Elegant inside and out, friendly service and top notch food. We sat at the bar and our bartender took care of us all evening. Had one of the best old fashioned's in the area. He knows his stuff! The food was fine dining at its best. A garlic buttered escargot with puff pastry just melts in your mouth. Lobster bisque full of flavor and full of, well, lobster, and a ton of it. I have to say, the extra touch to the tasty French onion soup was a talking point all evening...it came with dedicated scissors so you could cut the cheese. What an amazing touch. And they sure did help lol. The center cut medium rare filet mignon paired with some frites was definitely the showstopper this evening. Stonewalls Restaurant was one of the more pleasant surprises during my time in Banner Elk. It's a beautiful restaurant, and I had been looking forward to dining there for quite some time. From the moment we arrived, the staff was warm, welcoming, and attentive. The atmosphere, however, felt a little mixed. The restaurant seemed to have two distinct personalities. The newer side, where the bar is located, felt polished and cohesive, while the older dining room--where we were seated because it had more availability--felt like it hadn't quite received the same attention. The lighting on that side of the restaurant was particularly harsh, which made the dining room feel less intimate than it could have been. Since it's also the larger and busier dining space, I think small touches like candles on the tables or softer lighting would go a long way toward creating a warmer, more personal atmosphere. I also noticed an interesting contrast between the beautiful leather-bound menus and some of the furniture and wall décor, which felt more reminiscent of a hotel dining room than the upscale mountain restaurant the food suggested. Thankfully, the meal more than made up for those observations. I ordered the wild mushroom pasta with lobster, and it was the standout dish of the evening. The pasta was rich without feeling heavy, the mushrooms added wonderful depth, and the lobster was cooked beautifully. It's a dish I'd gladly order again. My boyfriend ordered a steak, which he thoroughly enjoyed. We also started with the escargot and the crab cakes. The escargot, while not quite on the level of some traditional French restaurants I've visited, was still very well prepared and enjoyable. The crab cakes were outstanding--full of crab, nicely seasoned, and easily one of the best appetizers of the meal. Our only complaint was that there was only one crab cake on the plate; we both found ourselves wishing there had been another. Overall, Stonewalls Restaurant delivered an excellent meal with genuinely welcoming service. While I'd love to see the older dining room updated to better match the quality of the cuisine, the food alone makes it well worth a visit if you're in Banner Elk. read more

Without reservations we were seated outside without a wait, I'd recommend making a reservation though. We split a NY Strip medium, a baked potato with all the fixings, & creamed spinach. My son's sprite came out quickly, and the bar drinks followed. I loved my holiday punch drink! The restaurant was still decorated for Christmas, but it made it more charming since we are in town to ski for the weekend. She brought out bread, but it wasn't warm, so that was odd. My son and husband still ate it; I did not. The escargot was ok ; not as good as other places we have had it. The fried deviled eggs were INSANE. We loved them so much. My son got the ribeye and a baked potato. He ordered it medium rare, and it was more on the rare side, but he still enjoyed it. As he kept eating, it cooked up a little bit. This was our first dinner here. We spent a weekend getaway near Banner Elk. We chose Stonewalls for our anniversary dinner. We both love a good steak. My husband would have liked more steak options. It seemed a limited menu. (I booked this place because of the escargot app) We started with garlic escargot! Super great. The little crostini with it is a take it or leave it it makes eating the escargot a little messy. For our mains. My husband got the ribeye. And I got the 10oz prime rib. I would have liked a bigger plate for my prime rib. Flavors were all there. For my side I had the sweet potatoes. And I got the mushrooms as my enhancement. Super nice serving. Service was great. But we just wanted a little more... to our dining experience. I thought it was going to be a more intimate vibe For dessert we indulged! We had the key lime pie and peach cobbler. Super yum! The food was great. The service left something to be desired. We were four people at a tiny four top, and had to ask to have empty dishes and bottles away to make room. When I asked for an empty bottle and cup to be removed, they removed the cocktail I was drinking. It was 1/3 full. It took 10 minutes to get the waitresses attention (she was talking with a two top with a puppy). I told her what happened. Somehow she found my cocktail and brought the 1/3 full cup that had been who knows where back to me. I asked for a fresh cocktail, as I am unwilling to drink a cocktail that has been taken away and brought back from who knows where. Unbelievably, I was charged for the replacement cocktail. I NEVER leave a bad google review but this time- I VERY rarely ever leave a bad review. I will go to the manager or person in charge. - which I did before writing this- My husband and I thought we could get away for a minute from our teenagers (one with special needs and we never get away by ourselves) to have a glass of wine- all the bar and get takeout - the bar stools had signs that said reserved and when we asked if we could sit down we were turned away. We Called later this evening to make a reservation for the bar for tomorrow and was told they don't take reservations for the bar. Asked for the manager- Courtney got on the line - who supposedly is the manager- and said they have certain people who come in frequently that they reserve seats for at the bar but they don't take bar reservations. She claimed to know me yet I never gave her my name. We arrived 10 minutes before they opened and walked in with the people in line and were turned away from sitting at the bar. We had planned to spend a lot of money on food (because the menu sounded delicious)to take back to our mountain house but instead we were told we could get a drink and go outside. So- we went Nextdoor with a very pleasant staff that was friendly and had a great experience. We spent our money and had a delicious dinner for us and our kiddos. Also- while we were at your restaurant the entire bar was open- not one person sitting in any of the seats. We probably would have taken up 30 minutes of your precious time getting takeout and a drink. The hostess was a snob and Courtney - supposed manager- was as well. The house we are staying in recommended your restaurant however we have not been treated this way ever. I am so disappointed- we met a couple at Baner Elk