The separate kids room near the end added to the value for us with bison themed puzzles, puppets, children's books and craft area. We spent nearly two hours inside but were passed by many other families. Added value is that the museum is adjacent to the frontier village and largest bison statue to add to your visit. The gift shop has many bison themed items and even has a freezer with some bison meat and sausages for purchase.

What a great place!…read more It's hard to miss as the world's largest buffalo statue is easily seen as you drive by on interstate 94. The huge buffalo statue draws you in, but the museum makes the visit very worthwhile. Great information about the life of buffalo on the plains through generations of human exploration and settlement. Fortunately humans with foresight put into place conservation efforts just in time to prevent the extinction of the great American buffalo. A good video, displays, hands on kids exhibits, beautiful vistas, a herd of resident buffalo that you would be advised NOT to try to outrun, and very nice gift shop made this a very pleasant surprise.

They have a main building that's full of a slew of Grand Forks county area history, including a lot of the flood stuff. They have a timeline of the Pulitzer-winning news coverage of the flood by the Grand Forks Herald. Then they have a log cabin that the original owners retrofitted into a house in the early 1900s. They have a carriage garage with a working Model A as well as a slew of other wagons and some unique modes of transportation (children's sleigh to be towed behind a car, grain hoppers, etc.). They have a frontier-era log-cabin style post office/communications building. A period gas station. The best part is...they have a mail-order build-it-yourself steel home that was sold in the post WWII-era to deal with a housing shortage, filled with period stuff, including a flip-top microwave. You'd order the parts, they'd come in boxes on trucks, and you'd weld it all together. People were living in it until the 1997 flood, as a testament to its durability and safety. $5 to get in to the while thing, kid friendly, group friendly and the tour guide is nice and very knowledgeable. They're only open from 1 to 5 p.m., but no tours after 4 p.m. So, plan to get there in time. The grounds are also used for concerts and weddings and such.

The only part that truly made this experience worth while is the church. The church was awesome and I would go again just to see the interior of the church. Its history is awesome and it smells wonderful inside. Just looking at the outside of the church isn't good enough.

We arrived at 12pm and completed the tour at 4pm, so be prepared to walk a lot. It's so worth it and there are benches all around to sit. There is an eating area as well with picnic tables. It's a walk through a nice village filled with memorabilia donated from the 1880s and 1900s. There are many antique homes, banks, drug stores, antique cars, planes, church, telephones, saloon, barbershop, ice creamery etc, to see from long ago. We had a super day and learned a lot. There are many photo opts as well. Great for the family, adults and kids as well. There's a gift shop on the premises, with souvenirs and snacks. I totally recommend!!

This outdoor museum includes historic buildings that were moved to this site…read moreincluding the first house (cabin) in Fargo, a German immigrants home, newspaper office with printing presses, barber shop, dry goods store, apothicary, fire station, sherifff office, saloon, and so much more. They also have an 80-ton train engine, caboose, pullman carriage and train snownplow in their train shed. It's a bit dark in there but absolutely worth a visit. You can walk through the caboose and the pullman. The airplane display also includes an ambulance and a snow vehicle. The helicopter is retired from service in Vietnam. You can walk through the C-47. Gliders, bi-plane, jet. It's a really good collection. Then you have the antique car cillection, agricultural machine collection, Telephone museum, and on and on. So much history in one place. There are picnic tables on site under full sun. Do be sure to bring water and wear sunscreen and a hat in summer as you will be walking between buildings. Public restrooms are in the main building and the church basement. The gift shop sells soda and water aside from toys and gifts, etc. Private parking lot. They have a variety of discounted entries so check out their website for information and add this to your list of places to visit.

It's free to visit (there's a box for donations) and each building is a stop on an audio tour you can listen to on your phone. And the audio tour is a much larger tour that extends to modern Jamestown as well (I didn't have time to do that). Lots of photo ops. Great for families or for individuals. The World's largest Buffalo and a Buffalo museum (admission required) are on the same grounds. There's also a souvenir shop that has good ND stuff. Even better selection that I was able to find in either Bismarck or Fargo.

It is also home to the world's largest buffalo. This giant is 60 feet long and weighs 60 tons. If you pass through Jamestown and are into old west history, this is a must see.

I was here for an hour on a peaceful Sunday morning, just about the only patron. So it was quiet and reflective. I particularly enjoyed the "Jacqueline Kennedy" by Andy Warhol (1965) screenprint.
