Tourist attraction food is usually exquisitely bad, as if they actually make it a point of pride to exceed the previous level of awfulness and eye-watering cost. So imagine my surprise when we stopped in at Stonehenge.
We hadn't expected to. We spotted the iconic monument while driving through to Cornwall to visit friends who never mentioned that one of the wonders of the ancient world was conveniently located along the way. After we picked our jaws up off the floor we made plans to visit (and so should you).
The site is a bit out of town, so it was most convenient to eat there. And I'm glad we did. The café features a number of local classics, like Cornish pasties and cream tea with clotted cream at reasonable prices. Though it's not the highest expression of modern British cuisine, it was far more than adequate, and outstanding in its class.
The parking lot, visitor center, and café are located a fair pace from the monument, and most people will take the regular shuttles to the site. But there's a network of walking paths, too. As you near the site, there's a side road that local vendors drive into and set up stands. You can get a bowl of strawberries and cream (in season) for dessert to finish your lunch. read more
