There is a newspapers stand which is tiny and not well stocked (especially when it comes to NON italian items). The bar is rather large, has both plenty indoor seating as well as quite a bit outdoor options. The waiting area is old and "rustic". Though it is periodically cleaned, it just seems oddly funky. The ticket counters operate between 5:30 and 20:00 and, with a bit of luck, the person servicing you will be able to understand english. There also are 2 self-service ticket stand, which you can use with the English option, both to purchase your ticket and to review timetables. Unless there is a major change, normally the trains heading towards Udine leaves from track 1, the ones heading towards Venice, Milan and (mostly) everywhere else, leaves from track 2. MAKE SURE ypu stamp your ticket on those yellow looking stamping machines. If they are all out, track down the CONTROLLORE and inform them, otherwise ypu may have to end up paying a stiff fine!

The historic architecture, charming canals, colorful boats, and beautiful bridges make you feel like you've stepped back in time. Everywhere you look, there's history, culture, and incredible scenery. Watching the boats glide through the canals while people go about their daily lives is simply mesmerizing. We spent time just relaxing along the water, taking in the views, and enjoying the atmosphere. It was peaceful, beautiful, and unlike anywhere else I've ever visited. The restaurants, cafés, and waterfront views only added to the experience. Out of all the places I visited in Italy, Venice was by far my favorite. As someone who loves history and historic architecture, this city exceeded every expectation. I could easily spend days wandering its streets and canals. It's a destination I would absolutely return to and highly recommend to anyone visiting Italy.

You can buy your tickets ahead of time at the little convenient stores around town or at the machines at the station. I prefer the station machines because they have English and are less confusing. There's history here and it goes back to WWI, when this part of the Country was ceded by Austria (the Loser) to Italy (the Winner). And even though this area remains ruled by Rome, the Alto Adige region is in the autonomous hands of the mostly German-speaking population. Gayle and I arrived at Bahnhof Bozen from Venice (via Verona). We then walked over to the nearby Bus Station, and took local transit (SAD) to our ultimate Dolomites destination (Castelrotto/Kastelruth). Unfortunately, we didn't spend anytime in Bolzano/Bozen itself, which is a tourist destination in its own right. The Station itself is fairly plain, with the usual collection of ticket counters, tourist information, canteen, and a tobacco shop. Gayle and I especially appreciated that there were actually elevators that were available to take us down from our track and then back up to the main station. For some reason, every other Italian Station we frequented didn't have many of the most basic of ADA-related features, which provided lots of stair climbing "opportunities" and "adventure" when there were just a few minutes to make a connection.

This vaporetto means "little steamer," after the city's original system of steam-powered motorboats, and takes visitors along the main canals, to the outer islands, and around the lagoon. Although often crowded, it's by far the least expensive way to get around (other than walking). Tickets are one price, regardless of the length of the journey. Last Sunday, my partner, our friends, family members, and I used this transport to take us to the island of Murano. The travel agency has given 2-day tickets for us. However, the rudeness of the staff, especially on Murano, who think that the Venetian dialect is the world language, and the difficulty in understanding which line to take to go where one wants. Utterly overcrowded to the point of being dangerous. We managed to get where we wanted, but the maps were very difficult to interpret. Too bad there is no alternative.

The operators are mostly helpful so ask before getting on the boat. Don't worry if you get on the wrong one! There are a lot of stops and they tend to arrive every 10 minutes or so. It is way more economical and practical to buy multi day passes if you are staying more than a day. You will be jumping on and off them multiple tines per day. On board, you can only buy a day pass. For multi day pass go to a ticket office. A single trip ticket is 9.5 euros, day pass 25 euros, 2 day pass 35 euros and 3 day pass is 45 euros. For the airport, you need Alilaguna which requires a different kind of ticket, 18 euros per person. Water taxies and gondolas are pretty expensive, more than 100 euros.

However, this is a fundamental station with almost nothing inside. The station has very few stores and a coffee shop with pizzas and sandwiches available. Perfect for a quick meal or a cup of coffee while waiting for the train. The biggest problem with this station is they have very few chairs in the lobby area for the passengers to sit down and wait for their train. Trieste Centrale is clean, and the area looks safe. Many bus stops are in front of the station. Very easy to navigate inside the station.

We were delighted as when we went to buy our return tickets to Venice the smiling young lady spoke perfect English and was able to answer all our travel questions. When you buy tickets you have a window of train times you can take so it's not just jump on any train going your way. So just be alert. And the polite staff are fastidious about checking tickets aboard the train. It was an 100 mile each way journey to Venice Santa Lucia and back at an hour and 15 minutes each way - 15 euro each way per person - 2nd class. No first class offered but the scenic views were priceless. The Trieste station had a fairly big cafe serving a good range of reasonably priced food and drinks and the signage was easily read and followed. If you are more comfortable with technology then there are plenty of machines to buy tickets with a selection of languages available but we do prefer dealing with human beings especially as pleasant as the staff we encountered. It was a grand day out.
