It is a local supermarket, with very reasonable prices, and with great opportunities sometimes. Food is OK, usually fresh. Meat iand fish are not their strong points, though. You cannot ask for fancy stuff, but otherwise, everything for simple day to day needs is present. Staff is also usually helpful, even if not always really competent. Being a five minute walk from home, it is the ideal place to have small errands. read more

Don't ever, ever use their paper bags. They fall apart like tissue paper. Since people mainly use reusable bags now, Stop and Shop appears to have wildly cut bag on the quality of their paper bags (even though they need far less of them). The fracturing of their bags has happened to me a lot, but after one fell apart in my hand and dropped a half gallon of milk on a loaf of bread, smashing it flat and nearly useless, I felt the need to say something. read more

Pretty much all Stop & Shop's are horrible but the one at the intersection of Broadway and Alewife Brook Pkwy in Somerville takes the prize for incompetence, poor customer service and inventory. The employees look completely demoralized and/or just don't care about their work. Listlessness and apathy are front and center. I could deal with these issues if the inventory and value are evident but neither are. The most recent incident was at the deli counter. There wasn't anyone there. Waited 5 min for someone to come out. Finally gave up. The only reason I go is because it's 100 yards from our home. I wish S&S would sell the store to Market Basket or Wegman's or Trader Joes. I have been going to this store since it opened 10 years ago, and I can say with confidence that this is one of the worst experiences I have had at this store. Sebastian at the deli was appallingly rude. He clearly had no idea what he was doing. He asked if I wanted the meat thicker, and responded sarcastically when I nicely asked to have it a little thicker. He also laughed at me when I told him what cheese I wanted. I usually shop at the nearby Stop & Shop on 905 Massachusetts Ave. I shopped here on 2023.07.18 at 2 pm, because the oven for the rotisserie chicken at the other Stop & Shop is broken. I had a frustrating experience. I had a shopping list of 10 items and had trouble locating two of the items (eggs and canned meant like canned chicken). I spoke to a woman who was working in the baked goods, a man who was working in canned foods, and a women who was working in the bread aisle. When I asked them about the canned meat, they said they didn't know where it was. When I asked them if there was someone else who would know, they said they didn't. When I asked them where the eggs were, they said the dairy department and pointed in a direction that wasn't close to the dairy department. Their tone was brusque; they didn't make eye contact; they seemed more interested in stocking shelves than helping me. While I understand everyone is super busy at a grocery store, I think they should have made more of an effort to help a customer locate some items. The two men working in the deli department were helpful. They answered a question I had about an ingredient in their chicken and helped me locate some either items. Overall, this store compares unfavorably to other Stop & Shops I've visited, and I buy things at Stop & Shops frequently. read more