winery earlier today who suggested we check out your restaurant and they were hoping to go tonight. We arrived shortly after they opened, had a reservation and had a great table in a smaller section of the restaurant. The ambiance was calming and comfortable with a modern decor. Our server was very personable and fun. She was attentive at the right time, giving us ample time to feel relaxed and able to enjoy our cocktails and appetizer of amazing fried deviled eggs. We recently ordered takeout from Stonewalls and it was amazing! After a day of exploring the Banner Elk area we were unsure of where to eat so we checked Yelp for reviews. I also had recommendations from our Airbnb host to eat here but was hesitant because of the live music. Often it's too loud for me but this was not the case here. It looked like a simple one man setup with no super loud equipment. We decided to check out the menu in person and to see if there were any specials not listed online, and I'm so glad we did. We walked in, were given menus and directed to the bar to order. The bartender Colton was extremely attentive and rattled off numerous specials with ease, making a recommendation when I had questions. Once home, the food was amazing and we ate every bit. From bread to dessert (delicious key lime pie and crème brûlée), everything was perfect. We will 1000% eat here when we're back in town! read more

Lettuce had a different taste and ended up not eating it. The homemade pimento cheese was absolutely awesome, in which Joel said we needed to try. Our table order several things; escargot, trout with apparagus, alfredo with sauce, filet mignon, pan blackened chicken with maple brussel sprouts. We each tasted each others foods and the flavors just weren't there for me or our family. If anything, each dish needed salt or a just something. Stonewalls is a charming place. The ambience is warm and welcoming. The food is very good. My steak was done perfectly and had a wonderful, char grilled flavor. Top notch. The maple Brussels sprouts were not my favorite. On their own they would have been very good but I don't think they work alongside the charcoal flavor of the steak. My salad was great, as was the cheesecake dessert. All-in-all, a very good meal. The service was very good, too. But don't ask for anything that's not on the menu--the chef is not adventurous. The restaurant is nicely decorated and was clean. We ordered the hoisin salmon with brussel sprouts and the rib eye with a baked potato. The salmon was cold and had way too much hoisin sauce which was brushed on right before serving it. The maple brussel sprouts were way too sweet with maple syrup just poured on them and they were not cooked well. The rib eye was over cooked and very fatty. The baked potato was good. Fantastic! We loved everything! I have food allergies, and not the typical ones, so I called ahead of booking our table. The hostess who answered the phone went above and beyond to check with the chefs in the kitchen for me. There was a very small list of things that I wasnt able to have and she let me know about them BEFORE we even booked our anniversary dinner. When we arrived the same hostess greeted us and immediately told me that she was the one who had spoke with me on the phone a few days ago. She then led us to our table, let us know who our server was and that she was aware, and the kitchen was aware, of my allergies. When our server met us at the table she immediately confirmed my allergies with me and let us know about the specials, to which there was a lengthy list, and made sure to let me know what was safe for me to have. My husband ordered the fried deviled eggs, and they let me know about a cross contamination between my allergens and the frying oil for the eggs. I was able to have a couple bites, enough to know that 1) they were delicious and 2) not to push it for my allergy. I had the lobster bisque, it was very good. My husband had the ribeye with blue cheese butter, sauté onions and mushrooms (all up grades, but so reasonable) and their stuffed baked potato (the best twice baked potato you have ever had, but again a very reasonable upgraded side). I had the chicken oscar. My husband's steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and my chicken was cooked completely through AND still juicy. It goes to show that in a proper chef's hands, a steak can be a perfect temperature and chicken doesn't have to be dry. We each had a creme brule for dessert and it was delicious. We were completely stuffed when we left and it was the best meal we'd had in years. The meal was extremely reasonably priced and the portions were large. We've spent more at a chain restaurant for much lesser quality food. Our meal was $130, before tip. We had 2 appetizers, 2 main course meals and desserts. That is extremely reasonable for all of that. The server was fantastic, the ambiance was very nice, the host was exceptional and the food was out of this world. If you come to the area this is a must eat spot, but make a reservation! We're local-ish, definitely close to come back again, and we will! Stonewalls, thank you for an extraordinary night. Walking in is dream like in a mountain town. Outdoor fireplace lit with lightly dusted snow from the night before. Appears the outside area is dog friendly but no heating lamps (I didn't ask, just saying what it didn't appear to have) and it was 25 degrees outside. Immediately greeted by 3 people at 5:30 on a Wednesday. I asked to be seated at the bar since I was singular but they had that closed for seating for the Annual Chamber dinner. They did inform me it would get a bit loud around 6, which was kind. Sat towards the stairs area, which was quaint and only sat a few tables. Doesn't have a partition for noise but they do have a curtain. With that room full of people next to where I was sitting is noisy if you're wanting a romantic dinner, but solo I love the gossip. Haha. The waitress (Reagan) was so kind. She filled me in on the specials and I chose the halibut. But started with the bread and escargot. Bread and butter, how do you really go wrong, but the escargot with pastry on top tasted like dirt. Now hear me out, I eat a lot of escargot and I realize they live and eat most things like dirt. But out of all the times I've had it, it's never tasted like actual dirt. I pushed it aside and told my waitress to keep it on my bill, but I didn't finish it. She kindly took it off anyhow. For an entree I ordered the special halibut and creamed spinach. Both DELICIOUS. The fish was cooked perfectly and the seasoning was perfectly complimented. The creamed spinach is my type of salt level, but if you're sensitive to salt, it's apparent. Ordered the Mississippi Mud Pie for dessert. I'm not a huge sweet eater but I love a good bite or two. Really confused why this has so many stars...food was really subpar and under seasoned. Shrimp tasted like rubber, steaks were cooked three different temperatures on one cut, and nothing had salt or pepper.
