(Shopped 04/02/2025 WE @ 3:30pm, 04/08/25 TU @ 2:00pm, and several other times afterwards): Boy have I stopped and shopped! In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes and businesses throughout Jersey City and specifically the Heights, I finally made my way to Stop & Shop's Central Ave. location. I was working in the area on a project (and remote working, too) for an extended stay and needed some groceries and household goods to save a bit of money while I stayed at a dear friend's place. I've really only tried one other local grocery store (Supremo Food Market), so I was kind of excited to see how they compared. A regional northeastern grocery chain who got its start in 1914, it had slowly expanded through acquisitions and being acquired, and finally broke into the New Jersey market in 2011. For those familiar with the former 99 Cent Only brand, I found the two very comparable with a little mix of Smart & Final. Would I continue to stop and shop with this brand and particular at this convenient location whenever I was in town!? On my first visit, I learned they had a rewards program from a kind older female checker, so I signed up once I got home so I could earn some goodies! After a user error mishap with the rewards program, I finally got the hang of it. Each cashier I dealt with was fine and got the job done, but little to no chit-chat, and the lines where you bagged your own groceries were best if you only had ten items or less. All was good! PARKING (FREE; N/A this instance) This was an easy flat 10-minute walk from my friend's place. Otherwise, they had a medium-sized private lot, and there appeared to be plenty of spots along the main drag of Central Ave. and all surrounding roads - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A decent-sized store that had a general sense of snugness as I walked down each multiple long aisle filled with products, you had the produce section once you entered, then the meat/seafood section along the back wall, the dairy section along the far wall, the bread section in a small corner at the front, and the frozen section took up two aisles. Sadly, there wasn't a fresh deli section, but I always managed to find the reduced price section in the far back. Decent natural lighting came through the front windows and doors while soul-sucking fluorescent electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There weren't any TVs nor background music. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Central Ave.'s Stop & Shop location had become my go-to local grocer in the area and would continue to use them. I found everything I needed, they carried both national and private label (even their own!) brands, the prices were very comparable, I had no issues with the quality, the rewards program was helpful, and the service was straightforward. Sure, there wasn't a prepared section, the brand/product selection wasn't as extensive as a major grocer, and the aesthetics wasn't the best, but it served my basic needs. And, I always loved supporting small businesses whenever possible (regional in this case). I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experiences was around $228.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). I have a love hate relationship with this place. Its a local spot, and we need a great supermarket, but sometimes the pricing in here has me scratching my head. I hope management really reads this, and starts getting more aggressive on the pricing, as we need a better neighborhood spot. Unfortunately this one is ok, but needs improvement. read more

Not the best grocery store, but certainly not the worst. I feel you can always tell a lot about a grocery store just from the parking lot. This one was a tad bit run down, with a few scattered shopping carts but it wasn't too bad. Generally, this store had good selection. I couldn't find a particular brand of milk that I was looking for or habanero peppers, but otherwise they had everything I needed. Produce was fresh. Prices seemed average. We used self checkout and we kept having to flag the attendant because it wasn't registering when we bagged items. Otherwise, it's a good option if you are in the area. read more

Bull crap regarding the men's room being closed. If your competition ( even other Stop & Shops) have open restrooms you better get with the program fast! I emptied my bladder at the Mc Donald's on the next shop and then food shopped at the Shop Rite in Hoboken where they also have an open restroom. This place needs to be shut down. This is not the first time I have purchased food here to get home to find it was VERY expired. OR the dates on the shelves expire in a matter of days! This supermarket is definitely not super. Staff are nice enough once you get to know them, but the selection is not great, they have almost no medicine/first aid/beauty products, and their produce is wack and expensive. No deli, no meat or fish department, just package meat and fish which never looks that great. I trek to Shoprite in North Bergin or downtown JC, despite living 3 blocks away from this Stop and Shop. :( read more

