Love this place. My daughter wanted to get some fabric to make a shirt and she found this place and wanted to go. They have a huge variety of fabrics and you can probably spend a couple of hours looking around and finding different materials. The cost is pretty fair and the employees are so kind and helpful. The lady that helped us both times we went in was so sweet and she even went looking for a specific fabric design we were looking for and eventually found the perfect one. The only downside is parking is atrocious and just be resigned to the fact that you're going to spend $20 at one of the small lots and don't be fooled by the $3 parking because in tiny small print it says the first 15 minutes is $3 with a maximum parking fee for the day is $20. read more

Part of going downtown specifically this area is that you need to know that parking is about $20 (signs are deceiving) but I won't focus on that - it's not my first time here I somehow always end up in the same upper parking lot that I always get into. While in the area might as well check the stores. We went here specifically for fabrics. My son is into sewing right now so this place has a wide selection of different types of fabrics. They also have accessories. Are they cheaper - maybe/ maybe not but my son wanted to see fabrics so that's why we are here. He picked up some items and accessories he needs, we also got a roll of pattern paper and a yard of fabric he will use to "practice with" Service is easy - pick a fabric and bring it to the table and they'll cut it for you. Spent $80 on a bunch of stuff. Let's see if my son actually makes something out of it. He did enjoy looking and browsing over their fabrics and accessories. read more

I was unable to locate the fabric and accessories I was in need of and unfortunately the employees are not very helpful in assisting. This review is for the former Michael Levine's, now Fashion Deco Fabric Store on Maple Street. I drove down from Northern California specifically to revisit a place that holds a lot of nostalgia for me. As a fashion design student at Otis (back when the campus was nearby), Michael Levine's was a regular stop. Walking in, I was surprised to see the name had changed. The store was bought out not too long ago after closing for a period, and new owners reopened it, bringing back a small group of long-time employees. What really blew me away was the staff. The three people who helped me were faces I immediately recognized from the late 1990s. That's 30+ years of experience. They were just as kind, knowledgeable, and helpful as I remembered. These are people who truly know their craft and have dedicated much of their lives to this store, and it shows in how they help customers. I ended up buying a ton of items, partly to support the business and partly because they simply have everything. Sure, some things could probably be found cheaper online, but the expertise, service, and human connection are worth it. One standout find was an incredible Japanese double-ply ribbon they were clearing out. The price was a fraction of what you'd pay through a Japanese supplier today, so I bought all 20 rolls they had. That alone made the drive to LA worth it. The store itself feels very much the same. The layout, the merchandise, the overall vibe are largely unchanged, which added to the nostalgia. Parking is no longer validated, but there's plenty of paid parking nearby. Street parking can be very tough and metered. While I do miss the Michael Levine's name, I'm genuinely happy the store found new ownership and was able to restore jobs for long-time employees. This remains an incredible resource, from fabrics and notions to trims, trends, and specialty items. It's massive and incredibly well stocked, easily one of the best economical fabric stores in Los Angeles. Most of all, I want to commend the staff. It was truly wonderful to see them again, and they are the heart of what makes this place special. read more

I would say overall this is a must stop if you are a fabric collector. They have such a wide variety of fabric types and a good selection of notions as well. You will find older cotton collections which is super cool to see. I saw some that I recognized were released back before 2007! Now the downside (if you're finicky) is that I did purchase some patterns that showed the fabric had been sitting on bolts for years. This didn't bother me, but that could be a concern for others. Prices are typical, but had I noticed earlier I may have asked if they would discount it. Service was prompt and the woman cutting my fabric was very helpful and friendly, even assisting me in locating a pattern I had lost track of. Overall, I definitely would go again. Traffic and parking can be sketch, but if you go super early you'll be just fine. read more

Prices are already pretty expensive but seriously overcharging on top of that?, I got 3 1/2 yards of denim fabric at $15 with a 20% discount and 7 buttons on $2.25, I did the math and that's $57.75. Perhaps it started off ALL bad, the parking sign notes $3.00, you drive upstairs and it's really $15.00, then inside Michael Levine itself the lighting is awful, and the need to use the restroom happened, have 75¢ ready to pay for the privilege and don't expect for the bathroom to be 'clean'. This use to be my go to fabric shop. unfortunately the new management has made a lot of changes that make it less worth it to come here unless I absolutely have too. The staff on the other hand is amazing! They've been there for years and know me by name. If the atmosphere and prices improved I'm sure people would start coming here more often. It's sad to see because so many fabric shops are closing by the day and I don't want to see this place close. hopefully they start giving more deals/incentives for people to shop here. I hadn't been to Michael Levine's in awhile, went there yesterday to find a hide for leather sofa repair. I looked through their selection, found something somewhat close, I was discussing with my daughter how I could use some leather dye, when gentleman working there asked if he could help. The place is overwhelmingly large, but I asked for help and was able to find EXACTLY the color and texture match I needed to repair a dress my kiddo wanted to wear to a wedding. This place was sold to new owners, as I found out on a recent trip to the LA Garment District. Unfortunately, the store is now a 'regular' fabric store--not a bad thing, but the usual large remnant bins were gone & only a few areas where you could get a bargain. The layout is as organized as an LA warehouse full of stuff can get. I appreciate the designated sections, plentiful staff, and fair pricing. Yes, you may still need to get in line for help especially when there's an onslaught of patrons rummaging around at the same time. The wait is dismal when you factor in the value.
