Chehalem Winery's in-town tasting room makes it uber convenient for customers to taste their wines. You can still go out to the winery for tours and private party tastings, by appointment. The tasting fee is $10 on weekdays (5 wines) and $15 on weekends (7 wines). But, the tasting fee is forgiven with a $50+ wine purchase. We approve of reasonable tasting fees and rebate policies so as to discourage the free wine seekers. Chehelam Is well known for quality red and white wines that focuses on cool-climate varieties that include Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, and Gamay Noir. With minimal processing and without compromising great fruit, Chehalem wines promise good ageing but are very drinkable young. Jodi, our host, welcomed us on a rainy afternoon. Their homey brick tasting room made for a comfortable venue for tasting and conversation. We tried 7 wines, more than normal, since we were the only customers and several wines, such as the SEXT Riesling, not normally opened were tasted. Besides SEXT, we also liked and bought a German white, a 2013 Ridgecrest Grüner Veltliner. If you have only time for a few winery tastings in Newberg, make one of them Chehalem. Jodi even gave us a wine box, even though we only bought 4 bottles, knowing we were just starting our Newberg wine adventure and would fill the box with other wines. I discovered this winery after seeing a lot of their wines on the wine list of some of the fancier restaurants in PDX. After my visit, I'm also now a big fan of Chehalem. We tried their Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Ian's Reserve Chardonnay. All were good. Of the pinot noirs, we tried the Ridge Crest, Three Vineyards, Stoller and Corral Creek. All were amazing as well. The staff here were incredibly friendly and felt genuine in their questions about my husband and me. However, I'm so used to tasting wine at wineries or tasting rooms off the main drag that it was tough to really get into the vibe with a busy road right out in front. Wines were tasty. Particularly a chardonnay, and I generally dislike chardonnays. This one was done differently. Very clean without all that oakiness. Would I come back again? Probably wouldn't go out of my way but if some friends wanted to go I would oblige happily. read more

I've done a lot of tasting in the Dundee, Yamhill-Carlton, N. Willamette Valley area, but somehow never made it to Chehalem. This trip, just yesterday as I write this, was to experience new places. My friend and I got to Chehalem just at opening on a cold, snowy/rainy saturday morning. We were the only guests so we had the undivided attention of Margaret the winery's direct sales manager. We were greeted by the tasting room's two beautiful dogs as well :) The tasting room is located in the heart of Newberg, very conveniently located just off 99. With the large sign (see photos here) it is hard to miss. The interior is spacious yet intimate and done in what I am calling that sort of 'Portland retro/loft modern' style. We liked it. The wines are delicious. Sure I could say they were superb which would be true but pretty much I drink wine because it tastes good, sooo.. It has taken me five years to appreciate Pinot Noir. I will definitely be adding several of the Chehalem vintages to my small list of favorites. Margaret was incredibly knowledgeable about Chehalem wines, and, gave some great recommendations for other non-pinot reds. She was enthusiastic, welcoming, and engaging. Both of us thought she was a great representative of the winery, and, we will be happy to return to Chehalem to chat with her again. I especially liked the 2008 Stoller, and, a surprise taste of their Riesling. Oh, and get that recommendation for the Taco truck around the corner because that place rocks. Some great wines with really friendly service. They have a nice selection of wines at good price points. The staff was very knowledgable, engaging, and down to earth. They really made the experience very enjoyable. I think Alex served us. She was relatively young, but knew a lot about wines and gave us great recommendations for other wineries to visit. If you're looking for the vineyard views with nice tables and couches to linger and savor your wine, this is not the place. If you want to try some solid wines and hear from some very friendly knowledgable staff, check it out. The tasting room is conveniently located off the main road. There are some great wineries in and around Newburg, OR. If you're coming from Napa and Sonoma, the experience is very different. The wines in Oregon are solid (mainly pinots), but wine country is not as built out. The wineries are spread out and the towns are not as quaint as Napa and Sonoma. The towns do not cater to tourists as much. You will not find world-class restaurants, cute shops, and fancy bakeries. Newburg is less than hour from Portland so you can do your dining and shopping there. Portland does have some great restaurants and shopping and it will be a lot cheaper than the Bay Area. read more

Fantastic wine experience! Chehalem is my "go to" winery when I have company in town. Although there are many pretty vineyards and tasting rooms to choose from, I find that Chehalem is charming, with superior service, and excellent high-quality wines. You don't get the "pretentious" vibe like you do at other wineries. Our sommelier Bob, assisted by Eileen, was excellent! They answered all of our questions, and were warm and friendly throughout the entire experience. So knowledgeable! Everybody had a good time, and we ended up taking home 3 bottles! (On a side note: The $20 tasting fee is waived with the purchase of a single bottle. Also, 6 wines are included in the house flight.) So I would like to start by saying this is my first ever yelp review. I have been to many amazing places throughout the world but I felt compelled to post. My husband and I were only in Portland a few days and didn't make any plans. We landed in Portland and I immediately was doing research on the best tasting rooms and vineyards in the area. I called to make a reservation for a library tour and tasting...but unfortunately I was told by Dave the director that he schedule was full. However, he told me to stop by the tasting room and then head on over to the vineyard to have a glass of rose and chit chat. 1. The tasting room was so adorable 2. We had a private room here for my sister's bridal shower. It was exactly what I had hoped for! Great food and amazing wine. Sunni was very helpful the entire time we were there and knew so much about everything on the menu. She had wonderful suggestions on what to get, and the everything charcuterie plates she recommended were gone within minutes! I would definitely recommend this place for any event or just a fun day, it was perfect and had a great atmosphere. We squeezed in one more tasting on our way back to Hood River. It was at the end of the day and this tasting room was still fairly busy. The wines are pretty good. I enjoyed tasting all of them and purchased a couple of their bottle plus two of their growlers. That was a fun and different option. Their whites are really tasty. You must make an appointment if you want to do a tasting. Their tasting is free - the only free one we've been to in our 2 day wine tasting tour. Jason was the one who did the tasting with us and had a table set up with glasses ready for our arrival. It was nice to be able to listen to him explain the wine and have the whole place to ourselves to enjoy. We tried 6 or 7, almost 1/2 white and 1/2 reds. We liked some of the wines, particular the pinot gris and reserve pinot noir so we got a few of each. You should check this winery out if you're in the area. read more

Very friendly staff. We went on the Saturday before Valentine's Day and they were quite busy, but everyone made time to speak to us about the wines, the vineyards, and the area. They had a nice variety of appetizers to munch on while trying the wines. My husband and I enjoyed all the wines and especially the Gamay Noir. read more

Stopped here on a whim. We were in the area on a Monday and decided to try some wine since we were in wine country. This was one of the few places open. Wines were yummy. We went here on Valentines Day for their special "Bacon not chocolate" tasting and it was amazing. By far the best tasting of the day. We tried 5 wines, each with a unique bacon dish...the wine and the food was outstanding. Then to top it off, we had Dulce de leche Bacon ice cream, which was delicious. All this for $5 per person.
