After living in Greensboro for a year, I had inally found at home. I initially called Excel Moving & Storage, but it was such a complete disaster, that I canceled them, and then contacted Steele & Vaughn. I was so glad that I did! When I left a message, they called me back promptly, I explained my situation and how much I had to move, and they made an appointment to come out and assess my home goods. This should be standard for every moving company. Oddly enough when I called Excel, no one bothered to make an appointment with me to come out and see what I had to move or the layout of the condo I was moving out of. Given the fact that I was leaving a "high maintenance" high rise with strict rules on move outs, the moving coordinator made sure to make a good plan to pack up one day, and then move everything out the next day. If we had tried to do it all in one day, it would have been impossible, and I was only allowed to reserve the elevator one day! The packers came and packed everything up, and they did a great job, almost too great. As someone who feels strongly about conservation, I felt a twinge of guilt at the amount of paper used to wrap up all my goods and dishes etc. The move-out and subsequent move-in to my new home went very smoothly. The guys were efficient and professional, especially since it was a VERY hot day for the move. Over all I was very pleased with the service. I paid for the move myself, and while it was a local move, given the amount of stuff I had to move, I thought the price was pretty reasonable. I also got calls from the supervisor, checking in to see if my move was going well, which I appreciated. Oddly enough, I also got a call from Excel moving asking the same thing. This company was recommended by our realtor as great white glove service. First impression with the director of marketing and colleague was fantastic. Seemed very nice and professional. Then, the day of the move these rough guys show up and start roughing up all our nice solid wood furniture and got in a big hurry. They were not working in coordination with each other and playing loud music, just cutting up. They damaged two large pieces of solid wood furniture. The response I got from the director of marketing was that this is why they have insurance and are regulated by the state. They gave me a $300 discount and did not fix my furniture. One of the movers left cigarette butts at the old house (which was already sold and clean) and at the new house driveway. Not professional at all. Don't waste your money or time. They are not cheap either. Look elsewhere. read more

We had to move after 31 years in the same place and didn't have a choice in who the mover was (long story.) They sent out 4 guys to pack us up. I watched them as best I could but there was a lot going on. At this point I'm still not completely unpacked but about 1 in 5 boxes on average is crazy they way it was done. I don't know if the guys got tired and no longer cared, or if there was one out of the four that just didn't give a flip. But I'm finding some boxes where everything is literally thrown in there without any packing materials. I've found things smashed and damaged that I will now have to take my time and effort to have restored. For example, my grandmother and father's ancient wedding photo in antique frame; a lamp shade smashed; cracked crock pot; mangled bicycle; etc, to name a few. I will file a claim but why can't they train these guys better. And one guy ate tootsie pops all day and left the "sticks" all around the house, including in the toilet bowl. I will say they were all very polite, but still sad about the damage that I will have to deal with now. When we moved to NC from Tennessee I had a better experience. read more

