2/5 architecture - Like, seriously. What is this alien pillbox of a Health Sciences Tower? That's a real question. 4.5/5 education - Great faculty. Learning feels worthwhile (for the most part). 4/5 environment - Long Island is nice, though there's nothing to do. At least I can focus.

Went to this school 20 years ago and came back today to revisit with my teenage child. Lots of changes. New buildings, bikes on campus, water fountains, Starbucks, markets on campus, and new dining options just to name a few. One surprise I found was Charles B Wang as the student infirmary. Charles B Wang has health centers throughout NYC for the low income and undocumented citizens. I was happy to see CBW has a center at Stony Brook.

Don't take Stony Brook for granted just because it is local. It is one of the top rated schools in the US and so affordable!

Did I have to make calls for 3 weeks, then email, then talk to a supervisor who had to make our appointment? Yes. Was I unhappy about that ? Yes. After we made it through all of that mess and stress it was smooth sailing. Having never been there or at a dental school clinic before, we didn't know where to go or who to check in with. After going to the information desk, the dental check in and then a different desk to verify insurance (even though we did that on the phone) we had a seat and less than 5 min later we were called in by a dentist. The dentist was really nice, listened to what we had to say, asked a ton of questions and then got to work checking my daughters teeth. We were told that she needed 2 root canals so we were expecting that but after all of the questions and tests, tapping, checking her tooth's reaction to cold, x rays and looking through a high powered microscope type of thing, he determined that she in fact did not need a root canal. Her fillings were not close to the nerve at all. Good news! The problem was that her fillings were too high making her bite off and causing pain. The dentist took his time and adjusted the fillings and my daughter felt immediate relief. He told her to switch to a soft toothbrush and got a little lesson on how to brush. He then called his attending and went over the whole thing, got the approval and that was it! The whole visit was covered by insurance. Everything was clean and very modern, unlike some of the dentist's offices I've been to and I will definitely be using the school again. Many thanks to the teachers and students!

After that in order to see the dentist you'd have to drive all the way to the hospital for them to do a PCR test for you to then drive all the way back there the next day to have the work done on your mouth if you live 45 minutes away that's an hour and a half just for them to stick a Q-tip up your nose so I suffered longer. But during that time and for the following year and a half they continue to send me a bill for four dollars every single month sometimes twice a month. They spent over $300 trying to collect four dollars from me. I called the billing department over 10 times to discuss the matter and billing and every single time I called I got put into a No one ever answers the phone. After leaving 10 different messages on 10 different occasions still call back. I finally went up to the school to make an appointment now that you don't have to unnecessarily drive an hour and a half to get a PCR test. When I was done making my series of appointments that do because it's been quite a while. I went over to the billing department to speak to the about not returning my calls for the last three years. I told her that this kind of frustration is what drives people to do crazy things like just go after people and kill them because there's crazy people in the world. At no point did I threaten this woman or say that I would do this? I said that's why people do things like that out of frustration. Well that alarmed this woman and rather than talking about it, they decided to put me on a terrorist list with security. I think most of it was just a pure embarrassment that she must've felt because when I went to complain to her, the last thing I said to her your job in a very loud angry voice

There are very few ups and very man downs to living in Schomburg. First off, it is restricted to…read moremainly graduate students. Pros: - Close to campus (~5-10 minute walk to campus with many buses going through) Cons: - Rent rates are absurd. 50-100% greater than off campus housing. - You are living in a very hectic area (between West and Kelly Quads) so it can get quite noisy - Work order for appliances takes basically a semester to a year to fill. - Increasing rents - graffiti/dirty Last I was here, it was cheaper to live in chapin than to live here. Being in Stony Brook, you need a car anyways, so living on campus really has no benefit. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. It is not worth it to live in Schomburg. There is no benefit to living on campus as a graduate student.

Stony Brook University's Schomburg Apartments are slums! If you have made the mistake of enrolling…read moreat Stony Brook University (my condolences), do not make another mistake by signing up for Schomburg Apartments. Here's what you can expect: -Rent rates that are several hundred dollars more than what you'd pay off campus. The rent is higher than what financial aid budgets for housing, so you will have to ask for a budget increase to afford to live in the slum. -A lack of running water. This has happened three times in the year I lived here. Sometimes they give you notice, sometimes they don't. -Constant fire drills. At least once a week, someone will set off the fire alarm. This happens at all hours of the night. -Nonworking appliances. You didn't think you'd have a working fridge and oven, did you? -Holes in the wall and graffiti. -Noise! The walls are thin and there are no consequences for repeatedly disturbing others. Unless you like listening to angry teen scream rock at all hours, I'd find someplace else to live. -Shoddy internet connection. Did you ever wonder what it was like to live in the pre-internet era? At Schomburg Apartments, you can find out! -Being nickel and dimed constantly. Schomburg will charge you $25 for landline phone service that can only make calls to NYS numbers. You can't opt out. They won't even provide you with a phone because they know no one under the age of 65 uses landlines-it's just a way to charge you more money. They do the same thing with cable (charge you for cable but refuse to provide you with a cable wire). -Constantly increasing rent without providing additional services. -Schomburg's latest scheme is to charge for summer rent whether or not the resident resides in the apartment during the summer or not. If you sign up for Schomburg (so many mistakes!), you cannot come back the following year unless you pay summer rent. It's yet another way to try to milk students for every dollar.

I currently attend Empire State College-Hauppauge location and have found my experience to exceed…read moremy expectations! I will be graduating with my BS in Community and Human Services in May 2014. This college is geared towards working adults, and utilizes a "guided - independent study" approach. IT IS NOT AN ONLINE SCHOOL, but does offer 100% online courses. The guided independent study approach is very flexible in that you work primarily at your own pace, submit your assignments and then meet with your instructors roughly once per month per class. As someone who has done the traditional "brick and mortar" style learning and online learning, for me the independent study proved to be the best avenue for me to learn. This school is exactly what you make of it , right down to designing your degree planner. Your assigned Mentor and instructors highlight the fact that each course is geared toward your personal interests, so it makes the course work interesting and enjoyable. I feel I have learned a lot with my education. The school and course work heavily emphasizes writing work as most of your assignments. If this scares you, it shouldn't because the school offers many avenues to help you critique your writing work as well as offers writing workshops. My mentor, faculty and staff are very pleasant to work with and are very accommodating, all while getting a high quality education. Because of my education at Empire, I have been accepted into Adelphi University's Masters of Social Work program and will be starting in the Fall of 2014! I would advise anyone who is self-motivated, well organized and interested in learning to attend this school! Hope this helps someone looking to attend!
