I actually love this place-it's one of my favorite places to go for fun! I always come here for ice skating, even if I had never tried the bumper cars I find this place great. Great for little ones because they have the little steering cars! I'm not sure what they're called, but they do have a penguin version which is adorable and good for kids. We came here for bumper cars and ice and this was our first ever experience! I will say I feel like it is very much over price considering you pay $15 and only get 10 minutes in prior to booking. I was not aware nor was it mentioned that you only have a small area. The reason I mention this is because the staff does warn you several times not to cross a certain barrier which can happen due to the nature of the event and if you do, there could be a possible lawsuit, so I was very worried about the kids crossing that line, since it was a very tiny area, and very easy to do so on the other side of that line or other people, ice-skating, including children, so you really do have to be very very careful. I will say besides this, it was a great experience. The staff was very friendly. They took photos of my family and I, with all of us in the bumper cars and although they started late, they did give us a few extra minutes for the inconvenience. I highly recommend at least doing this one's with your family. We laughed the entire time, and it was a great experience to do together. read more

I usually have a great time at Steinberg. Tonight I had to change skate 3 times and never got skates that were sharp enough to be usable. After the third time someone FINALLY told me the sharpener was broken and that actually all their skates were basically dull. My other friends and similar issues and there were noticeably more falls. Staff members on the rink were also careless...chatting with friends instead of focusing on patrons. I was disappointed with overall safety, and felt like I should have been informed before a non-refundable purchase. read more

I'm not a huge fan of winter sports, but I got talked into ice skating. No regrets though, since it turned out to be wholesome and fun. Steinberg is located on the East end of Forest Park and is a pretty decent sized outdoor rink. There is a large crowd on the Saturday night that I went, but other than the area near the entrance, it didn't feel too congested. The trees are lit and the indoor area is decorated with Christmas lightings. Against the backdrop of the city, its quite the romantic experience, perfect for a date or a group or family outing. There is only one Zamboni, so it takes a while to clear the rink once a hour, so take a breather on the bench or warm up by the fire pit. **PRO TIP 1: BRING CASH. ATM is available. I'm surprised that an establishment like this still doesn't accept cards. It's $15 per person for admission + skate rental. **PRO TIP 2: HOCKEY vs FIGURE SKATES. Depending on your preferences, you can ask for one or the other. Hockey skates seem to be more steady and offer more ankle support, so I'd go for those for beginners like me. We have been come to Steinberg for over 20 years, every year around Christmas . It has gone downhill since Covid however this year was absolute abomination. The once wonderful staff no longer cares. There were teenagers walking around on the ice and fighting. The skate guard skated right by them and didn't say a word. They couldn't work the Zamboni properly so they also did not resurface the ice. It was actually dangerous for everyone due to the complete failure of the entire staff. It was sad to see such a wonderful Saint Louis landmark is such disarray. I sincerely hope they fix it. We won't be continuing the tradition, too many years in a row where it just keeps getting worse. read more

Worst ice skating experience. The moment I stepped on the ice I immediately realized my skates were completely dull. They couldn't dig into the ice, instead they just slid around which is NOT what ice skates are supposed to do. (Believe me, I've played ice hockey). I later found out that Steinberg Ice Skating Rink doesn't even sharpen their rental skates, so they will inevitably be dull. Because of this oversight, I barely skated at all. Avoid. read more

Pretty place and fun to skate! This was my first time skating and I will definitely be coming back! It was $10 general admission and $6 for skates so not too expensive but not the cheapest. They resurfaced the ice at least once while I was there and I was there for around 2 hours. They also have little skate assist things if you need help which is great. Had a decent time once we got on the ice but the staff members we encountered beforehand were rude; specifically at the skates pick-up. The employee was extremely condescending to the couple in front of us when they asked him a question. When it was our turn he slammed down our skates on the table and didn't say a word. Once we got on the ice my partner noticed his one of his skates was having issues, but we were scared to go back and trade for another pair. We loved it as always. Due to shortages everywhere from covid----I'd recommend buying tickets in advance to skip the long line as described in previous reviews. Everywhere is short staffed so i experienced if you treat the staff with kindness and respect it's is definitely reciprocated. I'd also bring cash and credit as they have separate lines for each. We did the 630 skate time and it was awesome. Glad we could make some memories. In covid times and in times in general, don't forget to be patient and kind. It goes a long way. Steinberg skating rink is the perfect place to get a fun workout in while practicing your twirls and loop-dee-loos. The rink has a cafe where you can get hot foods like pizza, hots, hamburgers, chicken tenders, toasted ravioli and wings. There is also a concession stand with popcorn, boxed candy, pretzels, nachos, funnel cakes, and shaved ice. Decent beverage selection including hot chocolate, Gatorade, domestic and imported beer, and wine by the glass or bottle. Perfect spot for date night. Romantic lighting at night, and a bonfire. Don't worry if you've never skated before, there will be plenty of newbies holding the railing. With a little practice, you'll be zooming around the rink like a boss. COVID review. We were able to make it on their last day of skating for the season. We had heard the lines were crazy thus we have avoided Steinberg during COVID but we wanted to give it a shot since it had been raining. Weather was in the 40's, rain clouds parted and we had a wonderful 2.5 hours of skating. There was a lot of water on the rink but that really didn't bother us unless you fell of course. No indoor service. The cafe was open with drinks and some food. Skate rentals are.... skate rentals. Definitely not new skates but mostly "hockey" style skates currently. Cost is OK. You do need to pay even if you don't skate. $10 admission $8 for rentals. They do have a nice wood fire going in the corner of the rink. I spent plenty of time sitting there absorbing the park and watching everyone enjoy some semblance of normalcy for a few hours. Everyone was wearing masks but hey we are outside and 6 feet apart. Overall a great experience. Only complaint is the front staff should have been more courteous. Some newer skates would be welcome but understand there is always a cost! There are weird bumper cars on one side of the rink. They are an eyesore and take up so much skating real estate. The mats look like they started laying them from the building out to the rink, once you get to the rink fence there are no mats. So if you decide to sit down and rest you will ruin your skate blades against the concrete. The mats do not sit flush in many places. They didn't even bother to cover the entire fire pit in mats, just half of it and again.. you'll ruin your blades on the concrete. Steinburg use to be festive, with so many lights put up. Now, there are no lights. Not even the string light above the rink. Disappointing, especially for a festive Thanksgiving night. I can't tell who the staff is. The workers on the ice looked just like the people skating. They should wear a vest or something so I know who to go to in case of an emergency. They don't resurface the ice enough, only once in the 3 hours we were there, a lot of time spent skating in slush. And when they do, it takes over 30 minutes. Steinburg use to be the gem of the city, and now it is just.. disappointing. The new management needs to make some changes, otherwise they will lose the customers that came back to Steinburg again and again in the past. read more

