More often than not this store is pretty good. Shakes are usually just right and the Frisco is the sandwich your looking for. Sometimes you can tell the night shift is less motivated if you drive up. Waiting Staff are usually nice. We use to head up to this store after the bar scene. Waiting staff had more patience with customers than deserved sometimes after the bars close. One word for the Steak & Shake in Marion-HORRIBLE. It doesn't get much worse than this! Have been there a handful of times- usually by someone else's suggestion- and it is consistently awful. Unfortunately, late at night it is the only game in town. Worst experience- no exaggeration- last time I was there, I waited 1 hour and 15 minutes for my food. There were only two of us and we only ordered hamburgers and French fries. I hate to have to write this review. The Marion S'n'S has been a staple of my dining for more than a decade. In high school, it was one of the few late night hangouts in the area that my friends and I could frequent. And before she passed away last year, there was nothing my grandmother loved more than a chocolate shake from Steak 'n' Shake. But over the last couple of years, the service here has just gotten strange. I think there's a lack of quality training going on, and I haven't had a visit in recent history in which nothing weird or unexpected happened. Try going through a drive-thru at 11:30 at night and having to pull up and wait 10 minutes just for a milkshake because, according to the woman taking orders at the drive-thru, she was the only person on staff who knew how to make a milkshake. Or dining in one night and being told to have patience because every position in the store is training that night. That particular night, I ordered a cheeseburger with bleu cheese on it, and the bleu cheese was still in a perfectly round, frozen blob in the center of the burger. My wife and I popped in here for a visit on the 4th. The restaurant was busy, but not crowded. Our waitress appeared to have never done her job before. I told her what kind of burger I wanted, and she immediately started to walk away without asking me if I wanted fries or if I needed anything to drink. I had to stop her and make her come back just so I could get a Coke. That was the last time she visited our table for a long time. Our food was brought out by a manager, who also offered to get me a refill. After my wife looked at her burger, she realized that the waitress had never asked her what she wanted on it. She just had a plain, dry cheeseburger sitting there. Mine had lettuce and tomato, but nothing else. We also realized we didn't have silverware or napkins at our table. We waited for our server to come back, but instead the manager visited us again and said he would get us some napkins. Finally, our server came back by the table with napkins and pretty much threw them on the table and kept walking without even looking at us. Then she came back by about a minute later with an even bigger stack of napkins and once again just kept walking. During most of our time there, I could see our server standing around in the kitchen talking to other servers rather than checking on her customers. After all this, we realized that we had never been given a check so we could pay. We had to wait until the manager returned to our table again, and then he said it was his fault because he forgot to bring the check out. Kind of strange that we got better service and more attention from a manager than we did the server. My suggestion if you're craving Steak 'n' Shake is to hit the drive thru and avoid going in. You may have to wait a little longer than expected, but you won't have to worry about horrible service. read more

Usually good service here. Went for breakfast and a man whose not a waiter there seated us. We waited at least fifteen minutes and no one came to our table. There was one other couple there. We could see and hear the waitresses talking but no service. I don't believe they noticed when we left. read more

The customer service was horrible. Three different workers, including one manager, walked passed the drive thru window drinking their drinks, looking at us, and walk away without taking our money. After waiting in the drive thru for 10 minutes, someone finally took our money and pulled us forward and said they would bring our food shortly. First, I enjoy eating there. But this morning when I got my home style breakfast, not only were the eggs not done medium, but the whites were not cooked, the whites were actually runny. The wheat bread was just that, bread, not even toasted, and they had the size of from a quarter to 50 cents piece size butter on them. The hash browns were about 2% burned and the rest of the potatoes were raw. BE VERY CAUTIOUS WHEN CHOOSING A PLACE TO EAT.....On the 28th of December my family and I (party of 8) went to Steak n Shake in Marion, IL. The server came and got everyone's drink order. They go by seat number and the seats 1,2, 4, 7, and 8 ordered milk shakes which they have to make up. Seats 3 and 5 ordered sodas and seat 6 (me) ordered a water. When she came with the drinks everyone got theirs except me. Since she was busy I told her it was not big deal to bring it with the shakes. In the mean time, she had waited on a party of 2 that came in and was seated after us. However, they received their food and shakes before we did. Now mind you I still do not have my water and everyone else has their drink. I got up and went to our server that was busing the table behind me and asked about the water, she said she was busy but would get it in just a sec. I said ok, but could you make it a decaf coffee instead (boy was that a mistake). So, as the time progressed the shakes finally came and guess what, yep you guessed it no water or coffee. Then two other servers brought the food to the table and I inquired about the water and coffee. They told me they were making a fresh pot and again I said oh ok. So, there I was sitting with no drink and no food and the other 7 had their drink and food. Yes, the individuals who ordered shakes actually had their drinks and food. The other 7 were finishing up their meal when yep you guessed it my meal finally came but not my drink. Now mind you I ordered a simple taco salad without the crunch tortilla chips (how hard is that to make). One member of my party ordered the chili mac three way and was given a spoon to eat it with. Exactly how do you eat spaghetti with only a spoon? She went behind the servers station and got her own silverware as we did not get any with the food. After she did that it was about a minuet and half and silverware and napkins were brought to the table (unrolled). So, I inquired again and was told they would check to see if it had been done brewing. I literally received my coffee 5 minuets before everyone was ready to leave. I only was able to get a couple bites of food and two sips of coffee in before asking for a to go container. The worst part about this whole thing is that while I was sitting there without anything the server had time to converse with not 1 or 2 but 4 individuals in the party of 8. When she finally served me my food she told me she was triple seated and it was a no-no. How exactly is that the customers business or fault? Also, where was management when all this was going on why were they not out on the floor picking up the slack? So, I turned in a complaint to home office on 1/5/2018 about my experience and this is what I received as a response "We are very sorry that your 12/30/2017 visit to the Steak n Shake in Marion IL did not live up to expectations and are grateful to you for telling us about it. If people like you did not bring these matters to our attention, we would never be able to fix them. We have forwarded your comments to the appropriate District Manager and Director of Operations so they can address the issue with the store management. If you have any further concerns in the future, please share them with us. Our goal is to continuously improve the Steak n Shake experience and to keep you as a regular guest. Sincerely, Customer Service Manager" I am yet to hear for the appropriate district manager or director of operations which tells me that the complaint did not get forwarded.....so, if you have a large party AVOID steak n shake in Marion, IL. I am not sure why all the high marks. Recently their customer service has been lackluster. A friend purchased gift cards but was charged double for the, with the run around and no refund and a bad attitude in general. Last time I was there with my family we walked in and waited to be seated, only to be passed by for 20 minutes while others with fewer in their party were given seats. We tried to get someone's attention but they were snooty with the 'hold on' signal. We left without getting a table and we'll never go back. Always been a fan of Steak 'n Shake. Quick decent food and reasonable price. I've waited awhile to post this review. Given them a few chances. I'm done. Over the last few months we've either eaten in or hit the drive thru because it's the closest to our house. Convenience and all. Rarely do they get an order correct and those times they do the food is undercooked or burned to hell and back. The staff just stands around flirting with each other and talking about "how drunk they're going to get this weekend". I've complained but to no avail. The same girl that throws your food at you through the drive window is still there--throwing food. Shame used to be decently run. read more

