The entry video was informative and displays of actual bison including an albino were great to see. We used our reciprocal pass from another museum for entry. The separate kids room near the end added to the value for us with bison themed puzzles, puppets, children's books and craft area. We spent nearly two hours inside but were passed by many other families. Added value is that the museum is adjacent to the frontier village and largest bison statue to add to your visit. The gift shop has many bison themed items and even has a freezer with some bison meat and sausages for purchase. read more

Located on the high plains of North Dakota is the National Buffalo Museum. What a great place! It's hard to miss as the world's largest buffalo statue is easily seen as you drive by on interstate 94. The huge buffalo statue draws you in, but the museum makes the visit very worthwhile. Great information about the life of buffalo on the plains through generations of human exploration and settlement. Fortunately humans with foresight put into place conservation efforts just in time to prevent the extinction of the great American buffalo. A good video, displays, hands on kids exhibits, beautiful vistas, a herd of resident buffalo that you would be advised NOT to try to outrun, and very nice gift shop made this a very pleasant surprise. read more

Very nice and interesting place. I am not the biggest fan of taxidermy but they did a wonderful job preserving these animals.

Wanted to stop on Thursday but it was raining. Stopped on Sunday. The museum is small. Watched a video first. It was sad that bison were down to 500 or so in 1900. People shot them for fun. Now due to conservation efforts the population is 400,000-500,000. We came from Medora where we saw some very close to the car. They are beautiful. The museum had a model of plastic anatomy parts of the Buffalo, a taxidermied stuffed white Buffalo, adult Buffalo and calf. Also a small gift shop. The world's tallest Buffalo is free and not part of museum. You can see it from the outside. $8 admission fee. read more

The National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown, ND, is well worth visiting. You'll see and learn more about buffaloes than you've ever known before... and you'll be glad to know it all! The place is busy! My review is for the gift shop only, as my husband and I were literally moving cross-country and had our dogs in the car. I loved the gift shop and am so happy we saw the "World's Largest Buffalo" and decided to stop and check out the surrounding area. The gift shop is pretty big with a variety of items-locally made soap, buffalo souvenirs (stuffed animals and wood carvings,) teas, keychains, postcards. Pretty reasonable prices too. Be sure to also see the World's Largest Buffalo and the surrounding mock Wild West town. I assume this area is open in the summer-saw things for the kiddies. Looks like a great family activity or school field trip. Would like to come back one day and see the museum, and the white buffalo! read more

So I did not check out the museum, we were mid road trip and short on time before we had to stop for the night but the World's Largest Buffalo statue was a great road side gem and there was an extremely friendly lady who came up and spoke with me awhile about buffalo and the rare white buffalo that they have and that had passed on from here. It was a neat stop if you are into buffalo or world's largest things. There were clean, free restrooms and it was not too far from I-94 either. read more

The museum is way over priced for what you actually get to experience!! Did not see even 1 live Buffalo! A couple stuffed buffalos but not a live 1. The village & worlds largest buffalo are free, so just go to those and skip the museum. Wish that's what we would have done. It was on our way to somewhere else so no big deal, but I would never recommend going out of your way to see the museum! Again the Worlds Largest Buffalo is cool and free but that's it in my option. read more

It seems like we're lumping all of Frontier Village (which definitely is one of the coolest things in an otherwise mostly miserable state) in with this review and since it's in the same area, why not? I used to make a yearly pilgrimage to the World Largest Buffalo after a drunken tradition started in high school years. Now, my co-conspirator dropped off and so I wound up having to do it alone, but every year I would make the trek and go hang out at the sign, smoke a few cigarettes and have an extended pit stop, all the while trying to figure out a way to free-climb the huge buffalo. That thing was and is truly a marvel and I've enjoyed it ever since. Gone now are the glory days of hopping the fence at night that went to the buffalo pasture to see what they were up to and it's been a while since I've taken the route that leads me through Jamestown (no thanks to the fracking mess in the Western part of this wretched state), but no doubt it's still as glorious now as ever. Frontier Village is also a fun little jaunt, if you're into older historical buildings. If you live in the area, definitely go there. If you don't but happen to find yourself in the state for some perverse reason, it's worth the drive, but nostalgia aside, I certainly wouldn't venture to North Dakota just for this. read more

The National Buffalo Museum is a small but interesting and informative museum about the history, destruction, and eventual protection (thankfully) of the Great American Bison. There are buffalo (American bison) herds in many western states but few, if any, ever had a white buffalo. The one here died but you can still see it in the museum - along with various other exhibits of interest - or you can just shop in their gift store. I liked their gag gifts, like: canned buffalo, buffalo poop, buffalo chips, etc. Outside is a small herd of buffalo in a field - and a short walk away is the world's largest buffalo (statue). read more

Today I was venturing East on 94 towards Minnesota. My condolences/utmost respect if you live off 94 in North Dakota. I don't know how you do it. What do you do for fun? In 1993, I saw the World's Largest Buffalo at the National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown, ND. Standing 26 feet and weighing 60 tons, it's an impressive sight. I found out about it while viewing Salem Sue in New Salem, ND. Someone said "Have you seen the Buffalo yet?". Traveling farther East on Interstate 94 I finally did see the Buffalo. We stopped here for a roadside break during a long day of driving. The buffalo museum was not worth the money, don't bother. Do bother with checking out the old buildings and the massive cement buffalo. If you are expecting to see the albino buffalo, don't be upset if you don't. They only have one now and the roaming area is large and has a few clusters of trees for him to hide. We were not happy that the main reason for the existence of this place is not visible all the time. Seems like a simple change to the fence configuration would allow adequate roaming and a positive viewing experience. At least we got to stretch our legs and get some ice cream at the store. read more

I would give it 0 stars but I can't. 1. I had been DREAMING of visiting for months during my spring break. Who goes north for spring break? Me. Why? To see a huge buffalo. 2. It was closed on Sunday, yeah yeah, everything is closed on Sunday in Nodak you say. My tour guide told me she had, "Never seen the gate closed before." She just confirmed as I write this, "I haven't." And she lived here. 3. The best part was the sign that read "Feed the B." I'm assuming the B was the buffalo. However there were two buffali, so the sign should have read "Feed the B's." The aforementioned B's were in a pen and wanted to charge me. The female was distressed and continually walked into the barbed wire, trying to find a way out of the pen. One of the B's put on a poop show. Is this how they greet their guests? 4. Dakota Thunder Jr. (the mascot) was not present. By the looks of the brochure, he is amazing. 5. I wish the 4th white buffalo would just be born already. This is how bad my experience was. 6. No big deal right? You can see the giant buffalo from the gates. WRONG. There is a giant hill that blocks all buffalo viewing if the gates are closed.
