I took this overnight cruise line from London to Amsterdam and was extremely pleased. The prices were extremely reasonable. The rooms were great- beds a bit stiff... but I had no issues sleeping. Very clean and great service. Food was sub-par. If I had to do it over, I would definitely have eaten before getting on this cruise line- and stuck to beer while on it. I would definitely use their cruise line again.

What a lovely trip! We were travelling from Harwich in the UK and the departure at Rotterdam in Amsterdam was super easy in our car. Once you exited, the cars got into two lines (left for non-EU and right for EU); we passed Border Control, and then found our exit of the port and were on our way to Amsterdam. The line for customs moved quickly and it was just such a different and more comfortable and better process than flying!! (I'm hoping this ease and convenience will remain in place, even after Brexit!) There was an announcement on board the ship in English and Dutch languages, for passenger to leave their cabins about ~30 mins before departure. This was to allow the staff to clean cabins for the folks coming on board in Rotterdam for their overnight journey to the UK, and so my mum, brother, and I spent a nice time in the lounge, and watched our ship entering the Port, with a beautiful view of the sun setting into the sea. Absolutely recommend experiencing using the Stena Lines Ferry option, if you to need to travel from England to the Netherlands Yelp 30/ 2019 read more
What better way to conclude our European tour than to return to United Kingdom via the Stena Line from Hoek van Holland on the overnight ferry. I was impressed with this company from the moment I booked it online to the actual trip experience. My family and friends could not believe that it was actually a ferry not a cruise ship. Upon boarding, we were lead to our cabin and greeted with complementary bottle of red wine to enjoy while getting ready for our dinner. Our cabin was surprisingly roomy for two people and was equipped with television, WiFi, work table, spacious bathroom and oversized port hole window behind our bed. There were two fine dining restaurants and we chose the set menu which didn't break the bank. the dishes are freshly cooked and plated really well. In addition to a couple of bars, they also have Money Changer, Movie Theater and play room for all ages to enjoy. I have no words for how wonderful my experience with Stena Line was. This is definitely something one has to consider when travelling from Amsterdam to United Kingdom. Its comfortable, yet affordable and in style! read more
An excellent option if you're doing the overnight from London to Amsterdam, I just wish the instructions were a little more clear on which train to take. Continuing our adventures through Europe, my girlfriend and I booked passage on the Stena Line's Rail & Sail from London to Amsterdam overnight. The ticket includes "rail from London to the coast, (2) the overnight boar ride, and (3) rail from the coast to Amsterdam. Unfortunately, the website doesn't take American credit cards for some reason, so I had to give them a call in order to book, which went very smoothly (turns out English accents are difficult to understand over the phone). Immensely convenient, the all-in-one ticket if for any train from London to the coast and from the coast to Amsterdam. This was source of immense confusion for us as to which train to take - fortunately the employees at Liverpool station were very helpful and told us which train to pick up (we just flashed the ticket at the turnstile and we were let in by the rail station employee on the side). The train ride was a commuter train that ends at Harwich. After getting to Harwich, just follow the crowd to the Stena line processing. If you can try to get in front of everyone, as processing can take a long time since they had only one (then alter two) people processing. We then hopped on a tram that took us to the boat. The accommodations were excellent - we got a cheaper inside cabin with a bunk bed, TV (with a special channel that shows all the pets in the hold ), and shower. The beds were surprisingly comfortable and we didn't even feel like we were on the water. Wake up call is 6AM, and they're pretty efficient getting everyone off the boat. Here we encountered major confusion about our train again re: which one we should be taking. Make sure you scan your ticket on the way to tracks - there will be a post thingy outside along the path. If you arrive on time, the train you take will be the next one coming. We probably over-complicated the whole thing, but it wasn't entirely straightforward, and not a lot of English signs in Holland. Once you find the train it's easy to get to Amsterdam. Overall, I would definitely do Stena Line again, and now that I know what I'm doing I won't be as stressed. I highly recommend, just don't be afraid to ask some questions so you don't end up in another part of Europe. read more

Terrific and surprising option for travel between London and the Netherlands, and beyond. We made the trip overnight, which I recommend. (You can make the most of your vacation time on both ends, as well as save on lodging for the night.) The crossing was mostly calm. The cabin was clean, and perfectly designed for convenience in tight quarters. The public areas are nicely maintained and offer a lot of space for working, socializing, and just hanging out. The wifi was the only real disappointment, so marginal as to be almost useless, and not available in our cabin at all. We did not eat in either restaurant, but neither looked particularly impressive. One of the nicest things about a ferry crossing was how civilized it felt, compared with air travel. The Stena agents in Hoek van Holland were genuinely friendly and attentive. The ease of transfers from/to trains cannot be overstated, and going through Immigration is a completely different experience than what you'll endure at Heathrow. The only thing that might give you pause is the amount of walking required to access the ship. The gangway is a very long walk, and anyone without rolling luggage is going to suffer. On the U.K. side, the gangway was completely inoperable, so we had to walk down multiple flights of steps to board a shuttle bus that drove us ashore. They handled this glitch very professionally, and I'm sure assistance is available for anyone who needs it. Still, travelers with a lot of luggage had a tough time of it. read more
London to mainland Northern Europe? Stena Line is a great way to do it! And it's a great cost option as well. We go a train from London to Harwich, the Stena Line to Hoek van Holland, and then another train over to Berlin...all for £249 return!! We have a dog, so it makes it hard to get them around Europe, though Stena Line has a special area where you can leave them happy and content! The whole trip is so relaxing. There is massive public areas, a blockbuster movie cinema AND even a massage chairs!! People have said it's best to do the overnight trip. It depends. If you get the overnight, you MUST book accommodation, which can add the cost up a lot! As there's great internet on the ship, I preferred to save the money, read my kindle and catrch-up on some emails looking over the great water view ;-) I would recommend also taking your own food...not that the food is terrible (there's two restaurants, one sort of okay (3 starts) and the second is really bad (1 star), it's just that it's rather expensive. After going by Sena Line, you'd wonder why you went by plane ever again :-) read more