where do iI start? the condition of the ice was horrible. it was hard to skate and didn't feel safe, forget fun. the bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. the fire in the fire pit was practically nonexistent---I overheard a customer ask an employee if she could tend it for them. when i approached an employee about resurfacing ice, she said they were really busy...taking more people's money, that is. but what about the experience of the customers who already paid you (and in our case, was even paying a babysitter to be there)?! so lousy. mental note to self, never come to this rink again. read more

My ankles are still hurting from my skates, but I loved every minute I spent last weekend at Steinberg Skating Rink! After a few years off the ice I was pretty embarrassing to watch during the first few minutes, but finally got the hang of it, and even busted out a few "tricks." (My definition of tricks is balancing on one foot for a few seconds.) Skating rinks are perfect for the holiday season, but I do think this one could be a little more jazzed up. Christmas music was playing, but it was pretty low and had a bit of a static sound coming in. I was there during the day... wondering if it's lit up with lights at night? There was a good mix of people there ranging from pretty tiny to pretty old. You know how every skating rink (ice or regular) has that ONE old guy in tight pants who feels like he needs to show off and out-skate all the kids? Oh yeah. He was there, and it made the experience that much more enjoyable for me. He had his iPod in and spent an hour weaving in and out of unsuspecting tots. Awesome. Parking was pretty easy in Forest Park, only had to walk about three minutes to get there. Definitely remember a good pair of socks, some gloves, and whatever other winter gear you have. This is the place to ice skate in St Louis for two reasons: great location and great hours. This rink is located in beautiful Forest Park. The air is fresh, the trees are green, and BRRRR it is cold, so bundle up before you go. Why concern yourself with skating schedules at other rinks where there may be hockey teams or figure skaters practicing, when this place is open only for recreation and the hours are great (open until Midnight on Friday and Saturday). The speakers blast soft rock favorites, and they have a big fire pit in the corner for you to warm up to. There is also a cafe where you can defrost and get some hot chocolate. Rentals are $3 and $6.50 for admission. I wish the skates were a little sharper and I wish they had 1/2 sizes, so that the skates would fit a little better. read more

Not bad. Great place to go if you're bored on a Monday night (which we were) and nothing else is open and you don't want to go to a bar or if you have underage people with you. It was nearly empty at off-peak hours which made skating more pleasant, and the rink is pretty big. CASH ONLY so bring $12 for admission and skate rental together. The skates were in pretty decent condition. You have to give them your shoes in exchange for the skates. And in case you forget or something, definitely wear socks. It's a necessity. Not that the skates were dirty or anything, but you're going to be uncomfortable if you don't. Lockers are 75 cents for the smaller ones and there is a change machine if you only have dollar bills. Christmas lights and Christmas music were pretty cute too. There's plenty of areas to sit and change your shoes, and there's a fire pit next to the rink (no cooking s'mores allowed unfortunately) and you CAN keep your skates on since it's surrounded by rubber matting which is a huge plus, especially once the Zamboni comes out and you all get kicked off the ice. Something else you can do if the Zamboni has kicked you off is play all the arcade games in the waiting/locker area, or go in the cafe (although I didn't do that so this review does not include the cafe). read more