I usually like Steak and Shake and have probably had it 100 times in my life if I was guessing. This was without question the worst tasting I'd ever had. Service was fine, no complaints. My family and I decided to have dinner at steak n shake. When we walked in an employee was cleaning the doors and walked back in at the same time as us. We stood waiting to be sat while servers just stared at us. We watched as one of 4 dirty tables was more important than us. We watched as servers chatting at the server station was more important than us. We watched as mopping the floor was more important than us. Each employee at one time or another made eye contact with us and yet after 5 minutes of waiting to be sat in a near empty restaurant we turned and left. BEWARE!!!! Crazy ass waitresses in there! My husband and three kids stop on our way home 350 miles away and I order my food. Extremely slow service! Though not the problem. I am in there ordering and sitting at the counter for 30 minutes then go outside and give the kids their food and my husband takes the baby in to change her diaper. I follow him in and wash a couple bottles in the bathroom. BOOM!!! I have two police officers at the bathroom and they bum rush my husband in the bathroom mid changing of diaper and they said the restaurant called the police on us saying we were fighting in the parking lot! No one would fess up except the waitress that was helping me the whole time saying it wasn't true. Both of us required to have our drivers licenses run thru police department in front about 50 ppl!!! My 14 and 16 year old even told them it wasn't true!!! We feel so violated right now it isn't even funny!!! These women are on drugs or just wanted drama!!!! We were in a hurry, so we chose Steak and Shake instead of going home and cooking under the thought this would be quick. It took not too long to get seated, kudos there. Our server promptly greeted us and asked if we were ready to order. We said we could only order drinks at that time (big mistake). 10 minutes later, she came with our drinks and we gave her our order. 35 minutes later she came back with our order. The tenders were hot, but all of our burgers were cold and straight out wrong. We made our appointment 5 minutes late. My advice, should you choose to eat here: 1) only go through the drive through. They were servicing the drive thru, but the inside, not so much. 2) If you choose to dine in, and I strongly disadvise this if you need to be somewhere, make sure you only order burgers. Other tables that got their meal promptly were burger only orders. They couldn't manage to sink 3 tenders into a fryer to get our order out and the waitress was back there constantly asking if our tenders were done. When the tenders come hot and the burgers cold, that is a problem. 3) Don't complain. If you do, they go get the manager and you have to talk to here and explain how you don't like being served your cold burger 45 minutes into what should be maximum 15 minute long wait. They then explain how they are "sorry" and "they are trying". 4) If your order is wrong don't let them have your food! read more

This place is a hit or miss... we went there yesterday and it took a good 45 minute to an hour to get our food. Our waitress wasn't very polite, she didn't come check on us once and she didn't even bring the food the manager. My husband asked for a Pepsi(he didn't realize they only had coke products) she didn't even tell him it was only coke product like most places do. The food was alright but my husband asked for a third patty on his frisco melt and when he got it the third party was a half so it wasn't on the full sandwich. He asked for some sauce and it never came. Like i said it's hit or miss mostly miss though. We've been there when it was good. We rarely ever go anymore, I don't recommend this place anymore. Oh and the drive thru I sat there 30 minutes for 1 sanwhich! I would have left but I already paid. And then my husband told me it was stale and the meat tasted bad.