AVOID STEELE & VAUGHN FOR INTERSTATE MOVES I am a senior professional who has moved 12 times over 35 yrs (including internationally) and my move with S&V was the worst move experience I have ever had. I don't generally write reviews of this type but I feel compelled to do so now to warn others. I initially used S&V for a move from VA to GSO in 2018 and it was handled well. Based on that, I returned to S&V 18 months later for a move to Houston. S&V told me they regularly handle interstate moves. Here's what happened: * My initial plan was to move directly to HOU in March, after I found a home here. However, 2 wks before Christmas, I received an offer on my house in GSO which required me to vacate in early Jan. S&V said "no problem." However, then the problems emerged fast and furious. * 1st, I asked for my shipment to be sent directly to HOU and stored here. As S&V does not have an affiliate in HOU, they convinced me to store in GSO where they could control the cost (i.e., collect the storage fees). * 2nd, I now had to pay for 2 moves - a local move into their GSO storage facility and an interstate move to HOU. At this point, I should have realized that S&V could not handle the move. But, at the time, I was dealing with everything that comes with selling a home, starting a new job, traveling for work, and preparing for the move and the holidays. * 3rd, after the truck moved away, I discovered that a small suitcase and 2 chair cushions were loaded onto the truck by mistake, items in the guest toilet were left behind, and damage was done to the door sills. * 4th, after scheduling the move to HOU, S&V called to ask me about delivery logistics in HOU. They had looked at my address on Google Maps and concluded that they could not park their truck on my street. This was probably right, but one would expect that they knew how to deal with this. After all, they are a moving company. Nope. The requests I received were to ask my landlord and call the City of HOU to determine if I needed to get a permit for their truck. This request came in the middle of a very busy work week as I was adjusting to a new job in a new city. Nevertheless, I immediately tried to get in touch with my landlord (but he did not respond) and I said that I would drive by the house over the weekend. As I was getting pressure from S&V for an answer, I took the logical next step - I called other moving companies in HOU to determine how they would handle the delivery. * 5th, as I talked to other movers, I thought it advisable to consider having another mover collect my items in GSO and deliver them to HOU as S&V was increasingly appearing to be unfit for this portion of my move. So, I asked for information from S&V about wgt and cu ft to find out what it would cost to have someone else deliver them. * 6th, within less than 60 mins of finding out that I was considering other options (and more than 2 wks before my scheduled delivery), Bryan Jones, the S&V owner, unilaterally cancelled my scheduled move and told me to get another mover. This was done by email (without the courtesy of a call) and despite my advising him that I was simply trying to get information on how to get my move done efficiently on the basis that S&V had placed on me the onus of working out the HOU logistics. * What followed were the torpedoing of my very busy workweek arranging another mover, extra cost, and a series of emails from Bryan seeking to justify with selective facts his unprofessional judgment and business practice of unilaterally cancelling a scheduled move for a 2-time existing customer (who he referred to as a "potential customer" despite the fact that my 14,000 lbs of household furnishings were sitting in his warehouse) without the courtesy of a discussion to work out what could have been chalked down to, at best, a mis-communication or, at worst, a job that was too big for S&V to handle. My dismay with S&V remains as I unpack my shipment to find crushed and broken items and unusual packing decisions (Why is the power cord for the TV on the 3rd floor packed with the dishes from the 1st floor? Why was a heavy item packed on top of a $250 flower arrangement? Why are heavy items packed at the bottom of dishpack size boxes? Etc). I have asked Mr. Jones to refund a portion of the fees that I paid to S&V to cover the added expense of hiring a 2nd moving company and to remediate the low service quality. His response has been to accuse me of "extortion", to threaten to report me to the Bar and to repeat his selective facts justifying his decision to cancel my move, which he will no doubt post here. As I have no desire to deal with him further, I'm chalking this up to a bad experience to learn from. My recommendation to others: If you have a complex, long-distance move, take the time and make the investment to go with a reputable national/international moving company and steer well clear of S&V. read more