This was my first visit and what a fun way to ring in the New Year..... This is a cash only place. $7 to get in and $5 for skate rentals. On NYE they had a buffet for $25 appetizers, beer and wine and hot chocolate. It was tricking trying to hold a drink while walking on skates....... The food was okay, very very friendly bartender. The wine selection was decent, plus they have about 20 different beers to try. The skating was fun, but not for me. The experience is great but don't reserve and pre pay online. last year we booked bumper cars which were canceled due to lightening and we did not receive a refund. We booked ice skating today and were told there was too much water on the ice for our reservation time. I was provided the email to the general manager to request a refund. The response from my request was no refund but we could reschedule. They only have a week and a half left of the operating season. Wish this donation was tax deductible at least. read more

Steinberg is a tradition we look forward to year after year. Of course it was very different this year because of the pandemic we are in. They did a great job of putting safety measures in place and reminding patrons of them especially how to PROPERLY wear a mask. The lines were super long because of limited admission and the wait was cold but we understood the diligence to keep people safe while still being able to offer being open. It was unfortunate to be greeted at the ticket window by a very grouchy worker after surviving the two hour wait. We had a group of 16 and he yelled at or was snarky to at least half of us. This should not be the face of Steinberg as this is a tradition for so many and to be greeted this way was very disappointing. We were able to shake it off and enjoy our visit thankfully but it definitely put a hint of displeasure in our visit. read more

Summer at the rink is amazing! Check it out for shuffleboard. We had a blast and can't wait to go back. The area is so cute and totally transformed. A family can enjoy a lovely day in Forest Park, and can join a league. We love this place. Just a note, did not try the food or bar attached to the rink so this is strictly having to do with the skating. Steinberg is a nice place to visit, although maybe only sparingly. The decoration is very festive, there's nice lighting and plenty of Christmas trees, there's a big fire to warm yourself and visit at. It's a nice place to hang out and do something that you can only do in winter. It could get a tad expensive, especially if you make more than a couple trips and have to rent skates, but I think you should expect that. It's also really not bad for a couple of trips per winter. The only negatives I can really find are things that go hand in hand. First comes the crowd. It's a winter tradition here, and I'm sure some days are better than others, but at times there was hardly any open ice to skate. And be careful that you don't fall/skate into someone who has fallen, lots of skate blades around fingers! The second negative, most likely because of the crowd, is the ice got really torn up. They use the Zamboni to clear the ice every so often, but it only helps for about one lap and the ruts and holes start coming back out. It's a fun place to go. Obviously the negatives aren't that bad, but good to know. Would definitely go back here. read more

Considered stepping out of my comfort zone and trying an activity I normally wouldn't do. After a few days encouragement by a lady friend I bite the bullet and decide to go ice skating. Upon arrival I pay the $14 for entrance and skate rental. After putting on the skates I quickly discern that fundamental laws of physics and my own particular combination of awkwardness (I'm a tad under 6'5, slewfooted, clumsy and massive by all general human standards) have conspired to make ice skating a far more risky proposition than was worth taking. I wasn't able to make the walk out of the building entrance towards the rink, let alone attempt to skate. So rather than risk serious bodily harm I make an executive decision to call an audible on the play and press the eject button on this endeavor. 5 minutes tops had elapsed from the time I paid for skate rental and return, but I was refused even a partial refund. So all things considered I paid $14 bucks to try on a pair of skates for a couple of minutes, despite not even going 10 feet from the counter and immediately returning the skates. Rules are rules I get it, but an a terrible customer service experience in all. Left the place feeling decidedly more Grinch-like as I can't help but feel I had been thoroughly ripped off. Rink is lovely, and the ice is very nice. But to start, the guy working the front desk was beyond rude. I went to pay and pulled out card and he says cash only. He was then rude when I asked where an atm. I ask if he is able to do change or if it needs to be exact and he rudely gives me his answer saying he knows how to count change, all I wanted to know is if I needed to be exact. Then he stands there while I hand him the bills roles his eyes at me, and goes to get my change and is counting them out loud and being overall very rude. Then I say hey, I was just asking a question and trying to make it easier for you, and he grunts and that was it. Lastly the music was from the 60s and nothing against it, but it didn't fit the atmosphere or the age group that was there at all. I went to Steinberg twice this past winter. It's a decent size for the number of people that go there. At night, it can be a cute little romantic spot. They play soft music and you can smell burning wood from the fire pit. Ahhh. :) The only downside... Since it's so big, it takes them a while to resurface the ice. Steinberg goes hand in hand with a classic winter in St. Louis. If you haven't been, you definitely need to go. I've been a few times over the years, and it's a pretty fun experience with the right people. Why do I say that? Because if you're coming on a Saturday night, be prepared to wait in line for about an hour. Not kidding. Even if you get there at 9:30 pm... Still the same. So make sure you bring some good friends to make the time fly by. If not, the people watching is almost better than at the mall! Make sure you bring cash!! To rent skates, and the ticket I believe it's 12 dollars all together a person. They also sell some concessions, no outside food/drink. Parking sucks if you come on the weekend, but during the week it isn't too bad. I am easily the worlds worst ice skater. Which is a running joke because I'm Russian, love hockey, even had ice skating lessons, but I still can't skate for the life of me. Thankfully, I have the sweetest boyfriend in the world who let me death grip onto his arm the whole time. All in all, get out there, dress warm, and you're in for a St. Louis treat! read more
