It's accessible from the small parking area next to the east entrance of the Bluff Trail at Chimney Bluff State Park. It's a wild beach so it does not have any restroom facilities or park benches. We walked along the right side to find a shaded area under a tree, but the area to the left has fewer trees. As it's next to a state park, be sure to clean up and remove any trash that you bring for picnics. Although the views of Lake Ontario and the shoreline are lovely at this location, one downside of visiting in mid-July is the constant presence of horse flies and other insects (be sure to bring bug repellent). One other minus is that the lakeshore is full of small and medium sized rocks (instead of fine-grained sand), so it's painful to walk barefoot along the lake shore bottom unless you have water shoes. That said, many locals seemed just fine with stepping on stones.

Twice now we've been when LARGE groups from schools have been there and it is absolutely chaos. I checked the website before traveling the hour to get there and nothing was mentioned. It was so loud when we entered I couldn't hear anything the girl at the register said. There were many chaperones but no one was actually managing the kids. The place is not that large and it was wild. My granddaughter is 3 1/2 and could barely maneuver around. She had toys taken out of her hand by the older, larger kiddos and you couldn't hear a thing it was so loud. I did talk to a worker from the museum and asked if there's a place to find a schedule and she kind of brushed me off. I gave 3 stars because if you go on a "normal" day it's great for younger kids.

We arrived on a Monday morning, left for lunch, and returned for more play until the museum closed at 4PM. The museum is technically two stories, although the first floor mainly consists of the admissions desk, a small gift shop, and a water play station. Waterproof smocks or covers would have been nice since my son's shirt did get quite wet. There were boats, fishing rods, and cascading channels of water for various kinds of water play. This was a hit with both of my toddlers. The second floor had much more activities. From large and small foam blocks, Magnatiles, a scarf suction pipe/chute, books, light tables, brite light pegs, and a mini spiral climbing structure, to a dentist's office, pizza and salad restaurant, fire truck, tree house, farmers market, farm, toilet to teach plumbing, aluminum recycling, color wheel, and much more, there was a lot for kids of all ages to explore. There was also a small sectioned-off area for 0-2 infants and pre-walkers. The space hosts birthday parties as well as STEM classes. The staff were lovely. We were given a stamp in our hands before we took a break for lunch so that we could re-enter for free that same day. The only complaint I have is that there was less in the way of offering arts and crafts or even free-form drawing. We did not see any parking lot, but took advantage of free 2-hour street parking. This is definitely a great spot for families with young kids in Oswego.

So the Terrible Trump administration shut down the government and Montezuma National Wildlife…read moreRefuge was closed (a wise choice, given all the trashing happening to some national parks) when I wanted to visit - so I decided to instead to check out the Northern side of Montezuma Wetlands Complex (north of I-90) run by the NY state and Audubon Center - and boy am I glad I did! Before I came here, I did not know that this whole area was a large wetland complex, and one that's relatively well preserved by patches of federal, state and Audubon Center protections. There are myriads of water ways in the area some even creating an "island" ...and many hiking trails ... Alyssa at the Visitor Center and her cute dog Addie were wonderful in explaining and answering all my questions. It is a flat hike all around; but I realized wetland hiking offers something different from mountain hiking - I saw many birds and traces of wildlife on the trails - and the trails were very, very pretty. Even when I did not see any birds, I could hear them nearby ... a lot of them. Abundance of birds and wildlife reminded me of Everglade National Park in Florida. I visited during the broad daylight, and spend most of the day exploring the area, and I saw trumpeter swans, blue heron, geese flying over .... and also chickadees, golden finches, and woodpeckers near the shrubs with winter berries and feeders near the Visitor Center. I saw interesting scats of coyotes or fox filled with furs of their victim dinners, and lots of goose scats, too! Another highlight of my visit was meeting with a muskrat on the trail! I did not know what it was and I had to ID when I get home - a North American native rodent with powerful tail that propel them in water ... a "cousin of beaver"! Trees standing in water reminded me of Congaree National Park in South Carolina (although there the trees you see there are cypress trees, and the one I saw here was .. I believe mostly oak trees ... please correct me if I'm wrong - I visited in January and leaves were all gone ... what I saw on the ground seemed mostly oak ... ). I felt the whole area should be protected federally and made into a national park or national wildlife refuge, but I imagine there must be a long history of struggles for preservation and public education ... in the nearby town of Savannah, I saw one house with many colorful placards complaining about wetlands ... I think it is truly very sad that some people are not proud of this tremendous natural heritage! The visitor Center was build in 2006 (or around that time - speaking from memory of an exhibit - so not exact) - after nearly a decade in use, I saw some of the exhibit needed updates, dusting, and clean-up - some of the tanks did not have any animals in it but some had live animals and I felt they could be returned to outside .... and instead just have photographs or videos of these animals will be great. Also, the telephone guide for the trails for the Audubon Center was not working! I hope the Center will update and fix them soon. There are many events sponsored by the center such as guided snowshoe hikes and birding tours. It sounds all very interesting. I hope more people will come visit the area and support this amazing conservation initiative!

Lovely beach at the end of Sodus Point, the park has a large parking lot, a big covered picnic…read moregazebo and a playground. A nice walk on the pier out to the lighthouse though an awful lot of small flying insects. Of course, the lighthouse is accessible from here too. These two lighthouses protect Sodus Bay, the largest natural harbor on Lake Ontario. This light was first established in 1858, the new lighthouse was replaced in 1938 with this 51 foot tall structure. The view over Lake Ontario is fabulous, especially this early in the morning. Nice little museum. A little pricey like everything around here. Not too much to look at other…read morethan climbing to the top. A little claustrophobic at the top. Wouldn't want to do it if there were other groups.
