    After an absolutely awful series of events involving UVM schedulers at UVM Ortho & UVM Pain Clinic,…read moreI received a $678 bill for a procedure at the pain clinic. An entire month later, I received another unexpected bill for the SAME procedure for another $1663.52. I am a self-pay patient, meaning I have no health insurance. I fully believed the first bill to be the cost of the procedure & thought that to be reasonable. After receiving the second bill, I thought this was some sort of error, but upon calling the billing dept, learned they expected this to be paid as well. I spent a month trying to get someone to take care of this & look into this for me & kept getting tossed around until finally someone connected me with the Patient & Family Advocacy dept. I spoke with a rep here, explained my entire story (too long to type here, but it's insane) - she was shocked by what I had been through, and the negligence of the people answering the phones/scheduling, and ultimately what she was most disturbed about was that UVM touts their "Price Transparency" literally everywhere throughout their offices...and yet, I was NEVER given a price for my procedures, nor was I directed to their websites to look into pricing. From the time I spoke with the person at UVM who set up my online chart, to the appt with the Ortho dr, to the appt at the Pain Clinic...all the people I interacted with - especially the check-in desks, etc - not one of these people directed me to information about what this would cost me. As I sat at the desk checking in for my pain clinic appt, I looked to my side & there was a giant sign about this Price Transparency policy at UVM. After speaking with a rep at the Patient Advocacy dept, she let me know that she would take this to the right people at UVM & try to have something done about this - in particular, hold them accountable for their lack of communication/providing info on pricing. I didn't hear back for about a month, until I received a letter in the mail from her yesterday. It states that she spoke with Michael, the pain clinic "leader" who, in short, says they did everything right throughout this entire process & too bad for me - I still owe for this enormous bill, despite their "transparency" policy. One of the things this rep said she would do for me would be to send me a copy of this transparency policy, which I still have not received. I believe they are absolutely skirting this issue because they are at fault & refuse to take any responsibility. I don't have health insurance for a reason - I can't afford it, and they knew that. If I had known the cost of this procedure, there is no way I would ever have elected to do it. In the letter that was sent to me, a link is provided to their website re: price transparency. It says "while this data shows price, it does not show what you will actually pay for your care." It goes on to say this is because "what you pay depends on your health insurance plan" and to get a true estimate of cost, visit your health insurance's website. Well, what about SELF-PAY PATIENTS? We depend DIRECTLY on UVM to provide us with our expected costs because we don't have insurance. This was a major fail for which they are refusing accountability. I would suggest avoiding UVM at all costs. Horrible service from start to finish.