Scheduled a pick up, no one showed up for 15-20 minutes, things that were showing "out of stock" while ordering showed up in my order automatically, things that were in my order were out of stock, but when i went in the store i could see them. Ridiculous. The person who got our stuff to our car literally threw things. After i reached home and unloaded, noticed a lot of things were bad quality and some were missing. Previous frequent Yelper here, although I don't use Yelp to write reviews anymore, I wanted to add my experience here since it was so extraordinarily unprofessional. When I was recently here, the cashier was texting on her cell phone at the register. When I walked over to get my items checked out, she looked up to look at me and then just walked away. She didn't say a word and left me standing at the register by myself! I eventually made my way to another register. This wasn't even the first rude cashier I've had to deal with here. In addition to the customer service, there is always some issue with self check out not working and various common items not being available. Even though I live down the street, I rarely shop here these days because this location is really that awful. On the rare occasions I do stop in here, I just get one or two things and try to leave as soon as possible. Be careful with this store - I have found them overcharging. I am a regular customer to this store. I normally do not check my receipt after checkout - but this time I did and found I was charged something I didn't have. Went back to the customer service, waited 25 minutes and the customer service rep didn't even apologized and as if I did something wrong and I had no right to go to ask them. She gave me the refund in cash (I paid by CC) but I didn't see positive attitude and no apology. Is that how this store trick regular customers like me? This might very well be a 1-star review if it wasn't so darn convenient to get to on my way home from work. I like broccoli but this week may be the first week I haven't been unimpressed with the broccoli I steamed. Many weeks, there isn't any broccoli left for me on the shelf, blotchy or otherwise. There is rarely asparagus, and it's usually impossible to find because they change where they put their items regularly. The meat is below average. Go to McKinnon's if you can. There isn't a wide selection of cereal. The fruit (apples and blueberries), are soooo hit-or-miss. Usually miss. The parking lot and entry and exit points make this place look like D-Day, you guys. I have almost gotten in a crash several times while trying to get in and out of the lot. Why 2 stars? At the intersection of 16 and Broadway, it's so easy to pass by. The Stop and Shop in Alewife, Somerville Ma has awful customer service. This was so even before COVID. They have no regards for people with disabilities. Store is also not very clean. Refrigerators are sort of dirty. Shop hear sometimes because I have no choice because of my condition. But not happy going there. Prices on some items are also not great. Took advantage of COVID to inflate prices. Also didn't want to give money back at this time on food items that were spoiled. Customers took the loss. Just moved to the neighborhood and went here for my first grocery shop this week ... my boyfriend picked up a Greek pasta salad (not expired per the date on the label) and immediately after eating some this afternoon (next day) became ill and was vomiting all day and night. Literally the rudest staff ever. Dude at the meat counter didn't want to help the poor guy before me who hardly spoke English. Basically sent him away without trying to understand him. Then answered my two questions without turning to face me or raising his voice so that I could actually hear him. Then sighed in exasperation at me. At the front of the store, while checking out, the manager repeatedly berated a staff member-- apparently unaware that it is she who looked terrible, not the employee. I say "repeatedly" because I returned to the store five minutes after leaving because I'd forgotten something. Having already been disgusted with her treatment of the employee, I watched her light into her again. Made me ill. Aaaaauuuuggh! This location fires up my inner Charlie Brown like you wouldn't believe. Why do I keep running up to the kick the ball, Stop & Lucy, when I know you're just going to pull that ish out from underfoot? Are you a Stop & Shop, or are you a Foodmaster with a new sign? Why is there zero consistency with inventory placement? Perhaps the infrastructure for the coolers was what led to the Foodmaster's demise because nothing is located where it feels like it belongs. Frozen goods along the back wall, dairy in the front left, with only produce in the front right feeling appropriate. There's a social science to grocery store layout that every big name in the business seems to utilize, and this ain't one of them. Fine, I found what I need. The least I can assume is that the stuff is safely nestled in a sealed package... oh wait, it's broken. The containers for multiple items from the dairy section were so haphazardly handled that the plastic spouts were cracked, and the inner product exposed. Accidents may happen, but when I've been, well, eating things from grocery stores for *mumble,mumble* years now, I've never seen three clear signs on mishandling stem from a single trip. Whatever, the cart's full, a premium is being paid for convenient location and now I just want to check out. Tell you what, Damien - how about we have three staffed registers open and one bagger during the evening rush. Because, y'know, self-checkout is always available. IS THIS A CVS? I'm not here for a Snickers and nail polish remover (catch my drag show Tuesdays and Thursdays), I'm supplying sustenance for my family for the week. This means bulk, and this means staffing a bagger at every lane during peak hours, especially when the cashier can't be bothered to stop that cilantro-ruining conveyor belt as your goods pile up at the end of the track. I absolutely despise this place. I would give it negative stars if I could. It's not even Stop and Shop stores in general - just this one in particular. When I first moved to Davis I had no idea what Market Basket was and thought I was doomed to shop at this hellhole forever. The produce is never fresh, and I've found mold on their fruit on multiple occasions. You can't depend on them to be consistent with their inventory - once in a blue moon they'll have the greek yogurt tub in the flavor I'm looking for. Want fresh produce and dependability without shopping at ridiculously priced stores (aka Whole Foods)? Well I have good news for you. MARKET BASKET!! This place is an absolute God-send and the complete polar opposite of this shithole. Everything at MB is fresh and CRAZY cheap. No joke, the same exact grocery list will cost you significantly less at MB than S&S, plus you get better quality. Can you ask for a better deal?? This is the most disgusting grocery store I've ever shopped at. The produce is consistently spoiled, while the meat department smells putrid. On my last visit, I witnessed an employee empty the outdoor trash and carry the leaking bags through the produce department and leave the wet mess without bothering to mop it up. This Stop and Shop has all your basics covered but it's smaller than most other S&S in the area and has somewhat of a limited selection. On a few occasions I've come here and gotten *almost* everything I need, then had to make an additional trip for one or two specialty items. Cart traffic can get backed up here with the smaller store design and the checkout aisles seem to take much longer than usual. Perfectly acceptable for a short grocery list but I wouldn't rely on it as one stop shopping or if you're looking for a wide variety. Better than a bodega, but not by much. read more

