This was the second time we used this atty for review of documents related to real estate deals. The first time went OK; he looked up all that we requested and suggested some amendments to the promissory note that turned out to be beneficial for our security in case of default (hence the two stars). For this second deal, however it was another story: He was unresponsive to the point I had to contact him repeatedly for updates, and when he did reply the answers were questions unrelated to our paperwork. (He repeatedly said the borrower needed to add his wife to the paperwork. He's not married and I stated that more than once). Additionally this deal was time-sensitive so I requested he copy both work and personal email on all correspondence. He ignored this, replying only to my work email address. Since I was out of town, days were lost before I could reply to this nonsense. Again nothing for days, so I emailed again and said I needed him to be done by a certain date. His response was that he was waiting on my response to his first email. I replied I DID answer his question days ago, attaching the sent email... Nothing. He then left a voice mail that just rattled off liens on properties (Which I can, and did, find on my own). So I called back and he was very dismissive, the sum total of our conversation being, "Yeah, it's a little risky." It should be noted we were going through Hyatt Legal (which is provided by my employer) and I called this atty preemptively before entering into this second deal to check on his availability. I cannot say if Hyatt doesn't pay well, or this atty doesn't like this kind of work, but this initial conversation was the time for him to say he cannot, or prefers not, to proceed. I gave him the opportunity to pass on this case, and he said nothing, so in my mind you should then do your due diligence, complete the work in a timely fashion, and keep your client informed.
