Lots of fabric! I need a 1/2 yard of two different types of fabrics for my intro sewing class. My only thoughts were that I was looking for fabrics that would go easily hrough a sewing machine for a beginner that was not too expensive. He brought me to "scraps." I found 4 yards (total) of two different fabrics I used to make this pillow (front and back). Please admire them! Per my sewing instructor, it was a good price! $30 + tax. Thanks for the help! Kevin was the best! As I was begrudgingly was driving to make the journey downtown for some lace, I last second called to see if Stern's carried any lace. Not only did I had a huge selection to choose from, but I also got inspired for upcoming projects from all the fun fabrics around me! Just want to address the bad reviews first. You can't rate a store because of a problem that should be taken up with the city. The reviews are on the business it's self not the the streets of LA county. I shop there all the time and never once had an issue. It's on a busy street with lots of people around, I don't know how anyone can feel threatened. The store owner Kevin is wonderful person with the absolute best fabric. He has the most variety out of any store At the best prices. He's 1/3 of the prices you'll see per yard at any other fabric store. I drop off my kid here at his moms. Been doing it for years. It's always been clean. For those of you who are complaining how dirty it was... that its not the normal. I spoke to the owner because he was frustrated that the week he was on vacation , with his family , it ended up like that. This guy is not at fault. Our city is not being taken care of. That includes business owners and to the homeless who are victims of the polices we have right now. Our government is not doing their jobs. So before you leave a nasty comment, take look around. I looked online to see where I could get my antique chair reupholstered and found Stern Draperies on Ventura. When I pulled up, I could not even get out of my car, because of all the homeless people gathered on the property and trash strewn everywhere. I was shocked to see this in Sherman Oaks. There were definitely people smoking something other than pot and guys urinating in the corner outside of the building. There was no way I was going to get out of my car with all of that going on. There were at least 10 people there that clearly needed mental health care and housing. This place did not look or feel safe for anyone to go into. I drove away and found another place that did a great job at a very fair price. read more

As many have said, a great find for those looking for a special fabric that's in stock on the roll for upholstery and draperies etc., and it is a good idea to check hours prior to your visit. If you're up for the challenge , you may get lucky and find exactly what you need . Nice selection of high end fabrics. I'm a buyer for tv set decorators, and I must say this gem of a store has been off my radar all these years. Kevin the owner is helpful and friendly and has a most unique stock of fabric. Lots of vintage 60s, 70s, and 80s, as well as contemporary... his stock is massive and looks a bit askew, but to the trained eye there is pure gold in here. Production / studio friendly... all the times you feel guilty about giving all your budget to a bigger named chain store, Stern's is the mom & pop we want to keep in business a long time. This place is awesome. I went here looking for swatches for a coach reupholstery project, after a pretty mediocre search on Melrose. This is a very well-stocked family-owned fabric shop. They'd actually gotten two new shipments when I got there, and were a little overwhelmed... only the owner, Kevin, was running the place (his assistant recently passed away, poor guy.) Despite having to man the phones and deal with the store, he was super nice, helpful and accommodating, and even climbed up to get to a distant roll to get me a swatch. I got at least seven good options at EXCELLENT prices (and the quality was high.) They've got basically anything you'd need for drapes or upholstery with wholesale prices. No need to schlep all the way over to Downtown where the parking sucks and the sales people give you the stinkeye when you can just get it here from Kevin! read more

I never realized Stern's was there before - apparently they just painted the exterior of the building blue and it caught my eye so I stopped in. I've been on the hunt for new drapes and received bid from another company that was ASTRONOMICAL. Kevin's pricing was less than half of the other company's bid. Kevin's shop is an adventure in itself - stacks and stacks of bolts of fabric in all weights, patterns and colors. I found the perfect materials for blackout roman shades for a bedroom and lined drapes for our living and dining room. Can't wait to see the final product! read more

So I live right behind Stern's Draperies and yes there were a few homeless guys setting up their belongings Only at night time. I went over and spoke to Kevin the owner in which he had no idea this was going on. This was all happening at night when the store was closed. Kevin INSTANTLY resolved this situation. I have gone here a few times and am done. Each time I go the parking lot is like a mini version of skid row. Homeless people , shopping carts, trash, all around the building. If I wanted that I would go to downtown LA. I will not go back here and unless you want to be confronted by homeless people arguing with each other (and you), I would stay away. read more

Excellent fabric store. Although I have not purchased any special, beautiful fabrics yet, I love going to this place. The selection is great and massive! It's fun to walk around through it all. The prices seem fair, and the owner is very helpful and friendly but not in your face and "salesman-like." I look forward to coming here when I have some more projects in mind. These are the nicest people probably in the world. I broke the cord in my draperies and Kevin was so polite and considerate about my feeling so badly, as he had fixed it several years ago. I am handicapped right now (really bad car accident - not my fault) and I couldn't close the drapes..up comes Dee to see what he can do -only a couple of hours after I spoke to Kevin - and what he does is/are perform miracles. The drapes are up, they slide as though they are on an electric glide and my faith in honest and capable merchants has been completely restored. They even told me that should I break the cord again, just call them, and they will be right back! So nice and oh yes the price, so very fair. Before you go anywhere else give Kevin a call you won't need to call anyone else. read more
