At the time Justin Timberlake's little brother Jonathan was one of my students as well and I remember he took to dance really well. I taught 3 to 4 classes a day from 8 years old to the teenagers and a mommy class on Fridays. Those were the good ole days in Memphis, but if you're ever in Germantown and you have the need to get your dance on please go to this studio.

Each spring, students work together and put on a big recital, for which parents have to stand in line to buy tickets. Costumes, production, the whole shebang. Rehearsals are daily the week prior to the program. Every other week of the school year, students attend a weekly class. The little ones take in the downstairs classrooms, accessed either through a back door (which they don't want anyone using when weather is cold, because it puts a chill on the downstairs studios), or through the painfully tight upper lobby and down a set of metal spiral stairs. When classes change, this is a truly hectic scene. I've started just dropping my 3 year old daughter in the lobby to walk herself down, because the stairs make me so nervous! In the changing area/restroom, something is always broken or out of order. The big dance area upstairs is a beautiful space, with plenty of room, great windows, and the tweens and teens seem to take their classes up there. The little girls are allowed to wear whatever leotard they like to classes, as long as they have appropriate dance shoes and purchase the tap shoes provided by the studio (they must all match for the show). Hair is to be up in a bun when possible, and not in a bow. When we came to join the studio in the fall, we may have caught the staff at a bad time. Miss Deborah, the dance teacher for the little ones, had just driven to Chicago and then lost her phone while she was up there. I never could get anyone on the phone from the actual studio, and have not been able to get much information from them via email. Your best bet is just to come into the studio between 4-5:30 one afternoon, to get information in person. It sounds from this review that it is a terrible place, but my daughter *adores* her hour-long ballet class, Miss Deborah, and the other little ballerinas. As long as she continues to enjoy it, we'll keep her enrolled. Maybe someday they'll expand, or get a bigger space. Until then, keep handing out the stickers, and we'll keep paying!

No one is judged upon social status, race, or sexual orientation here. If you are in Recovery they have a wonderful NA group as well as AA Al-anon, Grief, Co-Dependency groups, etc. They also have voice and music lessons which I loved and helped me grow into the musician I had wanted to be for years. Walking down (or up?) Beale Street on a Saturday afternoon I just happened to notice the Museum &…read moreGallery with a modest sign on the door that said, "Pay What You Wish Today." I was not previously aware of Dr. Earnest C. Withers and his iconic photographs documenting the Civil Rights Movement, but when I poked my head in to check it out, I immediately knew it was worth an in-depth look and I beckoned my traveling companion (a talented photographer in his own right) to join me in stopping by. As I previously mentioned, though I never heard of Withers, I quickly realized that I've seen some of his most famous photos in other museums, documentary films, and history books. Beyond those few examples, I was impressed by the hundreds of photographs capturing both important figures and events in the Civil Rights Movement. Withers was a truly talented photographer with unprecedented access to people and events, and a great eye for capturing frames that tell an important story. I'd recommend stopping in whether it's "Pay Whatever Day" or not. I was happy to make a generous contribution. (BTW -- you can see more of Withers' work at the National Civil Rights Museum -- another five star venue -- reviewed separately).

It is a priviledge because my wife works in the hospital and I come to the campus often to have breakfast with her as well as I've been here for check presentations for fundraisers that we've done and for other fundraising activities over the years. This is truly an amazing and wonderful place of hope where miracles happen every day. I feel blessed to have been able to have these experiences. The Danny Thomas / ALSAC Pavilion is a beautiful place that serves as a historical record of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the American, Lebanese and Syrian Associated Charities and it's founder, Danny Thomas. The layout of the Danny Thomas/ALSAC Pavilion is in a star-like shape with five alcoves surrounding the rotunda. It's design symbolizes the far-reaching scope of ALSAC and the work of St. Jude. The brilliant Terrazzo flooring, with a radiating geometric pattern, lines the entry. Inside the dome there's marble-sheathed columns supporting a cupola painted in blues & greens with magenta and purple accents, indicative of the colors of the Mediterranean. You see the lovely calligraphically inscriptions on the arched panels in Arabic and translated in English, that sum up the founder and hospital's mission: "He who denies his heritage has no heritage." "No child should die in the dawn of life." "Those who work for the good are as those who do the good." Tours are by reservation, self-guided and free to the public and available 8 am - 4 pm every day. Home to the Memphis Songwriters Association monthly meetings, Mark Parsell has been and is acting president of the longest consistently run grass roots songwriters association in Memphis that was founded by Estelle Acton (the AX in STAX) along with several others in 1973. The all ages events (with some occasional exceptions) is run just like a house concert where listeners are allowed to tip whatever they can afford ($5 to $10 per person suggested by me) and bring their own drinks or donate to the house beer/wine fund. I'm so excited I was finally able to scratch a visit to Sun Studios off of my Memphis to-do list…read more For music history lovers it's one of the most iconic places to make a pilgrimage to stand where some of the greats stood as they recorded hit songs that have remained relevant more than 80 years later. You can't reserve tours online and are available on a first come first serve basis and take place at the half hour mark. I arrived at about 12:15 and despite the 12:30 tour being removed as available for the tour board the employee at the front kindly let me slide into the 12:30 tour group. It's a small building but A LOT of history and memorabilia are packed into the building . The guided tour begins on the second floor where there is a small single room with musuem exhibits and items from the early days of Sun Records. After spending time here you'll be taken back downstairs to spend time in the actual recording studio. In total the tour lasted about 45 minutes and you were able to linger at the end without feeling rushed to take photos with THE microphone and soak in the energy of the space. If you're any kind of music lover you can't miss this building where so much pop culture and music history was made.
