In fact this does seem to be the new way of doing things by the council - let's build things on brown field sites and aim to create a new urban hub around it. With very little passing traffic, it's going to take a while to really become a mainstream destination but it is very easily reached with Deansgate and Oxford Road stations around 5 mins walk. On this occasion I was looking for somewhere to work for a few hours and sat upstairs in their cafe bar grabbing a couple of flat whites and a bacon bap . Not bad all round and pretty quiet on a Monday morning. It did get much busier at lunch time so it's good to see peeps really enjoying this offering! You can sit outside on deck chairs and tables and there's a cafe downstairs just selling drinks and cake.

Instead, it has enough cool places to keep you occupied for years but at the same time mean you can become a regular places with fomo. Plus, it still keeps surprising you. Manchester has some of the coolest event venues I've ever been to, such as Victoria Warehouse and the gorgeous Albert Hall. The Victorian Gothic Monastery perhaps out impresses even those venues. A Franciscan church and friary from the 1860s, it was formerly on the top 100 most endangered monuments in the world. Now beautifully restored, I entered through the lovely cloisters and was stunned entering the soaring nave, made even more striking with coloured lighting plus an aerialist display! I attended for a large work party of about 250 people. It's a really huge space so any less than this and it might feel a bit empty - imagine how big the weddings here are! We really enjoyed our salmon starter, which had a well-balanced lemon and caper dressing. The chicken supreme was standard but not dry at all and I thought good for a catered meal. It also consistently schedules a fantastic range of live music, from Irish folk bands, to more modern Indie style groups who perform a range of covers. I once ended up joining a group of drunken Irish - such memories. Definitely have a look in though - you never know what will happen.

In fact a guy just walked around with a big barrel of tasty looking biscuits offering everyone some - is this utopia!?! The place is huge and had so much room to sit, move and just be lived in - the people it attracts all look to be in the same boat with their macbooks/creative mindset and within 5 mins I've got chatting to my neighbour in our plush leather chairs about how great it is that you don't feel under pressure to drink up and go like a standard coffee shop! Well the other day I changed that, and I have to say I was dead impressed with this place! The concept is fantastic, you pay for the time you spend there and in that time can eat and drink as much coffee and cake as you like. Some people think the concept is odd, and I can appreciate it's a little different, but look at it economically and you're practically stealing from them! I genuinely felt guilty when I paid about £2.80 for 45 minutes of time, in which I'd consumed 3 slices of cake and 2 coffees. Thats the norm for me though, not that I'm a greedy pig, just that if I'm sat working for an hour (anywhere) I'll need a couple of coffees and something to nibble on. And let me tell you this for free, it costs a damn sight more than £2.80 even if I'd make the cake myself at home! I do wonder how they cover expenses however I believe a lot of volunteer work is involved and if you do volunteer, you get free time in the place - wins all round!

(I need to go to El Gato Negro again - only been the once but it was great. And its won awards including the Michelin Guide UK Bib Gourmand. Canto is a Mediterranean tapas in Ancoats area of Manchester. Its a more casual restaurant than El Gato Negro. When we arrived it was quiet with just about a couple other tables occupied. It was early to be fair - 630pm on a Thursday. But when we left about 815pm it was busy - always good to see a restaurant busy - better atmosphere and of course means they are doing well. I had looked at the menu before visiting - of course - and had in mind what I wanted already. But the specials potentially could have changed things - but didn't. Canto have a 3 dishes for £15 deal which is for most of the things on the menu. The only things not really in the deal is the seafood dishes - although king prawns are. I went for the king prawns (with garlic and chilli) - delicious. Had lots of garlic, not too much chilli. (Having king prawns when I was in Vietnam has sort of ruined king prawns because they will never be as good as what I had in Vietnam!). They were will very good though. I also had the pork skewers which were OK and shared the Jamon croquettes and Catalan bread with someone. So had 2 x croquettes and couple pieces of the bread. Catalan bread was really good.

The organisation, by Manchester CAMRA branch, is superb. This year, for the first time, we went on Friday night - the busiest slot. When we arrived, just after 7pm, the queue was along two sides of the building, about 300m. We actually got into the foyer inside 35 minutes, which I thought was quite something! Once inside, there are plenty of signs and directions, the toilets are reasonable, considering the numbers using them and the stewards all work very well. The beers are really something - no-one could want a greater choice! The loss of a point isn't really down to the Building or the organisers, but merely the access. We left at 9.30pm in order to get back to Warrington (normally a 45 minute journey) in time to help close up our pub. The metrolonk was excellent but, on arriving at Picadilly, we found that there are no trains to Liverpool after 10 at night! Not a good way to encourage visitors. We won't be going for any nights out in Manchester in future, no matter who is on at the venues, as it can cost around £65 to get home by taxi!

My suggestion was actually a hit. I did my indecisive alterego very proud. There are many quality club nights organised by the Lost and Found name and this was no exception. Dance off, being £1 entry, sold it for me. Doubles for £3, a range of sambucas £1.50? Messy. Dance off saw a battle between three major DJs, strangerways, good vibrations and juicy DJs playing a mix of Joy Division, The Temptations and Dr Dre. Amazing combination. Ruby Lounge is renown for it's quality club nights and live music. The venue is perfect, with an adequate dance floor, a stage to match and plenty of seating on a slightly raised level for a chill out. Another great Northern Quarter location that needs to become a regular thing for me.

The gig was billed as The Cribs Aftershow but it was basically just a gig- most of the spectators were either in one of the four bands, looked like they should be or were girl groupies who were way too impressed with themselves that they were getting backstage. The sofas and high backed armchairs in the main bar area were nice touches, there were a few mirror balls around too. Plus velvet curtains - hello, strip club? Then you turn to the grimy stage area with the big grill up between the bands and the crowd. That said, no one went past the pillar anyway. Too cool to stand right at the front. Alright drinks prices - get some of their cheap vodka mixers or flavoured sambucas otherwise you'll run out of money quickly. After the bands they had Gareth Brooks from Xfm DJIng but we didn't end up staying.

A real architectural gem, this Grade II* listed Edwardian swimming pool and Turkish Baths has…read moreserious kerb appeal, though to be honest it's not in the greatest of surroundings - demolition and urbanisation over the years has seen to that. The repair and restoration of the building, inside and out, is still a work in progress but there are lots of stunning original features throughout, not to mention its layout of corridors and random doorways means you uncover its character bit-by-bit. To aid the on-going fund raising, the Baths have regular events held within the walls - one of the biggest in recent years is Indy Man Beer Con (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/indy-man-beer-con-manchester) which utilises much of the space brilliantly (where else can you sup a large range of beers whilst sat in large, empty swimming pools?). For the first time this year I also went to The Vintage Home Show which saw the building crammed full of retro furniture, home ware and clothing. They regularly hold 'Getting to Know VB' tours and participate in heritage open days, so check out their website for upcoming events, it's a beautiful place and needs every penny to bring it back to its full splendour.