The team at Steele & Vaughn are professional, courteous, prepared and prompt. We had a short distance move (less than 10 miles) and the team took great care of our fragile items as well as furniture and outdoor items (3,200 sq. ft. home). They treated our move as if they were moving their own home and that was with respect. I highly recommend this team and you won't be disappointed. They return phone calls and emails timely and provide a face-to-face visit up front to assess your pending move or inquiry and are competitively priced. Save yourself the nightmare, pack it yourself and call a different company. Our family hired Steele & Vaughn last year to move our home and it was easily the Worst decision of my year. I brought my concerns directly to the owner, Bryan Jones, and he was combative, hostile, and accused me of trying to "steal his money". Some of the pieces of their work: -charged more than $1000 more than quoted -spend 2 days to pack, quoted for 1 -unloaded until 10pm on moving day. what a nice way to enjoy a new home! Pay people to move, then help them unload so you can search for your sheets til 4am! What luxury. -double billed me for packing & moving time. Unethical as all get out. -told we needed 3 movers, only got 2. -Failed to provide TV boxes, duct taped pieces of cardboard together instead and said "hope it makes it without breaking" -used $45/box dishpacks to pack pillows instead of $8 rectangular boxes -packed my Christmas tree holder upside down on my $400 comforter -packed electronics upside down at the bottom of a tall dishpack box, crushing sensitive pieces -dumped contents of the spice rack into a box full of children's stuffed animals. Tigger smells like cumin now. -damaged an antique china cabinet -packed a silverware tray at the top of a dishpack box, dumping silverware thoughout The service, delivery, and customer response are some of the worst I've every imagined. WARNING! UNPROFESSIONAL & STRESSFUL!!! My washing machine was connected and I was told "It's ready to go." They did not connect the drain hose & my new house flooded from 2nd floor through the ceiling to 1st floor and down through the ceiling of the basement (3 floors). When we called to tell S&V and let them know we had a $1000 deductible, they blocked our calls. It took every day for 4 months to repair our new home. They showed up with a truck too small and they were jamming and stacking my boxes & furniture to the top of the truck to make them fit causing damage to my furniture and I had 11 CRUSHED boxes delivered. I had to leave a few things behind. A large basket of trash under my desk was poured in a box, sealed and I was charged a packing charge for packing trash! The attic was to be packed and S&V said it was complete, but 1/4 was left undone and I received a $1000+ bill for 3 hrs of incomplete work. They dumped the ceramic briquettes from my grill in my new yard and left them in the flower beds. They split a large piece of wood on a good piece of furniture (no way they did not know of the damage when they delivered it) & chipped a new bookcase to which a mover said he could fix it and proceeded to the truck to return with a Sharpie marker and started coloring the bookcase w/o asking me if he could do so. He said, "All fixed." They lost the pegs to hold the shelves to the new bkcase and now I have a new bkscase with no shelves!! They stopped inventorying my boxes and when I told the guys the boxes needed to be added to my inventory, they just walked right by me and put them on the truck. I unpacked a box that had pages of my inventory and the carbons wadded up in a box of my books. I could go on and on about damage to my walls, blocked calls ignoring lack of responsibility for all the damages, etc. read more

If you are moving out of state, avoid this company at all costs. My furniture wasn't wrapped and therefore was damage. No one wants to take responsibility to have it repaired. Nice group of guys but not a good company for moving out of state. read more

5 1/2 months ago I used Steele and Vaughn for a local move because the quote seemed reasonable and the owner seemed professional. Unfortunately, he proved otherwise. He grossly underestimated the amount of furniture and belongings although we reviewed what needed to be moved together. I had to be at the new house and left the old house in the hands of my elderly mother who was frazzelled at the chaos of the movers. A large number of items (all my clothes) and other stuff was not loaded on the truck. Boxes marked FRAGILE were tossed off the truck in my presence, resulting in breakage of some unreplaceable items. Boxes were place haphazardly in the wrong rooms. Finally, an antique table was broken during the move (plus two lamps which were repaired promptly). I had to recruit a group of four friends with a passenger van, a trailer and a minivan to complete my move the following day, making 3 additional trips! This did not include the 5 trips my mother and I made in our two cars on the third day to get the items that we did not get with the help of my friends. During this process, my calls were not returned. I was pretty much called a liar by the owner in front of a friend who accompanied me to the store with two damaged lamps. The owner, who I now understand has sold the business, was totally unprofessional in the way in talked to me and refused to return my calls, but had his assistant or store manage call me instead. Instead of sending the antique table to a professional to repair, the owner attempted to repair the table himself, which I pointed out could not be done correctly. After two months of weekly or biweekly calls, he had a "professional" furniture repairman pick up the table. Five months after the move, I finally received my repaired table back. In spite of the transfer of the business, I would not feel comfortable ever doing business with this firm again, because the same staff and employees remain. read more

The guys they sent out were lazy and rude and complained about everything that needed to be done. I feel they purposely dragged and stalled for a move that could have taken half the time. I had contacted several companies and this one was by far the friendliest right from the first contact. I had Dean come to my house to give me a quote and he gave me tips to make the move go quicker (and cheaper since it's an hourly job), which I appreciated. Moving day was also the day I closed on my house and I was so nervous that something would go wrong but I lucked out. The movers Ron and Brian showed up on time and were friendly and worked quickly. They even helped us move in a refrigerator that we bought on the lunch break that they had no idea they'd have to move in and that really saved the day! If I had to wait for Lowe's to deliver I would have been without a fridge for almost a week. I was also pleasantly surprised when payment time came that I owed much less than what was originally quoted. I don't plan on moving for a long time, but next time I think I'll have them pack too!! read more
