It was a nice 10 minute walk down a wooded, paved road to the lake. There were a surprising number of cars parked on the road meaning we weren't the only ones who didn't mind the walk. Since it is very early in the year the water is very cold! But the water and the beach is perfectly clean. It is a nice place to take the family for an afternoon at the lake. More hiking would have bumped the rating to 5 stars!

The girls stayed as far away from them as possible and two out of the three got swimmers itch. The lifeguards were very pleasant. There are multiple picnic tables with grills. There are two well maintained playgrounds and larger areas for parties. The picnic tables are mostly tucked under trees so that you can get shade. The beach is large and nice but mostly gravel. If they could keep the ducks out of the public swimming area, it would be a perfect spot.

This was a cool side trip…read more Located on the west bank of the Penobscot River in Prospect, Maine, in an area known as the Penobscot Narrows. Fort Knox is one of the best-preserved military fortifications on the New England seacoast. The fort has many unique architectural features and a rich history behind its walls. It is America's first fort named after Major General Henry Knox. ​ During the country's infancy, Maine was repeatedly involved in northeast border disputes with British Canada. In fact, the area between Castine and the rich lumber city of Bangor was invaded and occupied by the British during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Fort Knox was established in 1844 to protect the Penobscot River Valley against a possible future British naval incursion. It was designed by Chief Engineer Joseph Totten, with a number of other engineers serving as superintendents of construction from 1844 - 1869, among them Isaac Ingalls Stevens and Thomas L. Casey. The fort was named for Major General Henry Knox, America's first Secretary of War, who was born in Boston but retired to Thomaston, Maine, in 1796. The fort garrisoned its first troops from 1863 to 1866. These troops were mostly volunteers undergoing training before being sent to their active posts and included members of the celebrated 20th Maine. Troops were briefly stationed at the fort during the Spanish-American war in 1898 but never saw military action. If you're in the area and enjoy history, especially military history it's worth your time to tour.

The small triangular park is quite sloped from top to bottom and I can't imagine that anyone does anything here which may be why there's no parking. The centerpiece is a tall granite Soldiers Monument that was dedicated in 1887. The main inscription reads, "In Honor of the Men/of/Ellsworth/Who Served and to the/Memory of those who fell on land and sea/In the War for the Union/Their Grateful Townsmen Have Raised This Memorial/1861 1887" [Review 14854 overall, 356 of 2021, number 40 in Maine.]

The granite from the quarry has built many iconic structures in America, including the Washington Monument, the U.S. Senate Office Building, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the United Nations Building, the Philadelphia Mint, the Empire State Building, and several piers that support the Brooklyn Bridge. I've been hiking up to this quarry since my childhood. It can be a dangerous place if you're not careful. There's some broken glass and high cliffs. With that being said, I've been swimming in the Quarry many times and never had issues. It's an okay hike for kids, but they should be with adults for safety. This place is a lotta fun for teens; all throughout high school, my friends and I would visit frequently in the summer.
