what he received were home fries - 3 fingerling-sized potatoes on his plate - they affirmed that yes, in fact, those three puny potatoes were home fries. our friend didn't get ANY potatoes OR home fries when his order came even though he ordered some. however, the waitress gleefully remarked, "but we were able to find some sourdough toast!" people: what they were trying to pass off as sourdough was a HOAGIE roll. an UNTOASTED, spongy, white bread long roll. friends, in no universe is that sourdough. the sign painted on the door said, "new executive chef!" after we informed our waitress we were leaving seeing as they weren't able to serve HALF of what we ordered, we thought perhaps we had been mistaken and it really said, "need to execute the chef!" we left a $5 tip for the waitress who was kind and apologetic, and LEFT. it was an overly generous tip given our experience. if you find yourself thinking you might find a good breakfast at the white house resort in keystone, do yourself a favor and RUN IN THE OTHER DIRECTION. read more

Stayed here a few years ago and the staff was rude and the room wasn't very clean. The only saving grace for this place is that it's cheap. Never will stay here again. If you don't mind paying a little more than go to the Holiday Inn Express further down the road. Much better service and rooms. read more

I'm only giving this one stars because it was pretty bad !!! I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with this hotel. I have never gone out of my way to write a bad review until today :( I can understand things close for the season out here but it seems that everyone here must really hate there jobs ! Upon arrival the front desk girl was horrible, she hardly spoke a word to us and wasn't very helpful with much of anything but clearly hating her job. When we came into our room we noticed we had maybe two squares of toilet paper and nice big stains on the floor as long as maybe blood stains on the sides of the bed sheets... ? even tho this is part of the bed I'm not sleeping on these sheets are ruined and need to be tossed into the trash. The tv was out dated... but they had HBO so we weren't 100% bored trying to fall asleep. The room it's self could be really nice if they took more time to clean things and made sure we were stocked with toilet paper and other items. It did kind of blow that they had no coffee maker in the room, but provided it out in the "lobby". Thankfully we did get a discount on the room after raising concern even tho it wasn't much, I do suspect the manager was a bit tipsy this morning as we checked us out To our dead presidents of Mt Rushmore- they would be very disappointed in the way this hotel has been "kept up" ... read more

This motel was recommended to us by a friend, but I was not impressed. The room was ok, decently clean and the beds were comfortable. We even had a mini fridge and microwave in the room, plus a giant jetted tub (not really sure why the giant tub was in a double queen room though). Our toilet did back up on the second night (which it sounds like that's a *very* common occurrence). The staff was friendly and even recommended a restaurant for our dinner, Ruby's, which turned out to be pretty good. I booked our room online and feel like I overpaid for what we got. Could have paid $20 more per night and stayed next door at the Holiday Inn Express and gotten free breakfast included. The White House Resort only offered free coffee in baby cups in the lobby. The indoor pool was nice and warm, but the hot tub had way too many chemicals in it to be comfortable. If I were to go back to Keystone, I would look to stay elsewhere. read more

This place is old. This place is dated. This place is simply not good. Needed a place close to Mt. Rushmore, and got in a little after midnight. Staff wasn't helpful. After paying for the room on hotels.com, was told that there is also a $12 resort fee, that covers a laundry list of items, including letting pets stay (note: including pets as part of your resort fee doesn't mean pets stay free, despite their claim, it means everyone is paying for stuff whether you need it or not). The WiFi is non-existent, there is no sign letting people know one side of the parking lot is a dead-end, and lastly there is one thing the resort fee doesn't cover, and that's shampoo for the shower....there are other hotels in the area that surely do a better job of giving you your money's worth, find that hotel instead. read more