A small fresh produce section, reminds me of the Sunmart back at home in the Midwest... it's packed with many processed food aisles, and some meat and fish in the back, along with dairy and more to the far side. Small selection of Hallmark-type cards, too. At least it has a small parking lot. There's a tough distinction figuring out what the entry vs. exit is, and the service desk has limited hours. The saddest Stop & Shop I have ever been to. It can barely compare to C-town on Jersey Ave, only the produce section is even smaller, shadier, and outright unattractive. Produce selection there is so barren, it almost made me cry. The Stop&Shop I got used to and remember is in Morris Plains, and it is comparable to Shop Rite JC Downtown or A&P. Apparently, Stop & Shop supermarkets, like C-towns, vary significantly by location. Though I like to give C-town a break because it's a discount supermarket, and varying food quality and selection is expected with such a business model. For Stop & Shop, a player in a league with Shop Rite, A&P, Acme, and Path Mart stores, this sort of "selection" is totally unacceptable. Great brand image there, Stop & shop. Why even bother with the parking lot? people drive to real supermarkets with attractive selections - this one is not even cheap to make up for the selection. I would only come here when I need something desperately, because it's the closest supermarket to me, and I don't have the time to walk over a few blocks up to C-town, which actually sells some decent food, produce, and has a nicer selection- (it's always a hit or miss with C-towns though -this one is a hit.) Where we are from we call it STOP & ROB bc the prices are out of line for a neighborhood grocery store. 3 pack of garlic $3.99, strawberries $8. They're usually out of chicken or steak at some point in the day. Pretty sure it only gets business because shop rite and other larger grocery stores are a little out of the way. read more

This is one of the most disgusting Stop & Shops out there. Just check out the Meat Aisle. There's nothing fresh about it. All the chicken, pork, beef and prepared fish have been in and out of the freezer. They have been frozen and re-frozen numerous times and have been placed back and forth. There's always a shortage of cashiers making shopping after work between 4:00 - 7:00pm always frustrating customers with long lines. The Jersey City Heights deserve better! There could've been a SUPER Stop & Stop in the area. BLAME THIS DISGUSTINGness on Councilman Michael Yun who stopped it from being built and did all he can to halt it because it competed with his vegetable store and card/accessory shoppe at Central Avenue. He doesn't even live in the area and has a house somewhere else in Central Jersey! So now residents of The Heights elected him a 2nd term. Good luck getting fresh meats and vegetables! This Stop & Shop needs a complete overhaul. There is no deli, the fruits and veggies are in bad shape, and there is never enough registers open. I've had some bad buys where I purchased tortillas that were stale and completely dry and stuck to each other (not expired) and frozen products that had freezer burn. read more

Stop and Shop is normally pretty great. Living up in the Heights you get used to having to go a million different places for everything you need. You come here for packaged meat ie chicken, beef, and pork, but definitely NOT for veggies and fish. Go around the corner to the Supremo for an excellent selection of cheap, high quality veg and across the street to 555 for fish. Decent selection of snacks, soup, drinks, and frozen. More specific items you need to go elsewhere. Small selection of house and beauty wares. The store employees are very nice and are EXTREMELY helpful. The people in line never the less, are complete idiots. I get stuck behind the same morons each time I show up to pay. No matter what time of day, you can finish your shopping in under 20, but it will take you 20 min to pay. HAVE A NO WIC line!!!! It's definitely not the Bayonne Super Stop & Shop but it's better than anything else i've been to in the heights. It is unfortunate that this one is so small, but I come here for the Natures Promise brand meats and snacks, which are very reasonable. They don't have a deli and the meat section does leave a lot to be desired but for a few items this place will do! read more

This store gets worse and worse, waited in line for a half hour to buy 2 items! The manager supposed to be directing traffic is not where she is supposed to be. Although I shop here every now and then, the choices are limited in Jersey City Heights because of the way Stop & Shop marketing team perceives the patrons who shop there are "low-income workers and minorities" that there's no need to supply the store with better products & amenities. This is completely UNTRUE because most of the people who lives in the Jersey City Heights area work in the city and are family-oriented, OWN their houses and cars compared to to the trendy, apartment/condo-renting hipsters in Downtown JC. So what happens is most residents shop at neighboring Shop Rite in Hoboken or Union City. Fresh Direct now delivers in The Heights but the prices reflect the convenience and its hard to feed a family on a budget when ordering from Fresh Direct. So I suggest Stop & Shop update the store to reflect the changing neighborhood of The Jersey City Heights area. In addition, this store is not well maintained by its managers again because of that perception I mentioned earlier. The selection is limited. There is no Deli, no Bakery, or Seafood Selection like most other Stop & Shops in New Jersey. Most of the things that are advertised in the flyers are not available. Don't walk up the stairs to the restrooms because it has not been cleaned in years. So as the saying goes if the restrooms are not clean then the sanitation for the rest of the store is much to be desired. read more

Had a very poor service experience. The employees are not friendly. The return desk service hours is very limited. Never going back.