I miss Food Master. They had AMAZING prices, great staff and was always stocked with items I wantes. They closed down (sadly) and now we get stuck with an over priced and tiny Stop n Shop. Limited foods, a hand full of check out lines (with maybe 2 cashiers on if you're lucky, do yourself a favor and use self check out to avoid these lines) Limited stock on items, and staff that could care less if you're there or not. I was here one day (in line) and asked for a roll of quaters. I was told to go to customer service,so I wanted in another short line there. I was told they didn't have any rolls of quaters (really?) The only reason I go here is for quick items that I hope they have (ice cream, bread or flour) but that's about it. I still drive to Burlington to go to Market Basket to do my grocery shopping. I will NEVER shop at this location ever again or any location for that matter. During these times it's essential that we protect ourselves and those around us by wearing proper face covering per order of State and City of Somerville mandates. Appropriate face coverings must cover both the nose and mouth and be worn at all times in any public space. None of this was the case at this Stop & Shop. Every customer wore a mask but nearly half were wearing masks exposing their noses or just wearing them draped below their chins. What was even more startling was how many employees were wearing masks below their noses or not at all. While standing in line to check out I witnessed an employee with no mask drinking a beverage while checking out a customer (the customer was also wearing the mask just barely covering his mouth, his nose was fully exposed). The employee pulled down his mask talked to the customer and drank freely from his beverage while handling the customers purchases. I walked out of the store in shock and dismay not having purchased anything. Seriously? What's the point of even pretending to wear a mask if no one in your store does it correctly and is in no way enforced by staff or management for employees or customers? If the employees are not following strict guidelines enforced by the State and City while customers are in the building... then what happens behind the scenes? Are there safety protocols at this establishment? Are the employees safe? Are the customers safe? Is there a single member of the management team adhering to guidelines set by the State, City, or CDC.... I don't think so. Don't go here. Don't support an establishment that does not care about the safety of it's employees, it's customers, or its community. Somerville has over 80,000 people sharing the same 4 square miles and THIS STOP & SHOP IS PUTTING EVERYONE IN DANGER. This place has improved in some ways, but worsened in others. When I do have to go here, I try not to buy meat (that whole wall smells really weird), I check expiration dates obsessively, and I inspect/sniff produce a lot. I've had too many occasions of rotted garlic/onions. On a more positive note, the staff has improved - they know what they are doing now. They are also all very nice, and seem to like each other a lot. read more

I forgot an item I had purchased at the cashier and called and was told I could of course come reclaim it. I had already thrown out my receipt but they were more than happy to honor my original purchase. They had already re-shelved my item so someone helped me pull a new item. So grateful! read more

I really like this place as far as generic supermarkets go, although I have to say that it might be a case of familiarity breeding contentment. The layout makes some sense, there are small carts in accordance with the small aisles, the checkout people are generally efficient, and there's not a preponderance of senior citizens or people with tons of children that slow down the grocery-acquisition process. Having fresh fish is also fairly nice, though the deli/bakery stuff is not great. Two things to beware of, though: 1) The management lets the selection get drawn down before restocking shelves. At various times, I've had to miss out on granola bars, bread, vegetables (especially zucchini, squash, broccoli, asparagus, and sweet potatoes), and other stuff because I came at some strange time, like late on a Sunday. If I come during a more orthodox time, these issues don't arise. But it's worth noting. 2) Trying to do anything other than "go to the store to buy food" here is kind of a nightmare. Even a request as simple as stamps can lead to horrible delays in your experience as the cashiers try to figure out how to get stamps out of whatever they're using. Just don't do it. Way better than the abomination of a Stop and Shop in Arlington, though. read more