The location was great, room was decently clean, and the staff was professional. However, that's where the good ends. Parking was terrible, very narrow spots that my Durango barely fit. They wanted a $10 replacement fee if I didn't return the plastic key card and their vending machines charged $1.50 for a can of soda. The room was very tiny, the bed rolled around the room, there was no shampoo/conditioner in room, and only one soap to share between the sink and shower. Old, not worth the price! We stayed here for the location, and mainly because they were pet friendly. Despite what they advertise about having renovated rooms, everything is very dated- especially the carpets and bed linens. The beds are bouncy and loud, the walls are so thin you can every word mentioned next door. The rooms are so small they could barely accommodate our luggage, and they reeked of mildew. It is not the worst motel we've ever stayed at (but in the bottom 10) but we would not stay here again. On a positive note, the staff was very friendly! read more

Watch out they will try to get you for extra nights. When we walked in a lady was at the counter trying to convince their staff she had only booked one night when they were trying to get her for two. They did the same thing to us when we checked out, they tried to get us for three nights when we only booked two. The staff always looked paranoid when we walked in, they would watch us get on the elevator. Just very weird. The rooms were clean enough, but old and not updated. I would suggest staying in Rapid City or Hill City. There isn't much in Keystone, with the exception of Teddy's Deli - that place was delicious. read more

When planning our vacation, we were all about location. This hotel was the perfect location for the activities we wanted to take part in. Don't count too much on much pool time, though. It's indoor, but it was too cold to swim in. The hot tub was nice, but of course, it was crowded because nobody wanted to get into the pool! The rooms are ok. Our main concern is always cleanliness & ours was indeed clean. It's just small & a little dated. For 2 adults & 2 teenagers, it was close-quarters, but not a huge issue. It was really nice having a fridge & microwave. What really docked the stars for us was the staff. Actually just the American staff, if you can believe that. On short notice, this hotel had four rooms available, which was amazing. We were headed to Mt Rushmore so we thought it was perfect for us. Queen bed with lots of room. The room itself was spacious and met our needs, at a price that was more than accommodating. But that was about the end of the positive comments on this hotel. Read on please: When I went to check in, the young man at the counter let me know, not in a tactful way, that their computers were rebooting and I could not check in. Instead of asking me politely to wait 15 minutes because of the computer issues, he said "Come back in 15 minutes"... no please or I am sorry. Very rude and lacking of any customer service. So, I wait 15 minutes and come back, only to sit in their lobby another 10 minutes. Then I am able to check in. Another young lady is there helping him and she has a paper in her hand, of which he grabs it rudely and dismisses her. However, I am able to check in and given a map to walk here and there to go up the stairs, but he neglected to offer us the use of the elevator, right behind us. My wife used the elevator and it was just fine. Why did he not offer us that option instead? Again, very rude (more rudeness to come). So we get to our room. Decent room, lots of space, electric fireplace adds to the ambiance. But this is where the positivity ends. The towels are hard and thin, the pillows are flat and uncomfortable, the beds are hard. My son went to the vending machine to get a bottle of water. The machine stole his money. So he went to the front desk, rang a bell, and the same young man came to the desk. My son told him that his money was stolen from the machine and he said "You woke me up for that? We don't deal with those machines" and dismissed him. HELLO!!!! WTF? So, I go to check out and I politely tell the same young man that "We had an issue with the vending machine and it took my son's money without providing the water". I was polite and tactful and the young man sighed and rolled his eyes. As if this was a serious inconvenience to him. He did give us back the $2 from the machine, but his attitude was inappropriate. Given that this was a "budget" hotel, it was somewhat adequate for the price, but the attitude of those working here was horrible. Stayed here a few months back but never got around to leaving a review. No one would approach us as we stood at the front desk w/ 2-3 employees standing right in front of us. The man who appeared to be the manager was clearly drunk and I believe he was sleeping in the back office when he wasn't out front (heard one of the employees mention this). I told the young lady I had a reservation and gave her my name, and when I had to sign the sheet of paper it was more than the amount I had reserved it for. Luckily I had taken a photo of the approved rate I had reserved online, so she removed it from my credit card and re-charged me at the correct rate. Later we bumped into a family that drove all the way from Arkansas that had made a reservation, but the front desk told them they were all booked and that they didn't have their reservation; I hoped they were able to get in to a nearby hotel.