This is a great overnight trip from London to Amsterdam. There were a few boarding hassles (one ticket agent in London for a long line of people, and a bus to take you to the ferry in lieu of a gangplank), so beware that, if you have a lot of luggage, actually getting on and off the ferry itself might be annoying and cumbersome. But once you're on board, man oh man. My boyfriend and I booked a Captain's class cabin, where we had free wine and beer (Heineken and not bad wine at all) and two free mini-bottles of Cava. It was the perfect amount of pampering, and our room was beautiful and well-stocked. The bathroom was clean, the shower great, the TV just what was needed, and the beds equipped with nightlights and nooks for reading materials. Very well-designed. The breakfast buffet is quite good; much better than what we expected. Definitely try the scrambled eggs. The one thing I would suggest to Stena, aside from a providing smoother boarding experience in London, is to increase its travel time. What, you say? Well, we didn't get on board until 10:00, at which point we weren't going to be availing ourselves of Stena's dining opportunities. We wished for more time to enjoy our cabin and amenities, but had to get to sleep quickly so as to get up and eat breakfast in time (you lose an hour going to the Netherlands). Having passengers be able to board as early as 6:00 p.m. and then disembark as late as 9:00 a.m. would give everyone more time to enjoy the trip, use more of the amenities of the ferry, and get more out of the experience. read more

I would recommend the rail and sail overnight service from London to Amsterdam to anyone making the trip. It's like a mini cruise ship with great amenities and state room. Really enjoyed the experience. read more

I had the most horrific travel experience of my life with Stena Line. My sister and I booked a ticket from Dublin to Holyhead for an 8:20am ferry. We were flying in from New York and arrived in time to rush over the port. We arrived approximately thirty minutes before departure but had difficulties finding the check-in since the terminal building was dark for someone looking from outside. We finally entered at 8am and were told we would not be allowed to board despite the fact that the sign prominently displayed outside flashed the message that boarding for the 8:20 ferry was open. I asked and almost begged to be let on and explained that we had booked round trip train tickets and an Airbnb and paid for our activities in London which all would be a loss if we were not allowed on. One of the employees, a man by the name of Owen, insisted that we would it be allowed to board and that, despite being only 4 minutes past the hour, we were over 20 minutes late. He was smirking, mind you, when I pleaded that he reconsider and instead offered that another ferry copy working 15 minutes down the way at he next terminal had a ferry leaving at 9 which would cost us 40 Euro and be a fast ferry. Neither of these things turned out to be true. By the time we arrived at the next terminal (by foot because we had sent away our taxi) the other ferry was already leaving port and the next ferry was at 9 PM. The Stena Line ferry, the one we were supposed to have boarded, was still at port. We rushed back to the Stena terminal to plead our case again but by the time we walked the 15 minutes back to the terminal the ferry had left. I demanded an explanation as to why we had been misled to think that the other ferry company would be available, why the sign outside had only just changed to say that boarding was closed, and what would be done to compensate for our ill treatment. Owen, who had been so glad to keep us from boarding and, I'm sure now, intentionally misled us into leaving by essentially waving us off with a flippant "you'll want to be going now" remained behind his desk in the corner while one of the other employees told us that "boarding was still opened for vehicles only" (so if we had been in a car we would have been allowed to board?) and that, inexplicably given what she had just told me, we couldn't have been let on because the loading bay was being lifted when we arrived at 8am (how exactly were the vehicles being loaded if that was the case?). All of this did not make sense because Owen had, so graciously, informed us that he had waited 10 minutes past the 30 minutes prior to boarding mark (until 8am) to let the ferry crew knew that they should go ahead without us. So in 4 minutes, while we explained our situation to Owen (that we had been lost outside the check-in Dock because the building was otherwise dark, that we would lose significant sums of we weren't allowed on, that we had traveled from the airport to the docks) the feet crew had pulled up the ramp so much that we could not board even when we noted that it was 20 more minutes before the ferry left? They offered to change our ticket to a 3pm ferry but kept our return trip as it was which meant that we would have arrived in London at 12am and would need to return the following day at 1pm. This also would have required that we change our train tickets which would have cost us 44 euro per ticket for both our outboard and return tickets to cancel and rebook. New fares for two people on the train would have cost us 189 euro per person per trip. Meaning would would have ultimately spent close to 800 euro to make the necessary changes to get to London simply to be in the city for a handful of hours. We were flustered to say the least and when we called the company to complain on the spot the customer service line offered nothing but to reimburse us our fate minus 40 euro for their troubles because we were "choosing to cancel our tickets." No one offered an apology or to help. We lost, all told, over $450 USD because of the callousness of the Stena Line employees. I've had better experiences at airports where employees have held planes for those who are running late and offered calls. This all did not add up and I intend to file a complaint with Stena Line and with the Irish equivalent of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for damages and distress caused. I'm writing this to let others know what kind of customer service Stena Line provides and the completely inconsiderate and, as another Irish fellow we met characterized it, disgraceful way in which we were treated. I travel widely and this has really been the worst trip I've ever taken. I couldn't believe that they would treat two young women traveling alone in a foreign country in this way. read more