I don't know why people give so low rating. Maybe it used to be really bad? After shopping at Shaw's and Market Basket, I find this store satisfy my needs better. It is true that Market Basket offers a better price on many things, but the difference is only noticeable when you buy a car of stuffs. As a student who lives nearby, alone, I do not need to buy lots of stuffs at once. They offer pretty good deals on many things which are more than what I need. I love their seafood section the most, they're fresh and often have nice deals on lobster! My only complaint is that the staff working at the seafood section is often off the duty, so I have to wait for them to come. Other than that, I enjoy shopping here, as opposed to "fighting" with other customers for cart space at the Market Basket. read more

My wife agrees with the reviews that say this place is dirty and the staff poorly trained. However, I find it, like all Stop & Shop stores, to be a useful place for basics. The store brand items (everything from cranberry sauce to toilet paper) are good quality and good value. If the produce or meats do not look appealing. Whole Foods is not far. Because this is a small, urban store, selection is much more limited than the S&S I frequent on the Cape, but that actually adds some old fashioned charm. read more

Here's the thing. If you have money to shop at Whole Foods more than once every two months, you are probably not going to really appreciate this store. I appreciate this store. They have a massive clearance/last day/manager's special section, for starters. If you look at the fliers, which I do, you can save a lot of money. I often have to pick ONE store to go to based on fliers and it often comes down to here or Market Basket. The size of the clearance section plus the friendliness of the customer service staff and the decent to great interactions I have had with management pretty much always tips the scale for me. This Stop and Shop has produce that tends to be better than the produce in the Stop and Shop in Arlington Heights as well, by the way. The other one- the fruit is NEVER ripe and the cucumbers are always a freaking disaster. There are always baked goods and fresh cut produce on manager's special as well [which I rarely take advantage of, but I notice it is there]. If you use the stop and shop card, you can add up on savings. They have gotten better about the staffing at the registers- this is something I used to notice too and get PISSED about. It's still sometimes an issue, but not as frequently. There is often a cluster up at the front when it's busy but there is only so much to do about that, they can't do a lot with the layout. There are occasionally staff who kind of aren't doing anything. This happens EVERYWHERE at EVERY business and I really don't find this store to be stand out in this regard. But if you want to hate on some place, after that pretty much everything is going to piss you off. As I mentioned, there are a couple particularly nice people at customer service- just don't be jerks to them. Let me be the first to say that when I saw they were converting the Foodmaster at this location into a Stop & Shop I was beyond thrilled. I tried Foodmaster once years ago and never went back because it ticked all the boxes on my list of annoying grocery shopping experiences. Since I find most Shop & Shops orders of magnitude better than Foodmasters, I couldn't wait to try it out since I live in Teele Square and this would be the most convenient store to buy my groceries. I went this past Sunday, three days after the grand opening. It. Was. A. Disaster. It was so bad, that I was laughing most of the time because of how ridiculous it was, which actually somehow made it fun. Don't question my logic. Regardless, since it was opening weekend I know they have some kinks to work out and I'm sure they will settle into standard operating procedure soon. Still, I'm just detailing my experience, and I'm hoping the managers here can use some of my feedback to make improvements. Once I go a few more times I'll certainly update my review, which I'm sure will bump it up a few stars. I really want this store to do well and improve and I hope this review doesn't come across as too "complainy" but more as constructive criticism. Okay, fine. 85% constructive criticism, 15% complainy. Here are my grievances: (1) The front entrance and exit do not make sense. Literally everyone entering the store thought the exit was the entrance. Everyone. They even place a cart return there which looks like a cart pickup, making leaving the store a disaster. There was a guard stationed at that door telling people that the entrance was on the right side of the building, but still letting people in through the exit. (2) The aisles are insanely thin. I understand that the store is small and space is at a premium here, but talk about cart congestion. It made getting around impossible. Think Market Basket in Somerville by Union Square. (3) Piggybacking off the small aisles is the fact that they put displays physically in the aisles themselves, making the already thin aisles impassible. Seriously, you can just barely fit two cars side by side, but adding a standalone display in the aisle created TOTAL GRIDLOCK. Please please please get rid of those. (4) The produce stock as well as many popular items like bread were barren. It looked like the first big snowstorm of the year was looming over us and people went nuts stocking their pantries so they could ride it out. These weren't random unexpected items, so I think the store could have either planned better back-stock inventory or been more on top of restocking the shelves. (5) Ever see Wacky Deli episode of Rocko's Modern Life? That's what Stop & Shop's deli reminded me of. The staff were all really nice and accommodating while doing their best to keep up with the 12 people backlog waiting patiently to order, but as a customer, I just want to get in and get out. I opted for the deli kiosk, entered my order, and 10 minutes later my order was announced over the PA. When I got there a few minutes later, it was not there. I asked one of them about it and they said their printer was broken so they didn't know what my order was. Wouldn't they have a screen to display these orders? They did not mean their label printers for the prices and bar codes, since they were filling other walk up orders (after a long wait). I just told them my order and they filled it for me on the spot, but not after getting glares from people holding number tickets from the walk up area. Also I noticed over a dozen orphaned deli pickups from earlier in the day (I saw the time stamps on them when looking for mine initially) and they had been sitting there for hours. Why? It would have been so simple to get rid of that now room temperature deli meat. But, like I said, they were all working their butts off despite the chaos. (6) The prices were all over the map. Florida's Natural OJ for $1.99? Yes please. $6 loaf of bread that would be $3.50 everywhere else? No thanks. Here are the things I like: (1) Location is super convenient for me. (2) Every employee was super helpful and cheerful from the deli staff to the self checkout kiosk lady to the doorman. Like I said a few times already, this was opening weekend and these problems will hopefully go away once the store hits their stride. They have no clue how to properly bag groceries. They love to squish bananas and fruit. I rarely ever have a bagger and need to bag my own groceries, so then I can't watch the prices to make sure they ring up correctly. The aisles are small and the selection isn't great, but I don't usually have problems with food quality. Their meat and fish selection is a little sparse, but they don't have a whole lot of space. I can overlook the lack of selection for the convenient location, but for the love of Pete please don't squish my fruit!! read more

