My hubby had a pho soup which smelled disgusting, they said it smells funny because it is intestine, but if it were cleaned properly it would not smell like this... They took it of the bill for us at least. Pad thai was editable but not very tasty, def not thai style. My curry dish was blend not too flavorful. I would not return here, not a great experience. Really awesome find. I've seen many restaurants and cafes come and go from this location, seems like this place is here to stay. Everything was tasty and the staff were very friendly with us. It might not be a place for the less traveled (attached to a gas station), or snobby Floridian crowd. That being said it's a welcome addition to the area that isn't trying to price gouge the transplants and seasonal tourists like you might find in downtown banner elk. read more

As soon as we walked in, an employee asked if we had reservations, and I almost laughed, thinking it was a joke. I wasn't aware you needed reservations for a restaurant attached to a gas station, but she put our name on a list, and our wait turned out to be much less than she had promised us. Several other small parties came in around the same time we did, and the hostess/waitress seemed a little stressed about this. She warned everyone they would have a wait almost as if she hoped they would be discouraged and leave (some did). A couple of parties got a little salty about having to wait when Nguyen's had open tables (seating for 16-18 people) that they said were reserved, yet in the hour and a half we were there, none of the people those tables were being held for ever showed up. The whole reservations and hostess/seating situation might warrant some restructuring. While we waited I pondered the decor, which is a tad odd, I have to say. They've combined traditional Asian elements with a contemporary cafe style and thrown in an exuberant collection of wooden signs with cutesy sayings, and that was a head scratcher for me. It was clean and roomy enough, though, so I can look past their unconventional aesthetic. Our waiter was hopping, but he kept a smile, and our food came pretty quickly even though the restaurant was clearly busy for the number of staff working. The house-made ginger dressing was a stand-out, just-right and not overly sweet. The hibachi entrees were what you would expect from a good Japanese steakhouse, and my son gave the fried calamari a thumbs up. My son found half a plastic bottle lid (the tamper-proof barrier you find inside the bottle cap when you first open it) stirred up in his rice, so that made me deduct a star. We ordered a taro milk to go after dinner, and 3 out of 4 of us really liked it. I would definitely give the specialty teas and boba a try if we visited again, and we will because the food was good overall, and the waiter was really good. read more

Service was fast! All staff was super friendly and attentive especially for a large party of 18. Food was great! Large portion sizes for entrees and lots of flavor. Appetizers were great to share. Summer rolls and krab rangoons were a favorite. Not much Vietnamese options, but overall great variety of asian dishes. Boba tastes more like aiyu jelly or crystal boba for texture, and thai tea was good. Inside was pretty and clean. Love the Asian themed decor and lights. The food is good, but their prices are out of control. Their prices are more money than lunas restaurant located in Banner Elk the atmosphere is way below lunas. They are attached to a gas station but their prices reflect that they are in some luxury restaurant they need to lower the prices and reflect where they are. We stopped by for some comfort Asian food during our trip and this place, although it wasn't outstanding, it got the job done. We ordered the Pho, Steak, and Spicy Miso Udon. The Pho was okay- noodles were good, they were really skimpy on the meat though, even though the menu listed all the meats, the broth was not as rich as we'd like it to be, but it was not terrible. The Steak was cooked and seasoned nicely- it came with veggies. The Spicy Miso Udon was good, except the soup was unfortunately not Spicy Miso soup, however it was filled with grilled veggies and seared scallops and shrimp. Don't let the outside scare you! I love Asian food and this was probably the best fried rice I have ever had. Seriously the outside sucks and could be improved tremendously but the inside is clean and decorated well. We were exited to find Japanese nearby in this small mountain town. Don't let the outside stray you. It's located next to a gas station, but The inside was very charming with traditional Asian decor.. atmosphere felt more upscale like an nicer Japanese restaurant with your traditional menu. I tried the chicken hibachi and California roll. Both were very good! I was happy to recommend this place with some more details and pics until we paid. They have the credit machines where you pay at your table while they hold the machine in their hand. I really dislike this method especially when they hold it out for you before you are ready to leave. When we added a 18% tip (which is a typical tip where we're from) and the waitress, Madison, made a very rude comment. Honestly, we were shocked because up until then we were happy with our meal and service. We didn't fully process the insult until we walked out the door. She sarcastically said "that good, huh", then proceeded to tell her co-workers it was an insulting tip and "a kick in the teeth" where we could hear. We have never experienced this kind of rude reaction and we're honestly confused because we did not intend to insult her! Maybe we should have left 20? But now we wish we would have left zero tip and don't plan on coming back because of this issue. Note: I did come back to edit this review, because of a bad experience with our waitress I still want you to know that the food was very good and nicely presented. What a wonderful little restaurant in Banner Elk, NC! My husband and I have been searching for a great sushi restaurant in Western NC for the past three years. We've finally found it! The interior is bright and so cute. We were greeted and seated right away. We got our drinks quickly. Everything we ordered was fresh and beautifully presented. We ordered a lot, but the portions were huge, so we took about half of it home with us. We had summer rolls, squid salad, calamari, California roll, spicy tuna roll, angry tuna roll, and dragon roll. Well, we waited 40 mins (at the counter) after the initial 40 minute wait they quoted before we headed over to pickup food. The restaurant was basically empty, the owner seemed to do everything even though there were other staff available to help. The food was just okay with the pricing higher than what it warranted. The location is next to a gas station, the inside decor is very basic and just doesn't seem worth paying those prices. What a hidden gem. Excellent cuisine, generous portions, very friendly service. My husband ordered the Pad Thai (his "go to" in all Asian restaurants) but this was the best we've ever tasted and beautiful presentation. I ordered the chicken, sweet potato ramen soup and it was superb. I barely put a dent in it and took home a full quart for tomorrow's dinner.