Decided to avoid Trader Joe's Hoboken rush. Cashier forgot to bag a $3 bottle of mayo, I call in 20 minutes after leaving and they say bring a receipt no problem. Upon arrival the customer service desk has a line 30-40 minutes long and only seems to be handling lotto tickets I purchased the Mayo a second time due to their double incompetence. My experience here was pretty great both times I went. I came to get last minute beef to cook and surprisingly it was the freshest, tastiest, cleanest beef I have ever purchased from a super market, not to mentioned I purchased it at 11pm on a Friday night in October,2016. I also got organic broccoli and organic sea salt and vinegar chips from kettle which was surprising because I had no idea they would sell it. I also picked up some fruits and other veggies, cheese eggs and milk and I was very satisfied! Everything was clean, not expired and neatly out away. I will be returning here. read more

Just came in here for the first time and it this has to be the worst Stop and Shop I've ever been to. It is so small, run down and I noticed that the grapes were half eaten and the apples were over five days expired. I thoroughly enjoy the Stop and Shop in Bloomfield and Clifton; they're big, bright and fully stocked. This location needs to be shut down and reopened under new management. read more

This place is hot one minute and cold the next. The service ranges from horrific to supreme. You really never know what you're gonna get when you go in next. One day the rude cashier is not paying attention and thus over charging me. The next day, the friendly stock clerk is checking all over the store just to make sure they don't have one package of organic hot dogs left for me. read more

Great customer service, has almost everything one would need. Very reasonable, with a large selection of items, ethnic foods addressing Jersey City in all its variations, groceries, herbs, spices and veggies galore. On Thurs. Oct. 1st I came in at 6:40a, which is a first. When I completed my shopping, I stepped up to register 5 and asked politely "Are you open?". Only because it was early, I wasn't sure, plus it's always polite to ask. That's how I was raised. The response from this cashier was "No, the light's just on" and turned her back mumbling slurs. I responded "it's always polite to ask", but I don't think she heard me. She stop talking, but as she scanned my items she tossed them across the moving belt lackadaisically. I kept my composure. I am a disabled veteran, I could have lost my temper, but didn't. I normally have pleasant experiences, but the woman on Register 5 on Thursday, Oct. 1st at 7am is who this 1 star review is for. read more

Although everything seemed in its place, the produce wasn't as fresh as it could be and overall it seemed dusty. Worst thing is the customers. I live 3 blocks away from Stop & Shop which makes it the most convenient grocery story but I would rather drive down to the Hoboken Shoprite to do my grocery shopping. Only good thing is that is actually has its own private parking lot and has a red box rental inside. They recently changed their POS system so if you don't bring your stop and shop card, they can no longer look it up by your phone number. You can however download the stop and shop app so they can scan your card from your phone. (Still not the most convenient). The aisles are tight and always seems dirty. The food isn't always the freshest. There is a lack of deli and seafood section. Overall selection of products is limited. The price stickers are never updated (it's not that hard for the staff to go around and change it from week to week). read more

the store is kind of small and the isles aren't correct labeled, i find myself having to go down each isle anyways just to check because something can be easily missed. the staff is friendly and I've never had a problem there but it just gives an overall run down feel when inside this store. Could be a little more organized an lively/brighter inside. don't mind going here for necessities because its so close but wouldn't recommend doing full shopping lists here as for it could be crowded as well. read more

I give it 4 stars because it is the only super market around here that has a parking lot and is actually kind of big.... Otherwise I'd have to drive down to ShopRite or Pathmark. Go to any other Stop & Shop and you'll understand the star rating. Dreadful. The store is smaller than most but could be utilized if they changed the layout. Their options are not great if you are looking for healthy foods. Sure, they have produce and some solid snacks, but otherwise Shoprite has them beat. It says a lot when their frozen aisle is 70% overly-processed junk a la Hungryman, Banquet, Stouffer's, etc. They don't want their community to thrive. read more