After coming here numerous times, I've decided to use it as my backup store for when I want to make a quick run, as opposed to my regular grocery-shopping store. They do have some good deals when things are on sale, and the shop and stop brands of food are less expensive which is helpful. There are more cons though: 1. Their aisles are cramped and narrow, like the previous review said. I kept bumping into people, can't move down the aisle when there's another cart on the side, etc. 2. Their selection of organic food is quit pricey--Whole Foods sells some organic food cheaper! 3. They have limited frozen food options--only 1 aisle, and no Amy's brand or other organic/healthier brands of frozen food. Their selection of imitation meat is so limited, it's depressing. 5. Their bakery section also limited- few varieties of cookies and no brownies! 6. The cashiers are all teens and while they are nice, but they are usually so busy talking across the cash registers to each other, that they barely pay attention to you. Not very pleasant. 7. They have about a million bags of onion bagels and plain bagels in stock, and no others--once again, limited options. Again, I won't be a regular customer after numerous disappointing experiences. The whole foods around the corner has a better selection and in some cases, lower prices. The Shaw's at porter square also has a much better, wider selection and wider aisles. read more

i get the complaints about produce not being stocked, or the inconvenience of layout, but really? you're going to complain about them not having a certain kind of pasta you like? okay, sorry. sometimes yelp is too much to handle. BUT. this stop and shop gets the job done. it's on my way home, and i guess i generally go to the one on magrath highway if i need to do heavy shopping. but in the times when i've needed 15 bins of cookies for a work event, or a bunch of fruit to bring to my desk for the week, they provide. the produce is WAY better than trader joes, where i do most of my shopping, but i guess TJs sets a pretty low bar (love you TJs, but what's with your plastic wrapped broccoli that's at least two days past its prime?). i called in for customer service today, and the manager was really helpful. like, tried to find an old receipt that i lost, helpful. thanks manager! big ups to you. if you want fancy, go to whole foods or something. this store is pretty decent for a stop and shop. read more
